PS Vita hardware sales drop below 20K units after five weeks

January 19th, 2012

While the PS Vita enjoyed launch week hardware sales which Sony Computer Entertainment deemed were “in accordance with expectations”, sales for the new handheld have since decreased after one month on the Japanese market. According to Media-Create, Vita sales for the week ending January 15th hit 18,361 units, down from the 42,915 units sold just the week before.

Outside of a slight sales boost during its fourth week, the Vita’s sales have been trending downward since the handheld first launched back on December 17th. In fact, Sony’s PSP has been outselling the Vita since the second week, and we haven’t even thrown in Nintendo’s 3DS yet.

Vita software have also failed garner signifigant sales compared to PSP titles, by Media-Create’s reckoning. Indeed, Vita titles have not managed to break into Media-Create’s weekly software top ten chart at any point since the handheld’s launch, though it’s well worth noting that Media-Create doesn’t track digital download sales for any current platform.

Sony launches PlayStation Vita in Japan

December 19th, 2011

Sony’s long-awaited PlayStation Vita portable game machine has hit stores in Japan as thousands of game enthusiasts lined up at stores from early in the morning.

Sony is predicting brisk sales, even though Saturday’s launch may have missed some holiday shoppers. A successful debut would help the company offset the rest of its struggling business.

The device is a touch-interface and motion-sensitive handheld seen as a successor to the PlayStation Portable. Vita’s launch would heat up competition with rival Nintendo Co’s 3DS.

Many of the purchasers Saturday had made advance orders on the internet so they can start playing immediately.

The PS Vita goes on sale in North America and Europe on February 22. Sony’s long-awaited PlayStation Vita portable game machine hit stores in Japan on Saturday as thousands of game enthusiasts lined up early in the morning to be among the first to buy it.

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. is predicting brisk sales, even though the launch may have missed some holiday shoppers. A successful debut would help the company offset the rest of its struggling business. Sony projects a loss of more than $1 billion for the fiscal year through March 2012, which would be its fourth straight annual loss.

In Tokyo’s Ikebukuro shopping district, some 300 game enthusiasts lined up outside a major electronics chain that opened a few hours earlier than usual for the event. Many of the purchasers had made advance orders on the Internet so they could start playing immediately.

The device is a touch-interface and motion-sensitive handheld seen as a successor to the PlayStation Portable. Gamers can connect over cellphone networks and Wi-Fi hotspots, and use GPS location-tracking technology.

Television footage showed some shoppers unwrapping their new purchases and starting to try them out at the store.

“I’m so happy to see so many people lining up for PS Vita so early in the morning,” Sony Computer Entertainment Japan President Hiroshi Kono wrote in his official blog after touring several Tokyo stores. “I can tell they had anxiously waited for today’s launch.”

For the Tokyo-based electronics and entertainment giant, the Vita is the biggest product launch since the PlayStation 3 console five years ago. It’s also accompanied by two dozen software products-the largest number of launch titles in PlayStation history.

The Vita has front and back cameras, a touchscreen in front, a touch pad on the back and two knob-like joysticks. It will enable gamers to play against each other using PlayStation 3 consoles over the Internet-based PlayStation Network, a system that was hit with a massive hacking attack earlier this year.

Vita’s launch will heat up competition with rival Nintendo Co.’s 3DS. Nintendo Co’s 3DS had a disappointing start despite the company’s efforts to market its 3D technology, with critics complaining about a lack of interesting games. Nintendo ended up slashing prices on the 3DS within six months.

The companies are challenged by the rise of smartphones and tablets, through which casual gamers play inexpensive and simple games like the mega-hit “Angry Birds.”

VA Gov. McDonnell Announces Strong Response to Recent Failures in State Computer Systems

September 30th, 2010

Governor Bob McDonnell announced that there will be an independent review of the unprecedented hardware failure and contingent data corruption that occurred on August 25, affecting thirteen percent of the Commonwealth’s executive branch file servers and 26 out of the 89 executive branch agencies. The review will be conducted by an outside vendor selected by the Governor, Virginia Information Technologies Association (VITA) and the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Committee (JLARC). At the time of his announcement, the Governor indicated that all of the state agencies affected by the event have had their services restored. According to a timeline on the VITA website, the outage impacted services for some agencies over approximately a week.

Governor McDonnell remarked “This recent computer failure is unacceptable. I look forward to learning exactly how this occurred, how we can prevent such a disruption in the future, and how we can improve responsiveness and data reclamation if future interruptions occur.” Upon learning that the outage was being attributed to the failure of an EMC Storage Area Network (SAN) device, Cetrom Information Technology, Inc, President and CEO Christopher Stark replied “I was very surprised to hear about the hardware failure because EMC manufactures superior equipment, but these failures can happen. However, I find it almost shocking that their data redundancy solution also met with failure as well, in consideration of the absolute requirement for the perpetual performance of their network.” Stark concluded “I believe that the Governor’s decision to have an independent audit is the sound approach in receiving an unbiased analysis of the outage event as well as the logical design of their current network infrastructure.”

Cetrom Information Technology, Inc. is an industry leading Application Services Provider (ASP), delivering a full spectrum of “Cloud Computing” solutions with their hosted technology services platform for small and medium businesses. State Holds Hearing On Computer Crash

September 26th, 2010

After a monster computer glitch tangled up state computers last month, lawmakers take steps toward protecting taxpayers. Virginia legislators spent Monday searching for answers and apologies for that massive computer meltdown that paralyzed state agencies. They also wanted promises that something like this will not happen again.

Nearly three weeks after the outage started, lawmakers were more frustrated than fiery; there is a long list of questions that are unanswered. At the top of the list for the General Assembly: making sure taxpayers do not get stuck with the bill.

The head of Virginia’s troubled Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA), Sam Nixon, says he plans to get to the bottom of last month’s massive state computer crash.

“The overall outage, the hardware failure itself, was unacceptable,” stated Nixon. “The amount of time it took to restore agencies to an operational standpoint was unacceptable.”

On August 25, systems operated by VITA and subcontractor Northrop Grumman failed. The company has agreed to pay up to a $250,000 for an independent review of the meltdown.

“We will listen, we will learn, we will do better,” said Northrop Grumman’s Sam Abbate.

But Monday, members of the legislature’s investigative panel wanted to make sure the state does not get stuck with a bill.

“I would hope that Northrop Grumman would cover those costs and not put it back on the taxpayers or even on the agencies that have been affected,” said 17th District State Senator Edd Houck (D).

The review will take several more months, but VITA plans to make policy changes immediately.

“We are not going to wait,” said Nixon. “We’re not going to wait to make any changes that are necessary.”

Legislators say they want to know why some data, including thousands of drivers license photos, were lost, when the state is paying to back-up government files.

“We were promised redundancies and we clearly didn’t have adequate redundancies because we had a cataclysmic failure,” said 32nd District State Senator Janet Howell (D).

In addition to the cost of the study, Northrop Grumman will get hit with a six-figure penalty. Legislators would like to see the company pay for all costs associated with the computer crash, but it is unclear if the state’s technology contract with Northrop Grumman would allow that.
