MSI Launches Souped Up GT685 Gaming Laptop

January 6th, 2012

MSI Thursday unveiled its latest gaming laptop, the GT685. This 15.6-inch laptop features top-of-the-line hardware, including the Nvidia GeForce GTX 580M graphics card and a second-generation Intel Core i7 quad core processor.

Gaming laptops are all about maximum computer performance, thanks to the demanding graphics of games. So MSI has stuffed this 7.7-pound gaming rig with Nvidia’s latest laptop graphics card with 2GB of video RAM, as well as four DDR3 memory slots for up to 32GB of memory, and a dual hard-drive architecture so you can mix a fast SSD with a large (up to 1.5TB) traditional hard drive.

The Nvidia GTX 580M card is this laptop’s big highlight. Introduced in June last year, Nvidia claims the card is the fastest notebook GPU ever. MSI says in its GT685 press release that the graphic card’s Optimus overclocking means you’ll see crisper and more detailed 3D images on the laptop’s full HD (1920 pixels by 1080 pixels resolution) display.

The GT685 doesn’t have the show-stopping keyboard of sibling MSI GX780, but there is an LED light show you can trigger on the sides of the laptop’s angular frame.

No word on pricing or release date yet. For now, you can mull over the rest of the MSI GT685’s specs:

PassMark Performance Test is a PC hardware benchmark utility that allows a user to quickly assess the performance of their computer and compare it to a number of standard ‘baseline’ computer systems. The Passmark Performance Test CPU tests all benchmark the mathematical operations, compression, encryption, SSE, and 3DNow! instructions of modern processors.

In our tests there were several areas of concentration for each benchmark, which are combined into one compound score. This score is referred to as the CPU Mark, and is a composite of the following tests: Integer Math, Floating Point Math, Find Prime Numbers, SSE/3DNow!, Compression, Encryption, Image Rotation, and String Sorting. For this review, we’ve also decided to run the memory benchmark, which results in a composite score based on the following tests: small block allocation, cached read, uncached read, write performance, and large block allocation.

MSI unveils notebook with E-450 APU, new X460 ultraportables

August 17th, 2011

MSI has unveiled a new value-minded notebook for media fiends. Billed as a “high-end multimedia machine,” the CR430 is packing fresh Fusion silicon from AMD, courtesy of the company’s E-450 APU. That model may be unfamiliar to you considering it isn’t available yet. It’s due sometime this quarter and features two 1.65GHz processing cores, 2 x 512KB of L2 cache, a 508-600MHz Radeon HD 6320 graphics core, and support for DDR3 1333MHz RAM

That’s up from the HD 6310 and 1066MHz RAM support in the E-240, E-300 and E-350 — the latter of which we reviewed in February and found it to be more powerful than the Intel Atom CPU and Nvidia Ion GPU. Accompanying the new Zacate chip will be a 14-inch 1366×768 LED-backlit display, 320GB to 640GB of storage, a DVD burner, HDMI and VGA outputs, a multi-card reader, USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports, Wi-Fi, a 720p webcam, and a six-cell battery.

Although MSI hasn’t shared the CR430’s pricing or release date yet, such details are available for the company’s X460 and X460DX. Launched today, the sub-inch-thick ultraportables are available in three configurations ranging from $800 to $1,200. Although the systems share common features like a 14-inch 1366×768 display, Wi-Fi, HDMI and USB 3.0 connectivity and an eight-hour battery life, the core specifications change between models:

If you intend to purchase a laptop for anything graphically demanding, you’ll likely want to opt for the base or mid-range configuration. The $1,200 machine loses Nvidia’s GeForce GT 540M graphics chip and Optimus graphics-switching functionality, but gains double the processor cache (6MB) and supports Intel’s Wireless Display (WiDi) technology. As a side note, MSI is also preparing a Windows tablet that we plan to review in the near future.

MSI Say No To Android Announcing A Windows 7 Home Premium Tablet

July 11th, 2011

It will be born WindPad 110W, powered by a 1GHz dual core processor and featuring a Radeon HD 6250 Graphics card, with 80 stream processors clocked at 276MHz. Applications are taken care of by its 4GB of DDR3 which are strapped to the single-channel memory controller. This tablet’s impressive hardware will deliver a rivalling gaming experience on its 10″ screen with a resolution of 1280 x 800.

To complete the Windpad 110W, it has a 32GB Solid State Drive, 2 full sized USB ports, and a mini-HDMI socket.
Certainly the hardware isn’t biblical by the likes of the Windows 7 PC fraternity, but when considering its tablet competitors, it outranks them on a number of fronts.

It’s interesting to note that, while adopters of Android’s honeycomb tablets try to promote the mobile OS to a computer like experience, MSI are attempting to convert the powerful Windows 7 computer OS to a mobile tablet, going against the grain.

As Anandtech reports, the MSI WindPad falls short with its dreary 1.3 megapixel cameras. Compared to the Samsung’s 10.1v, which offers an 8 megapixel rear and 2 megapixel front facing camera, it won’t be the first choice for photography…But then again, who buys a 10 inch tablet to take photos?
