Helps Competitive Gamers Push the Limits of Hardcore Gaming

–Tweet This: Dell unveils Alienware Aurora: the most advanced gaming desktop ever. Link #Alienware

Competitive gamers asked for the ultimate gaming pc, and Dell’s new Alienware Aurora gaming desktop computer, unveiled today, delivers. It is the company’s most advanced desktop ever delivering the extreme gaming performance and experience game developers intended for their players. With the latest technology and intelligent design, gamers can envelop themselves in the action, experience blazing fast performance and immersive graphics.

– The Aurora desktop delivers the pure, raw power that gamers crave. The systems come loaded with the new 2nd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3000 series six-core CPUs, factory overclocked(1) and liquid cooled, with the Intel X79 Express Chipset (Dell’s first consumer system to offer this chipset), Quad Channel DDR3(2) memory and the latest SATA technology.

– Gamers can literally “see” all that power firsthand. Dual graphics cards and beyond 1080p gaming with immersive multi-display and 3D HD(3) capabilities allow gamers to experience any game at its best — as intended by the game developers.

– And the gaming desktops are intelligently designed for unparalleled customization. In addition to raw power, an innovative chassis design and intuitive internal component layout allows for user-friendly upgrades and optimized thermal management.

Purposeful Cool Design

Designed from the inside out with performance, function and style in mind, Alienware Aurora’s chassis delivers a purposeful internal layout in a sleek, beautiful and compact form factor.

The desktop’s maintenance-free, high performance CPU Liquid Cooling replaces the standard heat sink and fan that comes with most PCs, and its Active Venting system provides additional heat dissipation during heavy gaming. This unique design increases component longevity and allows Aurora to stay nearly twice as quiet as competitors with traditional heat sink and fan layouts. Additionally, all core components inside the Aurora are purposefully compartmentalized in chambers that provide clean, clear and easy tool-less access for upgrades, maintenance or showing off.

Supporting AMD CrossFireX technology, Alienware Aurora is capable of housing two graphics cards for maximum performance and extreme graphics power. All Aurora graphics cards use GDDR5 graphics memory(2), the most advanced offering available. With Microsoft’s DirectX 11 graphics API, complex virtual worlds will come alive.

“The PC gaming industry continues to grow rapidly, and our customers are demanding systems that can keep up with the most graphic-intensive games on the market,” said Arthur Lewis, vice president, Alienware and Product Management for Consumer, Small and Medium Business. “Alienware Aurora, our most advanced gaming desktop ever, delivers an experience that will exceed the expectations of any serious gamer.”

Complete Control

All Alienware laptops and desktops come complete with the Alienware Command Center, which provides intuitive, user-friendly access to exclusive applications and controls, including AlienFX lighting effects, Thermal Controls and AlienFusion power management system. AlienFX allows users to customize the exterior lighting zones on the chassis with over 25 billion color combinations for a one-of-a-kind personalized experience. Updates and new releases download directly into Command Center, creating a constantly evolving tool for users to modify and personalize their gaming computer.

Gaming Supremacy

Alienware is recognized throughout the industry and with customers alike for performance, functionality and design. The Alienware M17x gaming laptop with Intel Sandy Bridge processors recently won Gold in the Gaming category for “The Best Products of 2011″ from PC Magazine, and the Alienware M11x R3 laptop won Silver. As new technology is released, look for Alienware to continually offer the latest in PC gaming hardware, partnering with other industry leaders to deliver an optimized gaming experience.

NVIDIA SLI Multi-GPU Technology Paired With Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition Processors Power World’s Fastest Desktop Gaming Platforms

November 15th, 2011

NVIDIA today announced that system builders worldwide are now shipping the fastest PC gaming platforms ever built, thanks in part to NVIDIA(R) SLI(R) technology and the just-released Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition processors and X79 chipset-based motherboards.

The combination of NVIDIA SLI technology — which allows for multiple GPUs to run on a single PC — and new X79-based motherboards allow gamers to customize their PC experience with up to four NVIDIA GeForce(R) GTX GPUs, including the GeForce GTX 580 and GTX 570, the world’s fastest DX11 GPUs. Licensed by the world’s leading motherboard manufacturers — including Intel, ASUS, ASRock, EVGA, Foxconn, Gigabyte and MSI, SLI technology is crucial for playing this year’s hottest graphics-intensive games, such as the recently released Battlefield 3 and upcoming Batman: Arkham City with detail, resolution and immersion settings cranked up.

