Lenovo emerges as top PC seller in India, overtakes Dell & HP

May 15th, 2012

For the first time, Chinese personal computer maker Lenovo has cornered the largest share in the overall Indian PC market, overtaking Dell and Hewlett-Packard (HP), according to data from market researcher IDC.

Latest data shows that Lenovo has a market share of 15.8% in the three months to March 31, compared to 10% in the previous period, which had put the Chinese PC-maker at 4th spot then. Dell, which is at number two spot, saw its market share shrink by 2.6 % while HP follows with a market share of 14.9 % in the March quarter.

With the top spot switching among HP, Dell and Lenovo, Indian PC market is witnessing high competition, especially as the PC penetration here is extremely low and hardware makers sense a long-term opportunity.

Lenovo’s push to the top was aided by a large order from the Tamil Nadu government to supple free laptops to graduating school children – a promise made during last year’s state assembly elections. A few months ago, Tamil Nadu announced procurement of 9 lakh laptops at about 14,000 a piece. Lenovo, along with HCL Infosystems and Acer, had bagged the contract.

Coming out of a slump, the Indian PC market grew 7.7% in the first quarter of the year as a revival in consumer sentiment backed by strong sales in semi-urban areas pushed sales upwards.

According to IDC, nearly 2.63 million units were shipped from January to March this year. Consumer segment grew the most at 19.6% in the first quarter of 2012 over the same period last year.

“Consumer-led sales are a healthy sign,” said Adwaita Govind Menon, associate director & head of new products at the Indian arm of IDC.

“The growth in the consumer category is seen primarily in the portable PCs as consumer purchase pattern shifts away from the desktop devices towards more compact and mobile devices such as notebooks, mini-notebooks and other ultra portable PCs,” said Kiran Kumar, senior market analyst at IDC.

As governments in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab gear up to fulfil election promises, more such government deals are likely to happen in the last quarter of this fiscal year.

Despite being the festive season, computer sales had gone down in the December quarter last year because of a shortage of hard disks and fluctuations in the value of rupee against other currencies, especially dollar. Brands that are importing components or the whole PC to sell it in India are struggling because of the price rise and foreign exchange fluctuations.

“Everyone is making a loss in the Tamil Nadu deal,” said Menon. Though sequential growth of 7.7 % is encouraging, a year-on-year growth of 3.5% is not enough, feel PC makers.

“Comparatively, emerging markets are growing 15-16%,” said Amar Babu, Managing Director, Lenovo India. Going by the low PC penetration level, India should grow much faster and consumer buying needs to go up, said Babu.

Commercial PC market slowed down in the first quarter, dropping by about 6% year-on-year. “This is largely because of cautious spending by enterprises even as fears of global downturn remains to simmer down,” said Kumar.

Lenovo ThinkStation E31 aims to be small in size, high on performance

May 14th, 2012

The Lenovo ThinkStation E31 mini-tower and small form factor (SFF) variants were recently announced by the Beijing-based manufacturer. These compact rigs are said to be designed to maintain a PC-like budget while still being high on performance and productivity.

Aimed towards professionals seeking a low-cost, but efficient system, these new Thinkstation builds will be filed under the entry-level segment. So what do they pack in? Firstly, there are options from some of the latest Intel processors, the Xeon E3 1200 v2 and third generation Core i7. Both CPUs can be combined with either the integrated HD Graphics P4000 or the Nvidia Quadro family up to the Q4000 in the tower version and Q600 in the SFF one.

“The ThinkStation E31 an ideal choice for small-to-medium businesses or professionals that need more power and performance than they are getting out of their desktop computer,” commented Robert Herman, director of product and vertical solutions, Workstation Business Unit, Lenovo. “We have worked closely with customers to figure out how to deliver compact design, reliable hardware components and comprehensive support for the latest ISV applications to meet their needs. The ThinkStation E31 offers businesses a powerful way to get more from their business applications without breaking the bank.”

The new workstations come with 1600MHz of DDR3 ECC RAM that’s apparently capable of correcting memory-related failures. It even proffers better responsiveness in applications and swift multitasking. Along with the Windows 7 Professional edition platform, the manufacturer has thrown in a couple of USB 3.0 ports as well as up to 9TB of storage in the tower version and a maximum of 6TB for the SFF variant.

The Lenovo ThinkStation E31 release date is scheduled for July 13, 2012. For price details, both mini-tower and SFF variants will be available for approximately $629 through Lenovo business partners and the company’s website.

Lenovo debuts business desktop systems

May 10th, 2012

Lenovo has developed a number of new business systems, including two compact desktops and a 23-inch all-in-one computer. The manufacturer simultaneously debuts a new ThinkVision 2-inch” IPS-monitor, also intended for business users.

ThinkCentre M92p en M72e

The two small desktop systems are named ThinkCentre M92p and M72e and are no thicker than a golf ball (3.45 cm). Their one-litre volume makes these machines extraordinarily small, while offering virtually the same functionality as a large desktop PC. The systems are powered by an Intel Core processor based on the LGA 1155 socket. Processor choices include the latest and most-efficient Ivy Bridge processors. These chips perform exceptionally well when it comes to office use, while the integrated Intel GPU allows for smooth video conferencing and offers support to up to three monitors simultaneously. The special ‘Mozaik Mode’ even allows four monitors to be hooked up. As a result, no separate graphics card is present in the two desktop systems, that are both compatible with Intel’s business vPro features.

Both cases have a TPM module, a WiFi receiver, an unknown amount of memory and up to 1 TB of storage (both hard disks and SSDs are possible). Lenovo bundles the ‘Enhanced Experience 3 for Windows 7′ (EE3) software with the machines, which should allow the operating system to boot faster. Also bundled is ‘PC Cloud Manager for vPro’, which manages all desktops on the business network through a web interface. Given the limited dimensions and hardware, it doesn’t come as a surprise that the two desktops are very efficient. The ThinkCentre M92p and M72e both have EPEAT Gold, UL Environment Gold, Energy Star, GREENGUARD and Cisco EnergyWise certificates.

ThinkCentre M92z

The ThinkCentre M92z is an all-in-one computer that will be available in both 20-inch and 23-inch versions. The specifications are pretty similar to the desktop systems, the difference being a dedicated AMD Radeon graphics card. These all-in-ones are aimed at the business market with features like Intel’s vPro, a high-resolution webcam for video conferencing, integrated audio with ‘Dolby Advanced’ enhancements, an integrated microphone and WiFi support. This machine also comes with several efficiency and durability certificates.

ThinkVision LT2323z

Lenovo claims that the ThinkVision LT2323z is the first monitor with a Microsoft Lync qualification, which relates to the quality of the monitor during video conversations. In order to receive this qualification, Lenovo combined a high-quality IPS panel with an integrated ‘Full HD’ webcam, two microphones (for filtering and damping) and two speakers. The monitor also has a user-friendly stand, which allows the screen to be adjusted in height, as well as rotated. The 23-inch monitor has the UL Environment Gold, Energy Star, TCO Edge and EPEAT Golf certificates. Lenovo states that the monitor is also the first to receive a TUV Green Mark certification.

The ThinkCentre M72e and M92p desktops will cost $499 and $799, while the all-in-one system starts at $799. The price of the 23-inch monitor has yet to be determined, as are the UK prices.
