Acer deals schools with 3G-enabled notebooks

December 9th, 2011

Hardware vendor Acer has won a contract that will see the deployment of up to 65000 Acer Aspire 1830T notebooks before the end of the year, to secondary schools in Queensland.

The contract was put for tender by Queensland Department of Education and to supply notebooks for round three of the National Secondary School Computer Fund.

After trials to test viability with students, the Acer Aspire 1830T Notebooks were successfully integrated and provided a digital learning environment without boundaries. The 3G-enabled Acer Notebook is being hailed as a first in Australian education for a program of this scale.

Under the agreement, Acer is set to provide along with the notebooks; a Computrace license protecting against theft; and a student notebook bag customised by Targus for protection and portability.

DET chief information officer David O’Hagan said the rollout of 3G-enabled devices was valuable for students.

“The 3G initiative will ensure more than 60000 state high school students have access to the department’s online learning environment, anywhere and at any time,” he said.

“The decision to purchase 3G laptops means students will have access to important online resources, resulting in improved learning outcomes, collaboration and greater opportunity for personalised learning.”

Acer Computer Australia’s managing director Charles Chung said collaborative and mobile work places are common in IT environments.

“Ensuring our students are well equipped to face tomorrows demand is fundamental in that process,” he said.

“The implementation of HSPA+ 3G technology in the Acer Aspire 1830T Notebook is a key component to the educational development of Queensland students.”

Rugged convertible notebooks in railroad safety

November 24th, 2011

The maximum take-off weight of a Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet is 875,000 pounds. That’s a lot, but even a short train with just a few cars can weigh several times that much. All that weight is supported and guided by two relatively slender steel rails sitting on a bed of rocks and gravel. Put that mass in motion and you can imagine the wear and tear, and the critical importance of the railroad tracks’ integrity to safety. In fact, track defects are the second leading cause of accidents in railroad accidents (the leading cause is human error). That’s why rail inspection is crucial.

Fairclough Corporation Pty Ltd in Autralia is a company that does one thing, design and manufacture equipment that detects flaws in rails as accurately, easily and reliably as possible. They’ve been at it for almost 15 years, and their ULTRAWave and RIPWave analysis systems are second to none.

As the company expanded, they added the Centre for Advanced Transport Engineering and Research (C.A.T.E.R) to meet the growing demand for their technical research and product development. While Fairclough’s initial business was simply to provide service and maintenance support for rail inspection instrumentation, they have now expanded into a comprehensive range of products and services in rail audits, systems engineering and contract rail testing.

At the core of Fairclough Corporation’s business is a variety of advanced rail testing technology that analysis rails for internal and external flaws. This includes ultrasonic testing, imaging, track geometry, ground penetrating radar, and numerous other tests and technologies to determine the condition and soundness of railroad tracks.

Among the various testing systems developed by Fairclough, the CATER HANDWave U/T System is a simple, but sophisticated and powerful rail testing system that is so intuitive to use that little operator training is required. The system consists of proprietary CATER hardware and software, and a Samwell RUGGEDBOOK SR858 tablet computer wheretest data can easily be monitored, examined, exported to Microsoft Office tools, emailed, or shared with other members of the testing team.

Efficient and effective, the HANDWave looks quite simple: There’s a pushcart with a collapsible frame adjustable for different gauges. There’s a wheel probe with five transducers that check all parts of a rail, an RFD module for manual spot assessments, the ULTRAWave ultrasonic processing module, a battery good for about eight hours of testing between charges, a couplant bottle that looks like a scuba tank, and then there is the RUGGEDBOOK convertible notebook computer.

CATER points out that the computers selected for use in their HANDWave testing systems “include the most up-to-date components and are able to run the latest versions of Windows.” CATER further states that they “choose PCs from a respected manufacturer that is able to offer international on-site support, so that problems arising from PC malfunctions can be addressed quickly.”

The Samwell RUGGEDBOOK SR858 is a fully-rugged convertible notebook computer that offers a good balance of size, weight, performance and battery life. Thanks to its swivel hinge, the display can be flipped around so that the computer becomes a tablet. This provides additional flexibility and versatility. The RUGGEDBOOK SR858 has a spacious 13.3-inch touch screen with 1280 x 800 pixel resolution in the wide-format 16:10 aspect ratio. The screen is bright and provides excellent outdoor and even direct sunlight readability.

Lenovo Intros IdeaPad U300s Ultrabook, U300 And U400 Ultraportable Notebooks

September 2nd, 2011

New ultraportables? Lenovo’s got ‘em! Three of them, in fact. The company has just revealed a trio of new “luxury laptops,” the IdeaPad U300s Ultrabook, the standard U300 and the U400. These are a few of Lenovo’s fanciest designs yet, and we suspect the Ultrabook will be the one getting the most attention.

That one is particularly slim, and it’s quite powerful thanks to the Core i7 (2nd-gen) CPU within. Furthermore, there’s an SSD (up to 256GB), 13.3″ HD display, 4GB of DDR3 memory, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB 2.0 + 3.0 ports, a 1.3MP webcam and a chassis that measures just 0.6″ thick. It’s built from a single-piece aluminum shell, and the whole machine weighs in at under 3lbs.

It’ll ship in Graphite Grey or a limited-run Clementine Orange, and there’s even a “one-of-a-kind” breathable keyboard paired with Intel’s Advanced Cooling Technology that enables air to flow through the keys and out of the sides/rear hinge.

