Indian ICT exports to hit $75bn

August 22nd, 2011

ICT export for the current fiscal year in India is projected at 15% ($75 billion), according to the Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council, reports The Times of India.

According to the organisation, software and services export would be $64 billion, growing at 10% and electronics hardware would grow by 30% to $10 billion in the current year.

The Economic Times says electronics hardware export in the first four months grew by 48% ($3.72 billion) over the same period last year.

The council says downgrading of US credit rating would not have any impact on the Indian IT industry as US government’s share in outsourcing was negligible.
The Telegraph India reveals that India’s 10% software and ICT service export growth is a sharp reduction from the 30% growth forecast prior to the 2008 recession.

India’s premier ICT event kicks off in tech hub Bangalore

October 28th, 2010

India’s premier information and communication technology (ICT) event “Bangalore IT.biz 2010″ got underway in this tech hub on Thursday on an upbeat note, with the IT industry returning to the growth path after a year of downturn.

With “Billion-strong Empowered by ICT” as the theme of the conference, the inaugural session of three-day event witnessed the launch of the electronic public call offices (e-PCOs) in Karnataka under the public-private partnership by chief guest, Union Minister of State for Communications and IT Sachin Pilot.

Promoted by state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Karnataka State Electronics Development Corporation Ltd (Keonics) with global chip maker Intel and Suvidha Group, the ePCOs will be set up across the state to ensure employment to those who were operating PCOs before the mobile revolution rendered landline phone redundant.

“About 5,000 e-PCOs will be set up across the state this fiscal year with a computer and high speed broadband connectivity for Internet facility to offer a range of e-services, including utility payments, booking of air, train and bus tickets and e-mail for citizens in urban and rural areas,” state IT and BT (biotechnology) Minister Katta Subramanya Naidu said on the occasion.

The Karnataka government has taken the initiative to bail out about 200,000 PCOs across the state affected by the mobile revolution, by equipping them with a computer and Internet for providing a range of e-services to citizens and ensure steady income for self-employed operators.

Naidu also announced that the state government would soon enter into a bilateral agreement with the Israeli industry to share latest technologies and collaborate in research and development projects.

“Keonics and the Israeli industry centre (Matimop) will soon sign the joint agreement to facilitate the sharing of ICT for the benefit of the people spawning urban and rural areas,” Naidu told about 600 delegates participating in the event.

Though Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Telecom Minister A. Raja were to attend the inaugural event, their absence was made up by young Pilot, who inspired IT honchos and delegates by his spirited speech, exhorting them to diversify their export destinations to South America, Africa and Asia, avoid commoditizing their services and replicate the software success in hardware (electronic products).

“The prowess and tremendous progress of the Indian IT industry despite global downturn once again demonstrated that the sector is not only resilient to sustain robust growth, but also has the talent and resources to thrive in the global arena,” Pilot said.

Delivering the presidential address, Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa said the state government was revising its ICT policy to include telecom as mobile telephony was bound to be the growth engine of the rural economy.

“The revised ICT policy will be announced soon. Electronic hardware also has tremendous potential as there is huge domestic market for electronic products. A policy is under consideration to promote electronics hardware manufacturing in the state,” Yeddyurappa said.

IT players urge orissa government to finalise new ICT policy

September 13th, 2010

Information Technology (IT) units operating in the state have urged the Orissa government to expedite steps to finalize the draft ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) policy.

The finalization of the draft ICT policy has been delayed and no major ground has been gained despite two rounds of meetings with the stakeholders.

“Even after two rounds of meetings with the different stakeholders, no headway has been made in the finalization of the draft ICT policy. We have urged the state IT department to take all necessary steps to finalize the new ICT policy which is pending”, said a top official of Confederation of Information Technology Enterprises (CITE), an association of IT firms operating in the state.

The state IT department had constituted a sub-committee, consisting of 12 members to prepare the draft of the new ICT policy through consultations with the necessary stakeholders.

The sub-committee formed to decide the features of the new ICT policy has members chosen from the state IT department, Orissa Computer Application Centre (OCAC), CITE and the Information Technology Association of Orissa (ITAO).

The state IT department was formulating a new ICT policy after a gap of five years.

The new ICT policy was to incorporate the best IT practices of states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Kerala

The draft ICT policy was to be circulated to the relevant departments of the state government like finance and industries for incorporating their suggestions and inputs.

Apart from including the best IT practices of states like Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and positioning Orissa as a favourable destination for IT investments, the new ICT policy also would also contain enabling measures for growth of IT SMEs (small and medium enterprises).

Earlier, the IT SMEs had demanded the formulation of a focussed ICT (information and communication technology) policy which provides an investment subsidy of 15-20 per cent on a capital cost of up to Rs 20 lakh for the upcoming IT units. The SMEs had also sought complete exemption from VAT (value added tax) on hardware procurement by the units as well as ‘plug and play’ office space for the upcoming units.

The new ICT policy of the Orissa government assumes significance as the state had emerged as one of the attractive destinations for the IT sector.

While the big four of the IT sector including Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys Technologies, Wipro Technologies and Satyam Computers already have a presence in Orissa, other IT players like MindTree Consulting, Genpact, Zensar Technologies, Mumbai-based Raheja Corporation and Kolkata-based Apeejay Surrendra Group had also announced their projects in the state.