“Falcon’s entire desktop lineup will be moving to Sandy Bridge-E, and NVIDIA SLI technology was an absolute necessity for every model we make,” said Kelt Reeves, president of Falcon Northwest. “It was critical for us to offer our clients multi-GPU options, and pairing Sandy Bridge’s monstrous new CPU horsepower with SLI’s monstrous graphics power will give gamers and enthusiasts smoother frame rates and a better visual experience.”

NVIDIA SLI technology is now available for all consumer-based desktop and mobile PC platforms, including previous versions of Intel Core i7, Core i5, Core i3, Core 2 Quad and Core 2 Duo processors, as well as those based on the AMD Bulldozer and Phenom II CPUs.

NVIDIA DX11 GPUs are designed to deliver the world’s fastest performance for DX11 games, and are the only consumer GPUs to feature multiple tessellation engines for advanced graphics rendering capabilities. NVIDIA GeForce GPUs also provide gamers with additional features not found on any other discrete graphics solutions, such as NVIDIA PhysX(R) technology for deeper gaming immersion, and support for NVIDIA 3D Vision(TM) technology, delivering eye-popping stereoscopic 3D on a single display or spanning across three screens for an immersive gaming environment.

Best graphics cards for the money: february 2011

February 10th, 2011

Detailed graphics card specifications and reviews are great—that is, if you have the time to do the research. But at the end of the day, what a gamer needs is the best graphics card within a certain budget.

So, if you don’t have the time to research the benchmarks, or if you don’t feel confident enough in your ability to pick the right card, then fear not. We at Tom’s Hardware have come to your aid with a simple list of the best gaming cards offered for the money.

February Updates:

There was one major graphics launch last month: Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 560 Ti. In summary, this new card offers the performance of GeForce GTX 470 with the power signature (roughly) of a GeForce GTX 460. It’s based on the new GF114 GPU, which is essentially a re-spun GF104 with all of its 384 CUDA cores enabled, plus 64 texture units and 32 ROPs.

In comparison, the GeForce GTX 460’s GF104 graphics processor had one of its streaming multiprocessors disabled, resulting in cut-back 336 CUDA cores and 56 texture units. The GeForce GTX 560 Ti also sports relatively high 822/1644/1002 MHz core/shader/memory frequencies. The bottom line? At $250, this card offers a great price/performance ratio, just like the GeForce GTX 470, but with lower power usage. This card gets our recommendation out of the gate, and you can read more about it in: Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti Review: GF114 Rises, GF100 Rides Off. On a side note, Nvidia resurrected the premium Ti suffix with this card. We suspect this move was made with an eye to the future, so lesser models based on the same GPU might be designated with a different name (hopefully to avoid confusion, rather than to create more of it).

The same day that Nvidia announced its GeForce GTX 560 Ti, AMD launched a Radeon HD 6950 1 GB to counter it. In testing, we found the 1 GB card is every bit as fast as the pricier 2 GB version. It only gives up performance at quality levels that exceed the 1 GB frame buffer (Metro 2033 with 4xAA and High Quality settings, in our experience). Frankly, that’s a more attractive value play than the 2 GB model. That is, unless you’re interested in trying to soft-mod your 2 GB board into a Radeon HD 6970.

We’ve seen a lot of reported success modding AMD’s Radeon HD 6950 2 GB to a full Radeon HD 6970 2 GB with a BIOS flash. Both of these cards are based on the exact same Cayman GPU, but the Radeon HD 6950 is crippled, with two of its 24 SIMD engines disabled. AMD can choose to purposely handicap its GPUs physically or via firmware. Apparently, the retail Radeon HD 6950s currently available are soft-moddable for the most part, and can be unlocked with a relatively simple BIOS flash.

The real beauty of this is that the 6900-series cards come with a BIOS-backup switch. So, if a flash fails, there’s a way to resurrect the card. Keep in mind that there’s always a chance of damaging your hardware or rendering it unstable with such an update. After all, there’s no guarantee that the disabled SIMDs passed validation to begin with. On top of this, AMD could very well be scrambling to change the way it disables logic on the 2 GB Radeon HD 6950s, and unlocked cards might dry up at retail. There’s certainly no guarantee that the card you buy will be easily modified.

