Sony to launch four console games by May

November 13th, 2010

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, responsible for distribution, marketing and sales of PlayStation2, PlayStation3 and PSP (PlayStation Portable) software and hardware, is planning to launch four console games in India by May next year.

“There is a game being developed with characters of Amar Chitra Katha by Gameshastra. Then, you will see two games coming out of Immersive Technologies on Chandragupta Maurya in his early days, called Battle Royal. Another is to figure who can do a better strategy, Porus or the Rani of Jhansi. Besides, there will be a newer version of Street Cricket,” Atrindriya Bose, country manager (PlayStation), Sony Computer Entertainment India, told mediapersons here today.

Sony Computer currently has four partners in India – Hyderabad-based Gameshastra and Immersive, Bangalore-headquartered Candella and Mumbai’s Trine Games. They have so far developed six games, including Hanuman, Desi Adda, World Quiz and Street Cricket in 12 formats for the domestic market.

“India is adept in telling stories which are more contemporary,” Bose said, adding the typical investment in its soon-to-be-launched games would be $2 million (Rs 9 crore) each.

Saying the installed base of consoles in India, together with its competitors like Microsoft’s Xbox and Nitendo, was pegged at a million units, he said the company was expecting sales of 350,000 units of its PS2, PS3 and PSP consoles in the country by the end of this financial year, a 45 per cent jump over last year.

Sony today launched a game titled Street Cricket Champions for PSP and PSP2. Developed by Trine Games, it is priced at Rs 499 for PS2 and Rs 699 for the PSP.

Sony PlayStation Or PSP Phone May Be In The Works Along With A Tablet PC

October 31st, 2010

During a recent results call, Sony tipped it’s hand a bit by giving strong hints towards the development of a possible PlayStation phone or PSP phone (PlayStation Portable phone). Although not confirming nor denying this possible direction in product development, enough was said to allow those listening in to draw some pretty strong conclusions.

Sony did confirm they are working on a new hardware device that would be delivered by the Network Services group. This is the same group that is responsible for both the PlayStation brand as well as Sony branded computers.

The company also mentioned a plan to “better incorporate” the Sony Computer Entertainment division by bringing them onto the main Sony City campus. This would allow the division to be involved at a more intimate level with planning teams for what appears to be a mystery product.

The Ericsson side of Sony Ericsson was mentioned as well in connection to both smartphone and game devices. They appear to be helping out with the development process.

On the call, Sony mentioned wanting to add cellular capability to the device line established by the PSP. This is a critical step for the electronics giant in competing with the Apple iPhone. Rumors of an Android based slide phone with PSP Go controls have started to surface lately.

Another important product that was alluded to was a tablet PC. It’s unclear at the moment if that would be released as a Sony Ericsson device or one geared toward the VAIO line. Regardless, it appears the tablet PC category Sony has been cautious about up until the release of the Apple iPad is now becoming a focus.

Japanese DS Sales Decline, PSP Overtakes DSi

October 8th, 2010

Nintendo DS sales saw a decline this week, allowing the PSP to overtake the DSi as this week’s top selling platform on the Japanese hardware sales charts, reports tracking firm Media Create.

For the week ended October 3, the DSi sold 24,937 units, a roughly 50 percent decline from last week, and sales of other versions of the Nintendo DS declined as well.

PSP sales remained consistent from last week, leaving the platform on top of the charts as DS sales decrease.

The slowing Nintendo DS sales correlate with the steady decline in Pokemon Black/White sales. While the game still tops the software sales charts, it has sold less and less since its successful launch.

Sales of other platforms remained constant, leaving the overall hardware sales rankings largely unchanged.

Below are the full sales rankings from Media Create for the week ended October 3, 2010. (The second chart lumps together sales of all models in a given line of hardware.)

Sony had its latest lineup of PlayStation 3 and PSP hardware on

September 16th, 2010

PlayStation 3 will be getting a new rev Classic White variation on October 21. The new rev checks in at 320 gigabytes and is priced at ¥34,980. Classic White was previously only available in 160G form.

PSP-3000 will be getting Black/Red and White/Blue limited edition colors. These are priced at ¥17,800 and will be released on November 18. A previous limited color, Blossom PInk, will get a general release, also on November 18, priced at ¥16,800.

Sony isn’t quite ready for a pink PS3 unit, but the system will get a “Candy Pink” Dual Shock 3 controller on November 18. This carries the standard DS3 price of ¥5,500.

The final piece of hardware took up a good chunk of time at Sony’s press briefing today. Sony and Capcom are teaming up for the Monster Hunter Portable 3rd Hunters Model PSP system. This version of the PSP has been changed a bit to match Monster Hunter. Superficially, the system’s speaker holes have been made to look like Felyne footprints, and there are illustrations all around the unit. More substantially, the analogue thumb pad has been given a bit of indentation, and the system includes an expanded battery pack as standard.

Psp puts japan hardware sales back in black

September 8th, 2010

The PlayStation Portable absolutely killed it in Japan last week, sales-wise, gobbling up a huge portion of the hardware sales market and giving Sony the dominant portion of the pie. Who’s responsible?

The one-two punch of MonHun Nikki: Poka Poka Ailu Mura and Ace Combat: Joint Assault helped propel the PSP to sweet sales last week, according to sales tracker Media Create. Neither did much for the PSP’s UMD-less sibling, which still languishes in last place.

For the bestselling hardware in Japan for the week of August 23 to 29, look at this bullet-pointed list.

Sony PSP bundle strategy continues with madden NFL 11

August 3rd, 2010

Sony on Monday announced a new Madden NFL PSP hardware and software pack in the U.S., as the company continues its strategy to move more hardware units of the aging portable through value-added offerings.

Sony Computer Entertainment America director of hardware marketing John Koller said on the official U.S. PlayStation blog that the bundle, which includes the PSP-3000, would launch on August 10, and will come with a UMD of EA Sports’ Madden NFL 11 for $169.99.

The PSP has sold 17 million units in North America since its launch in 2005 in the region. Total global hardware sales for the handheld are over 60 million units.

Sony makes it a practice to bundle popular games with PSP hardware to help stimulate sales. In June, the company released a PSP bundle that included Metal Gear Solid: Piece Walker, a 2GB memory stick and “Spirited Green” hardware for $199.99.

Sony has stuck with a value-added pricing strategy for PSP in lieu of annual price drops. The last time that Sony cut the price of the handheld in U.S. was March 2007, when the company dropped the price from $199.99 to its current $169.99 tag for the PSP-3000. The UMD-less PSP, introduced last year, sells for $249.99.
