Update your pc drivers

September 2nd, 2010

There are lots of devices that make up the computer and these devices usually interact with one another through various small software programs called drivers.

The devices such as scanners, printers, keyboards, mouse, USB drives, and cameras e.t.c. can all function properly if the drivers that are programmed for them are in top shape.

This fact may be blunt but it is an eternal truth: your computer would amount to nothing and wouldn’t function well if the correct drivers aren’t installed.

Note that a device driver may be correct today but won’t be the next day because it may have been outdated.

This is because many manufacturers update their drivers monthly and the PC users and required to update their too to be able to keep getting the latest performance from the devices being driven.

Nobody will dispute the fact that drivers are very essential for the optimal performance of any computer.

You will be forgiven if you really don’t know what these device drivers are but I believe that having read this to this extent, you will beginning to realize that your computer device drivers are the software that makes it possible for you to be able to use most of the programs, devices or features of your PC.

What usually happens is that some of these device drivers get corrupt or outdated and requires immediate attention if they must resume their optimal job.

You have to make it a point of duty to trying to find and install only the best and most compatibly drivers.

Disregard anyone who will give a contrary advice and don’t align with any website that will ask you to download and install some old or outdate drivers.

You have better options and it is to get the updated drivers that will help your computer to keep performing optimally.

Before, it used to be nightmare for PC users to research and download needed device drivers because it isn’t just because one would need to go online to search for the drivers but the need to get the right drivers is quite tasking.

These has all changed in recent time because it is now possible to make use of certain computer program to track, scan, repair, replace and update all the driver needs of any computer on autopilot.

Using this automatic program will help to keep your computer up-to-date at any time.

It takes just few minutes to fix these programs initially but it keeps working in the computer even after the initial use.

Fixing and updating devices such as printers, motherboard, keyboards, display drivers, scanners, USB drivers, audio driver and so on are just like taking a cup of coffee these days if one makes use of this awesome driver updater.

Don’t forget that without the appropriate and updated driver, your hardware won’t work properly or won’t even perform at all in some situations.

You also have the option of searching the device drivers’ manufacturers’ websites but this has lots of rigors because you will need to know the exact names of the drivers you need, and the details of such driver and also pray that the website have good search platform.

This is quite some process! Wouldn’t it be nice and easy if one settles for a reliable website that will provide all the driver needs and details in one simple portal?

Operating system, a brief discussion

August 31st, 2010

All the computer users are very much familiar with the word Operating System, but what exactly an operating system is.

This is the software of a computer system that manages diverse array of computer operations and manages computer resources.

It also hosts computer applications and handles the operations of computer hardware. This is the medium of interaction by which the application program and computer hardware are connected.

Almost all the high-end electronic gadgets such as desktop computers, laptop computers, PDAs, notebook computers, the mobile phones comprise some kind of operating system.

Operating systems are of various types. These include Real-time Operating System, Multi-user and Single-user Operating Systems, Multi-tasking and Single-tasking Operating Systems, Distributed Operating System, and Embedded System.

Access Control, Execution of Programs, User Interface, Interrupt Handling, Management of Files, Computer Security, Computer Networking, Memory Management, and Scheduling are some of the most important factors of an Operating System.

For operating system support, you can consult a computer help provider.

Access Control – All the computer operating systems have access control facility with which the administrator can protect the computer from unwanted access and can also limit the access to a user.

Execution of Programs – In computer language, programs in execution are termed as processes.

To execute a program, the operating system kernel generates a process.

It loads program code from the disk and allocate memory to it ahead of running the program.

Memory Management – To run programs, it requires space. And hard disk space is used in this regard.

The operating system kernel takes care of the allocation and management of memory.

All the modern day operating systems apply segmentation and paging mechanisms for memory protection. An OS can use a particular memory location for performing multiple tasks.

The concept of and swapping or paging and virtual memory is used in this context.

Computer Security – You can create multiple user profiles on operating systems.

To protect the user’s security, most of the operating systems need to insert username and password for that particular account.

Management of Files – Operating systems are responsible for handling the application program for accessing files stored on the disk.

Earlier, the OS did not support diverse file systems. But now the system has been changed.

Updated operating systems, like Unix and Linux allow various types of programs for accessing various system resources and devices of different file systems.

