Dell Rolls Out Cloud Software, Hardware, Services

March 25th, 2010

Dell has rolled out a line of servers, software and services aimed at capturing a share of the burgeoning market for enterprises that are transitioning to a cloud computing environment.

The initiative, which was launched at an event in San Francisco on March 24, is designed to help organizations who looking to migrate to the cloud.

The offerings include a line of new Dell PowerEdge C-servers with a “hyperscale” design, which will support high-density data center environments; a Dell Cloud Services consulting unit, offering deployment and management services for cloud computing models; and a Dell Cloud Partner Program, where Dell will partner with independent software vendors to offer cloud applications and services.

“By listening to our customers in the hyperscale segment, we have learned what matters most to them in operating businesses at the extreme edge of efficiency,” Dell data center solutions general manager Roy Guillen said in a statement. “They need offerings that are designed with power efficiency and density at their core. They also demand fast and easy-to-deploy infrastructure solutions that speed up time to revenue and dramatically reduce TCO [total cost of ownership].”

Dell said the new offerings are based on work the company’s data center solutions (DCS) group has performed over the last three years. It noted its DCS group has worked with early leaders in cloud computing, such as assisting Microsoft with its Windows Azure cloud platform. Dell says it continues to work with Microsoft on the Azure platform, with Dell and Microsoft offering services, and Microsoft using Dell hardware for the infrastructure.

Dell plans to make a turn-key cloud offering for Web applications available first. The Web cloud is designed to deal with issues linked to Web environments, including unpredictable traffic, the fear of under-provisioning, and the migration from development to production.

The offering will combine Dell servers and services, with integrated Web application cloud software from Joyent.
