LG scraps plans for Android 2.2 tablet

October 4th, 2010

LG Electronics delayed its planned Android tablet, according to multiple reports, a move that likely will push the release of a LG tablet into next year.
“We plan to introduce a tablet that runs on the most reliable Android version,” an unnamed LG official told Reuters. “We are in talks with Google to decide on the most suitable version for our tablet and that is not Froyo 2.2.” Another unnamed LG official told Bloomberg the company plans to debut the tablet at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January. The company is finished with the hardware, but is fine-tuning the software, the official said.
LG first announced in July plans for an Android 2.2 tablet, and said at the time it would release the device in the fourth quarter.
The tablet delay is the latest setback in LG’s mobile efforts. The company sacked its CEO, Nam Yong, last month–and replaced him with Koo Bon-joon, a member of the founding family of the LG conglomerate–amid weak handset sales. The company also brought in a new mobile chief, promoting Park Jong Suk, who had been the head of LG’s handset research center.
The decision by LG to push back its tablet plans is interesting because a Google executive said last month that the latest version of Android–Froyo or 2.2–is not optimized for tablets. “But the way Android Market works is it’s not going to be available on devices that don’t allow applications to run correctly,” Hugo Barra, the director of mobile products at Google, told TechRadar. “Which devices do, and which don’t, will be unit specific, but Froyo is not optimized for use on tablets. If you want Android Market on that platform, the apps just wouldn’t run, [Froyo] is just not designed for that form factor

LG to make smartphones based on nvidia tegra 2

September 9th, 2010

LG Electronics and Nvidia Corp. have announced that the former would release a line of smartphones based on Nvidia Tegra 2 system-on-chip (SoC). The first products based on the Nvidia technology will be available late this year and will use Google Android operating system.

“LG selected NVIDIA Tegra because it enables a new mobile experience and content capabilities. Tegra 2 features a number of mobile “firsts”: the first mobile dual-core CPU, the only ultra low-power NVIDIA GeForce? GPU and the first 1080p HD mobile video processor,” a statement by LG reads.

LG will integrate Tegra 2 into its Optimus-series smartphones, which is a new line of innovative mobile products that are due in Q4 2010. No details about the new cell phones are officially known at the moment. Nonetheless, it is logical to expect large screens, numerous connectivity technologies and orientation mostly on those, who demand high performance and rich feature-set.

LG is the first company to adopt Nvidia Tegra 2 for a mass product. Earlier a number of companies demonstrated prototypes of devices based on Tegra SoCs, but those products have never reached mass production. What is rather noteworthy is that LG earlier this year demonstrated a high-end smartphone powered by Intel Corp.’s Moorestown mobile SoC, but later decided not to release it commercially.

Nvidia Tegra 2 SoCs features dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 central processing unit, GeForce graphics core with programmable pixel shader and programmable vertex shader support (OpenGL ES 2.0 compatible), build-in low-power DDR2 memory controller, NAND flash memory controller, audio processor, high-definition video processor that supports MPEG 4, H.264, VC-1/WMV9 decoding, H.264 and MPEG4 encoding and features some other capabilities. At present Nvidia does not reveal a lot of technical details about the Tegra 2, but claims that it has about 4 times performance advantage compared to the first-generation Tegra SoC.

“LG is committed to making its Optimus Series smart devices the de facto standard in speed and graphics performance,” said Chang Ma, vice president of marketing strategy team at LG Mobile Communications Company.

LG shockingly says its Android Optimus tablet will be better than the iPad

August 21st, 2010

LG played the internet like a fiddle today when its VP of marketing, Chang Ma, told the Wall Street Journal that its upcoming Android Optimus tablet “will be better than the iPad.”

Clearly, this man is a marketing genius. What better way is there to get the word out about its device — which we initially caught word of in early July — than saying it’ll be better than a highly successful Apple product.

Surely none of the other hardware manufacturers preparing Android tablets — which at this point includes Asus, Acer, Dell, and many others — actually think their devices stand a chance against the iPad. LG, through its complex oratory jiujitsu, has declared itself the next king of tablets — despite the fact that we know practically nothing about the Optimus tablet.

All we have to go on now is nothing more than vague promises. “It’s going to be surprisingly productive,” Ma said. Users will be able to write documents, edit video, and it will have some “high-end features and new benefits” with a productivity bent.

He reiterated the sentiment of many iPad critics who deride the device as something primarily meant for content consumption, rather than productivity. But while I would agree that the iPad isn’t an ideal productivity device, nothing about LG’s Optimus tablet seems to be any more productive. iPad users can already create documents, and there are existing apps like ReelDirector for video editing (Apple will certainly release an iMovie app for the iPad as well).

There aren’t any hardware details for LG’s Optimus tablet yet, but you can expect a screen around 10 inches, and enough power under the hood to run Android 3.0 (to be released later this year). LG expects to launch the tablet worldwide by the fourth quarter.

In other news, the company is also revamping its smartphone line in September with the release of the Android-powered Optimus One. The phone won’t be a hardware powerhouse, but LG expects it to be a “gateway smartphone” for new users. Eventually, it will release more powerful Android devices. The company has plans to use Nvidia’s dual-core CPU in the fourth quarter, and it’s also gearing up for 4G phones running LTE technology in 2011.