Computer Networking – More than one computer could be connected via networking and operating systems play the key role in this regard.

Various networking protocols are supported by the OS and for this reasons, computers running different operating systems don’t have any problem to work over a common network.

By networking protocols users of all the computers can access resources on remote computers very easily.

From the discussion, it is quite evident that operating systems play a very crucial part in facilitating user access to PC.

Operating system not just schedule computer tasks or control access to resources but also manages computer memory and handles various types of files.

Why desktop as a service – daas – is beneficial

Are you tired of your computer running slow, throwing advertisements all over the place, and running out of memory? Read on to see how, without much time or effort, you can fix these problems and prevent them from ever happening again!

Computer slowdowns are a common problem in today’s modern environment. Computers have become such a part of our daily lives (both for work and personal use) that problems with them need to be resolved as quickly as possible.

Thing is, many people spring for a quick solution and end up blowing a ton of money in the process.

The biggest example of this is the case of general slow system operation and minor errors (such as out of memory errors). While buying all new hardware certainly solves the problem, it’s not exactly the most economical solution.

Many of these problems are caused by Adware and Malware, software that ends up getting installed on your computer generally without your knowledge. Most of it is designed to display advertisements on your screen so the creators get paid.

While this is all fine and good for the people who write Adware, it certainly doesn’t spell very good things for your sanity.

Running all of this software takes up a lot of memory to store the advertisements, as well as processor time to decide when to show you an ad, and network bandwidth to download the ads. All in all, your computing experience is a lot better without Adware.

Luckily, there are a number of programs out there that are designed to remove Adware. it’s important to realize that, while similar in some ways, Adware and Viruses are very different.

Most notably, anti-virus software won’t detect adware, or vice versa. Regardless, adware removal software works very similar to anti-virus software, in that it allows you to both remove the problem and set up automatic scanning to ensure that your system keeps running at peak performance!

How to easily remove spyware programs and speed up your computer

June 24th, 2010

For many us in the 21st century, work involves sitting at a computer for much of the day. Almost everyone in business, whether an SME, a home based business, or a large corporation uses computers.

Equally, almost everyone that uses computers uses a network of some sort. In my own case, I have a small home network with a couple of PCs, a couple of printers, a scanner and a few other peripherals that make life easy.

However, when I go into an organisation in order to carry out some training I sometimes take equipment with me. These are normally laptop computers, but I will often take a projector and some other training resources as well.

So why use a network diagram? Well there are several reasons, but these will vary according to the circumstances. Sometimes, your network will be created for a short period of time in order to cover specific activity.

This could be a conference, a training session, or a sales pitch. On other occasions your network will be fixed in terms of the infrastructure, but will need updating when new users join it all when the hardware or software is changed.

What Software is best?

The software you choose in order to create a network diagram will depend on several factors. Elements of Microsoft Office, such as Word, PowerPoint and Visio can all be used with varying degrees of success. If you don’t use Microsoft but prefer the Mac format, Ommnigraffle is the choice of most users.

Specific third-party offerings include Smart Draw, E-draw Soft, Breeze tree and Gliffy; some of these are available on both Windows and Macintosh platforms and each contains its own selection of drawing shapes. For my money, the daddy of all diagramming software is Microsoft Visio Professional edition. Here’s why I recommend using a network diagram:

Reason 1 – Planning

If your network is a permanent fixture, you probably spent some time thinking about how you would configure it before you connected the bits and pieces together.

Even then you may well want to change things as equipment is replaced, and having a network diagram takes a lot of the donkey work out of the process. When you start the planning process you commit your thoughts and ideas to paper, making it easy to change things around later on.

On the other hand, if your network is ad hoc, like mine is when I go on site, having a network diagram enables you to quickly and easily set up the equipment before you begin. A network diagram takes the guesswork out of configuring routers, switches and the other hardware required.

Reason 2 – Security

Whether your network is fixed or not it is a very good idea to have a record of all the equipment contained within it. Indeed, in many cases when equipment is being taken off the site, it is a condition of the insurance company that all serial numbers, asset numbers, logins and passwords are recorded somewhere, and what better place to record all that information?

If you create your network diagram using software such as Microsoft Visio you will be able to add all the relevant information to the shapes representing the hardware.

Visio also allows the creation of an inventory list from its reports feature — a very handy timesaver for a busy network administrator. Once the data has been added to the network diagram it is an easy matter to change it if an additional user or hardware is added.