Successful modification results in a card with the full 1536 shader processors and 96 texture units enabled, just like the Radeon HD 6970, although some modified BIOS files out there allow the card to run the 6950’s lower 1250 MHz GDDR5 memory speed.

There have been relatively few price changes, and that’s likely a result of the very crowded (and competitive) mid-range. There’s simply not as much room for prices to shift with fast products in each pertinent segment and few obvious holes left. We have seen a few deals on Newegg that stand out, so we’ll mention them: we found a Palit GeForce 9800 GT for $60, which is about $45 less than other models. And according to its specs, it’s a fully-functional 112-shader card that will outperform a Radeon HD 5670. There’s also a Diamond Radeon HD 5870 for $235, which is very impressive when you consider that this card is notably faster than the Radeon HD 6870 and about as fast as the Radeon HD 6950. The prices of these cards are an anomaly compared to the rest of the playing field, so we can’t give them full recommendations in the list below. As individual values, they’re uncontested, though.

Some Notes About Our Recommendations

A few simple guidelines to keep in mind when reading this list:

This list is for gamers who want to get the most for their money. If you don’t play games, then the cards on this list are more expensive than what you really need. We’ve added a reference page at the end of the column covering integrated graphics processors, which is likely more apropos.
The criteria to get on this list are strictly price/performance. We acknowledge that recommendations for multiple video cards, such as two Radeon cards in CrossFire mode or two GeForce cards in SLI, typically require a motherboard that supports CrossFire or SLI and a chassis with more space to install multiple graphics cards. They also require a beefier power supply compared to what a single card needs, and will almost certainly produce more heat than a single card. Keep these factors in mind when making your purchasing decision. In most cases, if we have recommended a multiple-card solution, we try to recommend a single-card honorable mention at a comparable price point for those who find multi-card setups undesirable.
Prices and availability change on a daily basis. We can’t base our decisions on always-changing pricing information, but we can list some good cards that you probably won’t regret buying at the price ranges we suggest, along with real-time prices from our PriceGrabber engine, for your reference.
The list is based on some of the best U.S. prices from online retailers. In other countries or at retail stores, your mileage will most certainly vary.
These are new card prices. No used or open-box cards are in the list; they might represent a good deal, but it’s outside the scope of what we’re trying to do.

Toylets sega next innovation in gaming hardware

December 18th, 2010

Just when you thought Sega was long gone, out of the gaming hardware business, they rise up to create…umm, a urine-sensing minigame collection? Yup, the same company that brought us the Genesis and Sonic the Hedgehog is working on “Toylets,” a gaming platform placed on top of the nearest urinal stall with the following mini-games as described by Akihabara News:

Manneken Pis, in which the pressure of the stream is directly translated to how much liquid was urinated. Graffiti Eraser, where graffiti on a wall is removed with a hose. The stronger the pressure of your urine, the faster the wall becomes pristine.

The North Wind and Her, in which a horny north wind tries to blow a dress off a girl. The stronger the pressure of your urine, the harder it blows. Milk from Nose, a faux-sumo game in which two characters blow milk out of their noses to push the other out of the ring. The stronger pressure between you and the person that used that urinal before you wins. Yes, it’s a multiplayer game – albeit non-realtime.

No release date is given, but regardless of when it launches, I’m sure it’s safe to say this is one gaming system that will surely never make it out of Japan.

Sony to launch four console games by May

November 13th, 2010

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, responsible for distribution, marketing and sales of PlayStation2, PlayStation3 and PSP (PlayStation Portable) software and hardware, is planning to launch four console games in India by May next year.

“There is a game being developed with characters of Amar Chitra Katha by Gameshastra. Then, you will see two games coming out of Immersive Technologies on Chandragupta Maurya in his early days, called Battle Royal. Another is to figure who can do a better strategy, Porus or the Rani of Jhansi. Besides, there will be a newer version of Street Cricket,” Atrindriya Bose, country manager (PlayStation), Sony Computer Entertainment India, told mediapersons here today.

Sony Computer currently has four partners in India – Hyderabad-based Gameshastra and Immersive, Bangalore-headquartered Candella and Mumbai’s Trine Games. They have so far developed six games, including Hanuman, Desi Adda, World Quiz and Street Cricket in 12 formats for the domestic market.

