Best speakers for your pc

October 1st, 2010

Ever wondered if there could be better speakers for your PC than the common $5-$10 ones most of us have? Well, I know I did.

It’s been for years that I used the cheapest of the cheapest and the worse of the worse speakers available simply because, I didn’t thought it would make a big difference.

Now this will be a small review of the best speakers I ever had: the Logitech G51 Speaker.

Long story short, after years of using crappy speakers and allowing my ears to get used to their horrible sound i, decided that for a gamer like myself it would be a nice upgrade, I mean, I had the money and, my computer hardware is at its best so, I thought: ‘ahh what the hell… I’ll buy the darn thing” even thought, I never considered the speakers as a major part of my personal gaming experience.

After examining some other speakers, reading review online and of course, consulting with my fellow gamer friends, I decided to go for the Logitech G51 Speaker and, this is because of it’s relatively comfortable price and the fact that about 80% of my friends recommended me to buy them.

Now, I personally didn’t knew what to expect after I easily assembled them to my computer and launched Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and, this probably the best way to describe what went through my mind when the game finally loaded: “I hope it was a good investment… I mean they are only speakers what possib….. OH MY DEAR GOD!!! did a grenade just blew up in my bedroom?! Is there a sniper in my room?! what is going on?!” I’ll tell you what what going on. the Logitech G51 Speaker.

Let’s put the incredibly outstanding sound quality aside for a second and focus on the amazing realistic sound that was blasting out of my brand new speakers! The bullets sounded like bullets, the boot steps of my fellow commandos made me feel like they are with me in my room, preparing their assault on the kitchen and, the explosions made me feel like I’m fighting the Nazis in the first 10 minutes of “Saving Private Ryan”. I honestly never thought that the Logitech G51 speaker will be able to increase the experience and the fun of gaming by like 10 times!

Bottom line is, get these speakers and get them now. I don’t care if you get them from a friend or from a discount on amazon or whatever… trust me, you will thank me later!

I’m adding a link here to a page on Hubpages which describes the Logitech G51 Speaker in a little more detail, providing test videos and other cool info. Before you press on the link I give you, put a smile on your face and excuse me for being a little crazy with my review, I know I tend to get very excited when I’m satisfied!

Teufel Concept B 200: Hands-on review with USB speakers

September 25th, 2010

Recently we were sent Teufel’s new Concept B 200 Active 2.0 multimedia speaker system, these speakers come with an amplifier which has an integrated sound card and also acts as a 3 port USB hub.

For the last few years I have been using a pretty impressive Creative 2.1 speaker system, therefore I was keen to see how Teufel’s 2.0 system compared, also I was interested to see if Teufel’s integrated sound card made much of a difference to sound fidelity.

Upon unpacking the speakers the first thing I noticed was the build quality and professional-look of the hardware, I was slightly disappointed that there was no USB A to B cable or 3.5mm plug to jack plug cable, however being the computer geek that I am I had these at hand.

The package contents included an amplifier unit, two speakers, a mains power cable (I had to use my own kettle lead as I live in the UK), two speaker cables and some paperwork, all of the speaker sets I have used previously use 3.5mm cables, however these use 6.3mm plugs which apparently help prevent pole reversal.

The speakers and amplifier are both pretty heavy, which in my opinion make them both very professional, also all of the ports, buttons and controls feel rugged and shouldn’t be too easy to accidently damage.

There are plenty of different ports on the rear of the amplifier, these allow up to three audio sources to be plugged in at once, there is a standard 3.5mm jack port, a USB port to connect it to your computer and connectivity for RCA input. There is also a port for your power cable, two USB ports to connect additional devices and two 6.3mm connections for your speakers. On the front on the amp there is one USB port, a 3.5mm microphone port and a 3.5mm port for headphones.

The speakers have a very strong and sturdy feel and stand 30cm tall and output at 30 WATTS (RMS), in my opinion they look great either side of your monitor, I temporarily sat the monitor on top of the amplifier, however Teufel advise against this in the user manual.

As the amplifier features an internal USB sound card I half expected there to be a CD for installing software on your computer, however there wasn’t so I just plugged in the USB cable into my Windows 7 laptop to see what would happen. The laptop detected a new device and installed it within a minute, I wasn’t sure whether installation had been successful, so I tried to play an MP3 file, sure enough the USB sound card was working fine.

I also tested the speakers on my Windows XP desktop PC and a MacBook running Snow Leopard, both installations were automatic and took less than a minute, on the MacBook I had to go into sound properties to set the USB sound card as the output.
On the front of the amp there is a power button and a button to select your audio source, I plugged in my BlackBerry via the 3.5mm port, my Xbox 360 via the RCA ports and my laptop via the USB port, all of which played back perfectly even if I quickly switched between sources.