A variety of reports can be run, including ones created for a specific occasion, including the default choices of a network device report, a network equipment report, a PC report and the inventory report.

Reason 3 – Flexibility

Depending on the software you choose, you may find that you have more or fewer choices when it comes to the type of diagram you want to create. Visio Professional edition comes out tops here again, with incredible versatility that allows the creation of:

* Active directory diagrams

* Equipment rack diagrams

* LDAP diagrams

* Logical and physical network diagrams

* Topologies for large networks and drill-down diagrams

If you work with large networks containing thousands of nodes you can use Visio professional to create high-level diagrams showing, for example, all the routers on your network, or the service providers that support your network in different areas of the country. The Cloud shape on the Network Locations stencil in Visio professional is ideal for representing very high level connectivity.

Summary

Whatever software you choose, having a network diagram will make life much easier. Visio Standard allows you to create basic network diagrams, but with the Professional version you can create detailed network diagrams for networks, directory services diagrams, and rack layouts.

You can add shape data to enhance the appearance of diagrams, allocate equipment to users, record serial numbers, asset keys, manufacturers and specifications and use this data to generate reports on the devices in your network.

Paying attention to install programs

May 9th, 2010

The computer industry has evolved into a world where virtually everyone is trying to install a program that will load whenever you start your computer, generally for their purposes, not yours.

Printer manufacturers, digital camera makers, software companies and a whole host of characters are taking advantage of the users trust and lack of attention to cause much of the ‘slowdown’ issue that we all experience.

The more of these programs that you allow to be installed, the quicker your fast, new computer will seem like its stuck in the mud.

Adding to the problem are all of the malicious software programs lurking in and around the Internet just waiting for an opportunity to sneak into your computer and silently use your computer’s resources in the background without your knowledge.

Keeping this junk from building up in the first place will be much easier (and cheaper) than having to clean it out afterwards. Unfortunately, too many users get frustrated with their old computer’s slowness because of the buildup only to make the same mistakes with the new computer and end up back in the same boat within 6 months of buying the new computer.

If you make the same mistakes, you will end up with the same results on your new computer.

Here’s the number one way to keep most of this junk from ever getting into your computer in the first place: PAY ATTENTION!

What I am referring to is that dizzying (by design) number of screens that come up when you’re installing a new hardware device or software program to your computer.

Most of you click on NEXT, NEXT, NEXT, I AGREE without really understanding what you just agreed to.

For example, I recently setup a new Windows 7 computer in my home and had to install the printer software for my HP multifunction printer/copier/scanner/fax.

During the installation, I was presented with two choices for the installation: Recommended or Custom (‘for advanced users’ to scare you off).

The ‘Recommended’ option tried to make it sound like it was very important that you have what they recommended in order for everything to work properly.

I always choose the ‘Custom’ option, because I am very aware of the sneaky games that these companies play. When I chose the Custom option, the next screen showed the three items that would have been installed had I chosen the Recommended option (which I call the “I Don’t Care What You Do To Me” option).

The first item was the actual printer driver software, the second was a quality assurance customer feedback program and the third was the Yahoo toolbar (shame on you HP!)

Two of the three items only benefit HP and adds additional bloat to your computer, but they are counting on you to be asleep at the wheel. (Simply remove the checkmarks in front of unwanted junk in the future!)

Yahoo essentially has a deal with HP to sneak their toolbar into computers via the software install process; HP is benefiting by fooling you into allowing this to happen.

In this one example, I would have ended up with two unnecessary programs and by the time you get all your initial programs installed on the new computer, you could end up with 10 or 15 because you weren’t paying attention.

HP is not the only company that is doing this (digital camera makers can be worse), which is why you should always choose the Custom or Expert option for ANYTHING you install (hardware or software as they all play this game).

There isn’t enough room in this column to warn you about every malicious scam that can add to the problem, but above all, if you don’t need something, don’t install it.

Stay away from file sharing sites and pirated software and don’t click on anything in an e-mail that prompts you for more information or any site that ‘offers’ you the latest version of a program so you can access a video.

All of these folks (legit or otherwise) are counting on you not paying attention, so do! If you don’t understand what you are being asked during an install, cancel it until you can get someone you trust to help.