“India is adept in telling stories which are more contemporary,” Bose said, adding the typical investment in its soon-to-be-launched games would be $2 million (Rs 9 crore) each.

Saying the installed base of consoles in India, together with its competitors like Microsoft’s Xbox and Nitendo, was pegged at a million units, he said the company was expecting sales of 350,000 units of its PS2, PS3 and PSP consoles in the country by the end of this financial year, a 45 per cent jump over last year.

Sony today launched a game titled Street Cricket Champions for PSP and PSP2. Developed by Trine Games, it is priced at Rs 499 for PS2 and Rs 699 for the PSP.

Toshiba p505-s8011 notebook review: fast in playing 3d video games

October 4th, 2010

If you love the smaller products Toshiba Libretto W100 laptop and Toshiba Folio 100 Android tablet PC, let’s give you something different from the same company. The Toshiba P505-S8011 Notebook is a big item (in size).

Though this Toshiba P505-S8011 laptop is no longer on sale in retail shops online and Microsoft’s store, we would like to praise the manufacturers for coming up with a laptop this good. Sales must have been bad, hence the production was discontinued.

Here’s Almario Alcaraz’ Toshiba P505-S8011 Notebook Review: Toshiba is going against the current fad of bringing out smaller and thinner notebooks in the market.

The Japanese company has surprisingly launched the bulky Toshiba P505-S8011. This notebook is gargantuan in the land of midgets.

It features probably one of the largest LCD screens for modern day laptops at 18.4 inches. This notebook first saw action at CES 2010.

Toshiba knows selling the P505-S8011 laptop is not going to be easy but with its retail price of only $1,149.00, I am sure serious gamers and graphic artists will snap this one up.

The price is ridiculously low for such a feature-packed laptop whose only fault is being too heavy and large.

Gamers will love this notebook’s state-of-the-art Intel Core i7-720QM 1.6 Ghz processor and the dedicated 512MB VRAM Nvidia GeForce 310M graphics accelerator.

The P505- P505-S8011’s large display screen and high resolution of 1680 x 945 is perfect for the latest 3D video games. I find it very sweet to learn that this notebook comes equipped with Harman/Kardon stereo speakers with Dolby Surround Room Technology.

Gaming and viewing movies on this notebook is akin to a home theater experience! Just this audio-nirvana feature alone makes this notebook already a good buy in my book.

Toshiba was very generous enough to pack-in 4GB of DDR3 memory to it which should be enough to handle memory-hungry graphics application like the recently-released Adobe Photoshop CS5.

Other notable add-ons are the huge 500GB hard drive and the impressive 12-cell battery which can give you up to 3.5 hours of heavy-usage.

The Toshiba P505-S8011 also ships with pre-installed Windows 7 Home Premium.

This machine can be desktop-workstation replacement for creating graphics and animation or editing videos. The DVD SuperMulti Writer is just perfect for creating multimedia projects.

While it is true that you won’t be able to use this notebook in an airplane seat, just think of the P505-S8011’s other attractive features but a bit high price.

This is a giant with giant-like features and costs $1,149.00. If you can still manage to find a seller of this notebook, we suggest you buy it. It’s a good product.

Video game sales plunged in August

September 10th, 2010

The video game industry last month posted its worst August sales results in four years, according to a new research report.
Adding to the gloom, Nintendo’s Wii, the best selling of the current generation of game consoles, posted its worst sales month ever.
The overall sales numbers were “shockingly low,” said Michael Pachter, a financial analyst who covers the game industry for Wedbush Securities. Total sales for last month were only $5 million higher than the industry posted in August 2006, Pachter noted.
He blamed the poor results on a variety of factors, including the lingering economic slowdown, relatively high prices for game consoles, increased time spent playing the free online multiplayer features of games such as “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2,” and consumer fatigue with the Wii. And none of those factors is likely to change any time soon.
“I think we’re kind of stuck with this the rest of the year,” Pachter said.
U.S. retail sales of game hardware, software and accessories fell 10 percent from the same month last year to $818.9 million, market research firm NPD Group reported Thursday. In the year-to-date, games sales have fallen 8 percent to $8.4 billion. That drop comes on top of last year’s 8 percent full-year decline from the year before.
A plunge in software sales helped bring down the overall numbers. Retailers sold $403.5 million worth of software in August, which was down 14 percent from the same month.
