Sony launches PlayStation Vita in Japan

December 19th, 2011

Sony’s long-awaited PlayStation Vita portable game machine has hit stores in Japan as thousands of game enthusiasts lined up at stores from early in the morning.

Sony is predicting brisk sales, even though Saturday’s launch may have missed some holiday shoppers. A successful debut would help the company offset the rest of its struggling business.

The device is a touch-interface and motion-sensitive handheld seen as a successor to the PlayStation Portable. Vita’s launch would heat up competition with rival Nintendo Co’s 3DS.

Many of the purchasers Saturday had made advance orders on the internet so they can start playing immediately.

The PS Vita goes on sale in North America and Europe on February 22. Sony’s long-awaited PlayStation Vita portable game machine hit stores in Japan on Saturday as thousands of game enthusiasts lined up early in the morning to be among the first to buy it.

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. is predicting brisk sales, even though the launch may have missed some holiday shoppers. A successful debut would help the company offset the rest of its struggling business. Sony projects a loss of more than $1 billion for the fiscal year through March 2012, which would be its fourth straight annual loss.

In Tokyo’s Ikebukuro shopping district, some 300 game enthusiasts lined up outside a major electronics chain that opened a few hours earlier than usual for the event. Many of the purchasers had made advance orders on the Internet so they could start playing immediately.

The device is a touch-interface and motion-sensitive handheld seen as a successor to the PlayStation Portable. Gamers can connect over cellphone networks and Wi-Fi hotspots, and use GPS location-tracking technology.

Television footage showed some shoppers unwrapping their new purchases and starting to try them out at the store.

“I’m so happy to see so many people lining up for PS Vita so early in the morning,” Sony Computer Entertainment Japan President Hiroshi Kono wrote in his official blog after touring several Tokyo stores. “I can tell they had anxiously waited for today’s launch.”

For the Tokyo-based electronics and entertainment giant, the Vita is the biggest product launch since the PlayStation 3 console five years ago. It’s also accompanied by two dozen software products-the largest number of launch titles in PlayStation history.

The Vita has front and back cameras, a touchscreen in front, a touch pad on the back and two knob-like joysticks. It will enable gamers to play against each other using PlayStation 3 consoles over the Internet-based PlayStation Network, a system that was hit with a massive hacking attack earlier this year.

Vita’s launch will heat up competition with rival Nintendo Co.’s 3DS. Nintendo Co’s 3DS had a disappointing start despite the company’s efforts to market its 3D technology, with critics complaining about a lack of interesting games. Nintendo ended up slashing prices on the 3DS within six months.

The companies are challenged by the rise of smartphones and tablets, through which casual gamers play inexpensive and simple games like the mega-hit “Angry Birds.”

ClearCube Launches Secure Blade PC and Secure Workstation

May 10th, 2010

ClearCube Technology, the leader in rack mounted secure workstations, blade PCs and centralized computing, today announced the launch of the R3040SS secure workstation blade and R3080DS secure blade PC, which deliver unprecedented network computer security, by utilizing the Intel Advanced Encryption Standard-New Instructions (AES-NI) for encryption acceleration and Intel Trusted Execution Technology (TXT).

The ClearCube R3040SS secure workstation blade and R3080DS secure blade PC incorporate the latest processor advancements from Intel that include AES-NI that facilitates full hardware-based AES acceleration. Therefore, organizations that rely on AES for data encryption can do so without the performance limitations. AES-NI is comprised of six new instructions that enhance overall encryption performance as well as guarding against side channel exploits. In software-only implementations of AES, side channels present a threat vector that can be utilized for attacks and represent significant risk of encryption key exposure. The new ClearCube secure blade workstations with Intel AES-NI eliminates that threat.

In addition, the ClearCube R3040SS secure workstation blade and R3080DS secure blade PC include Intel processors that are enabled with Intel TXT. The processor executes new SMX (Safer Mode Extensions) instructions, which generate a binary hash (a number generated by a formula) of all system software, including operating systems, applications and VMMs. The hash is performed in a secure area of the processor and the results are stored in the TPM. The new hash values are verified with the previous values before any software is allowed to start execution, thus preventing system tampering.

“With more than 345 million records containing sensitive information being compromised in security breaches since January of 2005, it is critical for enterprises to secure computing environments,” said David Grawrock, Senior Principal Engineer and Security Architect at Intel. “Not only does ClearCube have the inherent security of placing the PC in the data center versus the desktop but they’ve also collaborated with Intel to deploy our latest security advancements in their blade workstations that mitigate many of the common threat vectors.”

In addition to incorporating Intel’s AES-NI and TXT into the architecture, ClearCube has included its patent-pending mass storage lockout capability in the R3080DS and R3040SS blade workstations. Mass storage lockout is a hardware security setting that prevents unauthorized storage devices from connecting to the ClearCube blade workstation.

“We continue to see strong demand for secure computing solutions for government, financial services and CAD environments in order to protect intellectual property and top secret data,” said Randy Printz, CEO of ClearCube Technology. “When the US Department of Defense banned USB storage devices we were first to respond with a hardware security layer that prevented USB storage devices from connecting to our blade workstations. The R3040SS and R3080DS are the latest examples of our commitment to secure computing.”

USB storage devices have often been the source of malware attacks as well as internal data breaches which have resulted in billions of dollars in losses. The ClearCube R3040SS and R3080DS blade workstations eliminate these threats from USB storage devices.

In addition, the R3040SS and R3080DS can operate over copper or fiber networks and include the Teradici PCoIP remoting protocol option which provides hardware compression and data encryption to deliver a high performance secure workstation experience with multi-monitor support to the end-user.

Combining the new ClearCube secure workstation blades and blade PCs with a ClearCube secure zero client and Sentral 6.1 management software provides additional security fortification.

SLP Subsidiary Words+ Launches EyePro(TM) System

May 10th, 2010

Words+, Inc., a leading provider of augmentative communication and assistive technology hardware and software for people with disabilities, announced today that it has launched EyePro(TM), a new product that allows a person to operate an augmentative communication system or computer by simply looking at the screen. Words+ is a wholly owned subsidiary of Simulations Plus, Inc. (SLP 2.10, -0.15, -6.67%) .

Jeff Dahlen, president of Words+, said: “Eyegaze technology has become an increasingly important input method for people using augmentative communication (Speech Generating Devices) and other assistive technologies, especially for those who are severely physically limited by progressive diseases such as ALS (‘Lou Gehrig’s disease’). Until now, we have only been able to provide limited eyegaze technology in special cases due to the prohibitive cost as a third party provider, and we couldn’t effectively market certain proprietary communication techniques we have developed. This negatively impacted our sales to people with ALS, as well as other sales opportunities. Having negotiated an appropriate confidential OEM distribution agreement, we are now able to provide our own eyegaze product and implement new Words+ proprietary communication techniques profitably at current market prices.”

Gaylon Ponder, national sales manager for Words+, added: “Introducing EyePro(TM) not only allows us to better meet the needs of the customers we serve, but it also significantly increases the size and effectiveness of our national sales force in two ways. First, we gain the full attention of our multiline dealers, who were previously spending a significant amount of their sales time representing an eyegaze product from a different manufacturer, and second, we add eyegaze to the product line of our sales employees and exclusive Words+ dealers. We are taking orders, and delivered two EyePro systems to Veterans with ALS during the first week of May.”
