Ati releases catalyst 10.8 drivers – secrets hidden within

August 28th, 2010

AMD has launched the ATI Catalyst 10.8 WHQL driver suite that brings a few game specific improvements as well as containing some hidden information that reveals more about the companies upcoming product lines.

Hidden within a file in the driver package appears to be a listing of previously unknown codenames for what can only be surmised as the expected Northern Island series of cards; seemingly designated by an “NI” in the title.

The codenames (see photo) include Cayman, Blackcomb, Barts, Whistler, Onega, Turks, Seymour and Caicos and all include different suffixes such as GL XT, GL Pro, GL LE, GL, XT, LP, Gemini and Pro

Causing further confusion is the clear lack of Southern Island codenames, which was rumoured to be AMD’s first step on its way to a full Northern Island release.

CAD market in APAC 2009 2013 discusses trends, drivers, growth inhibitors and a few major vendors in the market

June 11th, 2010

Computer-aided Design (CAD) software uses computers and computing tools to design objects. Such software are used to design architectural, engineering, electronics, roadways etc. These designs may be two dimensional (2D) or three dimensional (3D), as per requirements. The software enables easy viewing of the designed object from different angles; and provides information on materials, tolerances, processes etc. Computer-aided Design software is used majorly for designing objects by manufacturing companies. The software is being used to form digital prototyping in contrast to physical prototyping, as the former saves time and resources. This software is also used to produce special effects through computer animation. Thus, its is being increasingly used by movie makers and advertising professionals.

The Asia Pacific region has lower manufacturing costs and favorable government policies, thus, prompting many global manufacturing units to be set up in the region. This trend has been followed by many global designing houses who have opened operations along with new low cost designing houses in the region. This helped maintain a sustained demand for CAD software in the region during the recent economic recession. Further, with economies improving and increasing buying power, an increased number of companies are set to invest in CAD solutions, which are likely to provide them sustainable business advantage and increased profitability.

Despite the recent economic downturn, the Asia-Pacific (APAC) manufacturing market has been growing steadily. Many global companies are investing in the region due to the advantages it offers and the growth potential it holds.

Further, CAD software prices in the Asia Pacific have decreased significantly in the recent times. Many low cost designing houses have come up in the region, increasing competition, and prompting global players to decrease their software price to sustain market share. Further, companies have even made free availability of 2D CAD software to capture market share and fight against growing piracy in the region. Additionally, the computer hardware prices has dropped significantly in this region owing to growing number of hardware companies and low cost skilled labor in countries like China, Taiwan and India.

This report by TechNavio Insights highlights scope of the CAD market in APAC. Further it discusses trends, drivers, growth inhibitors and a few major vendors in the market.

Find drivers for your hard drive

June 5th, 2010

QUESTION I backed up my Windows XP PC to a portable hard drive. This drive appears in Device Manager and Disk Management, but not in My Computer. My Creative sound system failed at the same time.

The Hardware Wizard was unable to locate new drivers for the hard drive, USB ports or sound entries in Device Manager. Ken Robinson

HELPROOM ANSWER Start by updating the Bios and motherboard drivers, a process that can often fix bugs and even add extra features. The motherboard manufacturer’s website will offer any new versions.

It’s possible that Windows is trying to allocate a drive letter that’s already in use to your external drive. Plug in the drive, then click Start, Run and enter compmgmt.msc.

Click Disk Management, then right-click the USB drive and choose ‘Change Drive Letter and Paths’. Click Change, then click on the ‘Assign the following drive letter’ drop-down menu. Choose a drive letter you’re sure is not in use. Click Ok, Yes, then reboot the PC.

If you’re still experiencing problems, your USB ports may be malfunctioning or not getting enough power.

Automatically download the latest intel drivers to maximize computer performance

June 5th, 2010

Drivers are little pieces of software that tell your computer’s operating system (ie: Windows) how to interact with your computer’s hardware (ie: a wireless networking card). Updates to the drivers that your computer uses are often released and generally aim to improve performance. Keeping your drivers up to date is a great way to keep your computer running in tip-top shape, the only issue is that the process can sometimes be complicated.

Luckily, you can automatically check for the latest Intel drivers right from Intel’s support website, and I’m here to show you how to find and install an update.

1. First, we should identify if your computer uses Intel hardware. Intel is the world’s largest semiconductor chip maker, there is a high likelihood that your computer is using some piece of Intel hardware. The easiest way to tell is by looking at the stickers that came on your computer. Look for Intel stickers similar to these:

You can also right click on My Computer and choose properties to see what processor your computer has.

1. Once you’ve identified that your computer uses some Intel hardware, go to Intel’s support website.

2. On the “Top Support Resources” banner, find the “Automatically detect and update drivers and software” link.

3. On the next page click the “Check your system for the latest updates” button.

4. You will be prompted to allow the Java application to run, press “run” to allow Intel to scan your computer for drivers that need updating.

5.Next you will see a list of Intel hardware, and if there are new drivers available for download, you’ll find a button that says “download now”. 6. You may be prompted by your browser to download the file, click “accept” or “ok” in order to download it.

If you are using Chrome or Firefox, you should be able to launch the download from within your browser, if you are using Internet Explorer, you should have selected a location to save the file when prompted to download it. Navigate to the file and launch it.

7. Follow the install wizard’s prompts and leave the default options unchanged.

8. You may be asked to restart your computer for the changes to take effect (if you have multiple driver updates to install, you can opt to not restart when prompted, and instead install of the updates before doing a restart)

That’s it. You’re drivers are now up to date and your computer should be running at peak performance.