Lenovo claims that this guy can last up to 8 hours on a full charge, or up to 30 days on standby.

As for the U300 and U400? They also feature 2nd-gen Core processors and SSDs, with the former having a 13.3″ display and the latter having a 14″ HD display. Both utilize AMD’s Radeon HD 5470M graphics (1GB), and both can be ordered with up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, up to 1TB of HDD storage and up to 256GB of SSD. Furthermore, the U400 has a built-in slot-loading DVD-RW drive.

Battery life? The U300 can last up to six hours, while the U400 can last an hour longer.

All of the units have an HDMI output, SRS Premium Surround Sound and Intel Wireless Display. All three laptops are available in a cool Graphite Gray color, and the U300s also comes in limited-edition Clementine Orange. Starting prices for these laptop models start at $1195 for the U300s and $799 and $849 for the U300 and U400, respectively. They will be sold through select retailers and on www.lenovo.com beginning October 2011.

Google to give away Chrome OS Notebooks for $10-$20/Month subscription?

April 27th, 2011

If the recent rumors are true, you’ll soon be able to get a Chrome OS notebook as a subscription from Google for $10-$20 a month.

According to a report from Neowin , the new Google notebook (probably similar to the Cr-48 test notebook) will be available in late June/early July with this subscription model, which will also include hardware refreshes and repairs. So you’ll always have an up-to-date laptop, albeit one that’s more browser than mean machine.

When my PCWorld colleague Edward N. Albro first looked at the Cr-48, Google’s prototype Chrome OS computer, he found it “little more than a browser in a box” (even though it can be hacked to run Mac OS X and Windows). Because of this, a decision by Google to give the hardware away and just charge a monthly fee makes great sense.

The Cr-48 drew mixed initial impressions all around, but it was only a beta preview for testers and the next iteration of the Google notebook could overcome the pilot notebook’s shortcomings (lack of a caps-lock key, for example), while keeping its nice features (such as fast boot and resume times and over 8 hours of battery life). PCWorld blogger Jared Newman reported last month that Google confirmed on Twitter that Chrome OS notebooks would be coming mid-year. This jives with the Summer 2011 Chrome notebooks rumors we’re now hearing.

It’s an interesting concept–a cheap computer you can get for $240 a year–though not really revolutionary (anyone remember PeoplePC and other “free” PCs?). If a subscription plan isn’t for you, Neowin reports that you’ll be able to purchase the Chrome OS notebook in regular one-time payment fashion as well.

Computerworld has rounded up some comments that pretty much summarize my confused thoughts. What do you think? Will you be subscribing to a Google OS notebook?

December 22nd, 2010

In keeping with every appropriate cliche that accompanies the festive season, Asus has a couple of pricey present ideas for those intending to gift gaming fiends. We’re not saying that the Nvidia 3D Vision-enabled G53Jw and G73Jw notebooks aren’t worth the price tag or ‘ultimate domination’ which is apparently being offered to gamers by Asus India. The notebooks’ 120fps 3D capabilities are also supported by Fermi graphics, 1.5GB GDDR5 Nvidia GeForce GTX 460M graphics, LCD panels with embedded sensors and high fidelity active shutter glasses.
The G53Jw is fitted with a 15.6” HD glare 3D display, while the G73Jw features the same kind of screen though it’s wider by 1.7”. Each notebook is powered by an Intel Quad Core i7-740QM processor, a Mobile Intel HM55 Express chipset and runs the Windows 7 Home Premium OS. Other specs that run common in both devices are listed out as Bluetooth 2.0 and WLAN 802.11b/g/n connectivity, an 8-cell battery, a Blu-ray 4x combo optical drive and a 2MP camera. The G53Jw incorporates 6G DDR3 1033MHz main memory and a 500GB HDD. The G73Jw notebook uses 8G DDR3 1333MHz main memory and a pair of 500G HDDs.

Notebooks from the Asus Republic of Gamers (ROG) series are venerated worldwide for their top notch gaming technology,” trilled Country Manager for Asus System Business, Alex Huang. “With dedicated 3-D usability features that include Full-HD 3D support and 3D Output for any 3D compatible large screen television, the G53 and G73 notebooks provide high resolution 3D graphics leading to almost true-to-life gaming and multimedia experience. Enthusiastic gamers will be absolutely stunned with the extremely vivid and detailed graphic performance and we believe that these notebooks will be the ultimate gifts for gamers this festive season.”
These G series laptops utilize Nvidia’s GTX 460M graphics engine for 3D acceleration on the Blu-ray disc format courtesy of special hardware. EAX Advance HD 5.0 software allows for around 128 additional sound effects borne out of its capability to deliver 3D audio in sync with in-game environments and actions. What’s more, the notebooks’ graphics attributes leverage DirectX 11 features like tessellation and real-time ray tracing. Lengthy gaming sessions should get more comfortable on the 5° inclined keyboard surface and the rear vent cooling exhaust keeps heat as well as noise from distracting users.
The G53JW-IX157V sells for Rs. 1,12,499, while the G73JW-91051V is pricier by Rs. 9,000 or costs Rs. 1,21,499, to be precise. Backed by three-year warranties, each comes bundled with a bag, a mouse, a 3D receiver and glasses.
