ATI HD 7770 and 7750 Graphics Cards Land at AVADirect

February 27th, 2012

AVADirect announced that it now includes ATI HD 7770 and 7750 graphics cards in its product lineup. The company actually has quite a few; there are three 7750s (from ASUS, Gigabyte, and MSI) and no fewer than eight 7770s (from ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, Sapphire, and XFX).

AVADirect suggests that the although it’s offering the 7770 and 7750 as alternatives to the NVIDIA GTX 560 Ti and GTX 550 Ti cards, respectively, it doesn’t feel that the performance is exactly comparable and that the value should be measured in terms of dollar value for performance.

But for “those on a tight budget, or all you heat-hating enthusiasts that want great performance without the large price tag”, AVADirect suggests the ATI options.

The between-the-lines bit of news here is that after being released just a week and a half ago, there are plenty of 7770 and 7750 versions available from your favorite graphics card manufacturers.

Maingear Gets Busy Building Machines with New AMD Radeon HD 7950 Graphics Cards

February 1st, 2012

The PC building gurus at Maingear wasted no time in jumping on the official release of AMD’s new Radeon HD 7950 graphics cards (see our official review here), which are now offered on Maingear’s line of desktop PCs. And if you really want to get wild, you can combine the new offering with Maingear’s EPIC 180 liquid cooling solution and EPIC Audio Engine for what the company claims is a one of a kind gaming experience.

“High performance PC users looking for a no-compromise solution need to look no further than a Maingear system equipped with our custom EPIC solutions and an AMD Radeon HD 7900 series graphics card,” said Wallace Santos, CEO and Founder of Maingear.

We’ll forgive Maingear for the generic quote since these guys are anything but (check out our factory tour of Maingear here). There’s also nothing generic about the new 7950 part, which is built on the same 28nm manufacturing process as the 7970 and uses the same “Tahiti” GPU architecture. Other than being a little on the pricey side, we were generally impressed with the 7950.

Maingear’s offering the 7950 option on its Shift and F131 desktops, which start at $1,998 and $1,326, respectively, or $2,313 and $1,833 if upgrading the stock GPU to a 7950.

Ubisoft DRM Monitors Computer Hardware, Breaks When You Change Graphics Cards

January 17th, 2012

Ubisoft has been annoying PC gamers with its DRM for quite awhile now. PC gamers will find more reason to sulk about the company’s attitude upon the discovery that Ubisoft’s limited activation scheme is not only machine specific, but also hardware specific. Specifically, the DRM will know if you’ve replaced a graphics card.

A game like Ubisoft’s Anno 2070 will not run if and when you swap out a graphics card. For gamers who regularly update their systems, such an action can render every game in their Ubisoft library worthless. Guru3D discovered this DRM ‘feature’ while they were trying to run a benchmark on the aforementioned game.

According to the website, the game simply stopped working when they swapped out the card. Attempts to reinstall the game and reactivate it were met with failure, as the DRM had assumed—wrongly—that the copy-protection was tampered with.

The company’s insistence on implementing heavy-handed DRM into its games has earned it a formidable amount of ire from the PC gaming community, especially since the games it releases on Steam already come with their own copy-protection, courtesy of Valve.

PNY Launches GeForce Liquid Cooled Graphics Cards

August 17th, 2011

PNY Technologies, Inc. launches their all-in-one Liquid Cooled Graphics solution, now available to consumers nationwide. The new line of Liquid Cooled Graphics will debut with two options: the XLR8 Liquid Cooled GeForce GTX 580 and XLR8 Liquid Cooled GeForce GTX 580 with CPU Cooling.

PNY and Asetek, a leader in CPU thermal management, have combined forces to launch a high-end Liquid Cooled Graphics solution geared towards gaming enthusiasts. Consumers will receive a fully integrated XLR8 GeForce GTX liquid cooled graphics system, with a combination GPU/CPU cooling version available as well. Engineered with a closed loop system, and built with an Asetek sealed water cooler already attached, the PNY design offers consumers an out-of-the-box ready, simple to install and reliable product.

PNY’s new Liquid Cooled Graphics system delivers significant benefits, with up to 30% cooler temperatures, 30% quieter acoustics and 10% faster performance than the standard reference designed NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 graphics card. With increased overclocking headroom versus air cooled, the liquid keeps overall temperature and noise levels low, while providing better performance for gamers. With a 30% reduction in temperature, PC parts are protected due to lower exposure to hot temperatures. Additionally, less noise is produced as fans aren’t running at maximum speed to compensate for the heat. Lower acoustics means a quieter gaming environment for more intense concentration and the option for gamers to eliminate the use of headphones to mask noise levels. The overall advantage is extreme performance and higher frame rates without the heat.

“Designed to increase performance while reducing noise and temperature, PNY’s Liquid Cooled Graphics offers the fastest factory-overclocked card currently on the market at 857 MHz,” said Nicholas Mauro, senior marketing manager, PC components for PNY. “The simple all-in-one design offers a powerful, yet easy to install and cost-effective gaming solution that’s backed by the PNY warranty. This highly anticipated graphics option will enable more enthusiast gamers to experience gaming in a whole new way.”

The first 100 consumers to purchase from PNY.com will receive a special promotional launch bundle. With the purchase of a Liquid Cooled GTX 580 on PNY.com, consumers will receive over $100 worth of bonus PNY gear: a 16ft Active High Speed HDMI Mini to HDMI Cable, a custom-built PNY 8GB ‘Liquid Cooled’ USB Flash Drive, and a ‘Liquid Cooled’ logo T-shirt.