It is always hard to describe sound quality with words, however I will do my best. When playing back audio via the speakers there was great depth in the sound, the bass and treble controls really allow you to hear the music just how you want to, even if you play audio at full volume the sound does not distort.

The bass in my opinion is very impressive considering there is no subwoofer, don’t get me wrong these speakers won’t shake the walls like a subwoofer would but provide enough bass to make the neighbours complain.

I tried a range of different audio sources to see if I could get the speakers to sound poor, however I failed miserably, which is obviously a good thing.

The USB sound card is great in my opinion, I do not have a trained ear, however I felt I could tell a difference when inputting via USB rather than a standard 3.5mm input from a portable media player.

I briefly tested the USB hub functionality with a USB keyboard, mouse and a flash drive, all worked fine without issues.

As mentioned previously I am not a huge enthusiast in terms of sound clarity etc, however I was very impressed with the clarity of amplification and the overall professional look and feel of this product. If your an enthusiast looking for a set of 2.0 speakers I think you will have a hard task finding a better speaker system than the Teufel Concept B 200.

If you would like view the full specs and perhaps buy the Teufel Concept B 200 speaker system check out this link, they are currently retailing for £199.99.

Logitech rocks the house with new THX certified speakers

September 13th, 2010

Logitech might not be a brand that people typically think of when they think speaker systems. But their latest system might change that. The Z623 is a 2.1 system that is affordably priced ($149.99), offers 200W output and is THX certified. It has volume controls that are integrated into the speaker itself for convenient adjustability. They are compabitble with computers, PlayStation2, PLAYSTATION3, Xbox 360, Wii, music players, TVs, DVD players and other audio sources with 3.5 mm or RCA audio out. I could really use a set like this for my iMac, which is currently acting as my only TV while my basement is being remodeled. Sometimes Hulu’s shows have very low volume, making it tough to understand dialog. Full press release after the jump.

Acer az5700-u2112 all-in-one computer review

August 10th, 2010

Specifications

The Acer AZ5700-U2112 has a 23-inch screen and uses an Intel Core i5-650 CPU.

The machine has 4GB of DDR3 RAM, an 8x DVD burner, Intel HD graphics, 802.11n WiFi, and a 1TB SATA HDD.

The machine isn’t on the Acer website at the time of writing, but you can pick it up at Newegg for $1009.

Benchmarks

To test out the Acer AZ5700-U2112 I will use my iTunes encoding test and my movie encoding test. The first test up is the iTunes encoding test.

The Acer AZ5700-U2112 took 1:11 to encode my Stone Temple Pilots Core test album from AAC to MP3 format. This is hands down the best performance ever from an AIO in this benchmark. The movie encoding test was equally impressive with the Acer AZ5700-U2112.

For this test, I take the Magic of flight video and encode it from WMV 1080p to XviD 1080p format. The machine took only 175 seconds to encode the video, absolutely demolishing the other AIOs I have tested.

In Use

After the Acer AZ5700-U2112 destroyed the other AIOs I have played with in benchmarks, I started to use the machine for normal computer work and media duties.

This AIO is as at home playing video and doing computer work as it is breaking benchmark records. I worried that the Intel integrated graphics might hold the machine back for watching streaming video.

I worried for nothing, the Acer AZ5700-U2112 has excellent media streaming capabilities.

I was able to stream the highest resolution Hulu offers in windowed and full screen mode without a hint of stuttering or playback issues. The machine also plays DVDs with ease as well.

Acer ships the Acer AZ5700-U2112 with a wireless mouse and keyboard. The mouse has about 800 dpi, which is plenty of sensitivity for the 23-inch screen of the AIO.

The keyboard has decent typing feel and a full assortment of media control keys to keep the movies and video under control.

The big screen is glossy, which means lots of glare. That glossy screen is very well suited to playing video content though. It offers crisp , bright colors and good black levels.

All that means that the video and movies you watch here look fantastic.

One of the more interesting features of the Acer AZ5700-U2112 that you don’t find on some of the other AIOs on the maker it’s the touchscreen.

Touchscreens on an AIO aren’t that uncommon, but what is uncommon is a touchscreen that is very accurate.

You can touch options on a small drop down list with accuracy, which is something many AIOs can’t do.

If the links and onscreen controls are large enough for you to touch the screen is accurate enough that you won’t be hitting the link below or beside what you really wanted.

The Acer AZ5700-U2112 also ships with a wireless remote for controlling the content from across the room.

That remote comes in handy if you use the integrated antenna connection on the AIO to hook up an antenna for local OTA TV channels.

The onboard sound system is also better than your average computer.

The speakers have enough volume to be heard across the room even if the room isn’t that quiet.

The only irksome thing on the Acer AZ5700-U2112 is that the wireless mouse and keyboard have to use an adapter that takes up one of the available USB ports.
