Electronics & computer hardware are the best-selling online products

August 10th, 2011

One encouraging sign for a country recovering from a recession is when consumers start snapping up products again. Though the U.S. is not out of the woods yet, a new report provides some happy news for at least one aspect of the economy. People are buying gadgets, tablets and computer software in droves according to a new report. Formerly atypical cyber shopping continues to expand and turn profits for e-commerce businesses.

Research firm comScore divulged U.S. residents spent over $37 billion online in the second quarter of 2011 – a 14 percent increase from last year. The figure also marks nearly a year of positive growth for the e-commerce retail industry, said the group. Prior to the 2009 holiday season, cyber sales slumped.

Gian Fulgoni, comScore chairman, believes this is a sign of things to come for online retailers.

“It’s clear that consumers are continuing to shift to the online channel, with almost $1 in every $10 of discretionary spending now occurring online,” said Fulgoni. He posited that “convenience and lower prices” remain key draws for discerning consumers.

Consumer electronics, computer hardware and computer software (in that order) topped the report as the three best-selling categories among online buyers. The bulk of spending was done at popular sites such as Amazon. Indeed, comScore revealed just 25 retail sites garnered around 66 percent of total online spending. The increase is believed to be the result of a boost in the number of online consumers, which is estimated to have grown 16 percent.

Fulgoni was hesitant to claim this as an overall victory, however.

“With economic growth remaining soft, the unemployment rate stubbornly high and financial markets in turmoil, consumers are less optimistic today than they have been in preceding quarters, which raises concerns for the future,” he said. “We believe the third quarter will be an important indicator of which direction this economy is really headed and what that will mean for consumer spending.” (via Home Media Magazine)

[REVIEW] Itwin, a new remote file access USB Device

August 8th, 2011

Introduction
The iTwin was developed by iTwin Inc., headquarter located in Singapore with a department in the USA. Their product won the German Red Dot design award 2011 for most innovative design. The description of the product as mentioned by the Red Dot organization:
“iTwin facilitates data transfer and access between two computers connected to the Internet. The two identically designed parts of the device are plugged into the respective USB port of each computer. This permits files and folders to be exchanged independently from the location of the two computers, also allowing for reciprocal data processing from each of the devices.
The 256-bit AES encryption guarantees a secure connection. The housing is made of recyclable aluminum and carries a logo inspired by Michelangelo’s “The Creation of Adam”. Its similarity to a USB stick conveys a high recognition value and promises easy operation. The unit occupies minimal space and can be carried along anywhere. For transport, the two elements are interlockable.”
As mentioned above, the iTwin requires both computers to have access to a broadband wired/wireless Internet connection. Do note that this product (currently) only works on Windows systems, respectively XP, Vista and 7. Both computers must be online (as in: connected to broadband internet, the PC itself can be in sleep mode to save power).
Things I liked
When extensively testing this unit, I must admit the installation of the product is easy like ABC. You just plug it into your PC/Notebook and the installer will pop up to register your account at iTwin.com (recommended, since you really want to be able to deactivate the product in case one of both sides gets stolen or missing. After registration the first time you plug it in, the 2 devices will be paired and can be used to share data from the one to the other and reversed. Just plug the other side into any other Windows PC and install the small application that will pop up, you get 2 folders: Local and Remote, just drag the files to whatever location you wish.
Local: The folder used for both making files available to the remote client, or for the remote client to send it’s files to your local disk.
Remote: The folder used for either transferring your data directly to the physical disk of the remote PC, or for you to search which files the remote pc has shared for you to browse through and transfer.
Further, the way it encrypts its data transfer with a robust AES-256 algorithm is really impressive. Unlike software encryption over VPN, I discovered the iTwin hardware performing better timings than moving the same files the old way (via software driven encryption). The units can be password protected too, so in case of stolen it will render itself fairly useless for the culprit.
Troubles in China
For test purposes I gave out one side of the iTwin dongle to a family member who was going to visit China. Before he left I explained how it works, and made him preinstall everything on his notebook. All good in the Belgian based HQ, connections were great and transfer speeds were terrific.
But… when he arrived in China in his hotel he tried to connect to the pc running the other side of the iTwin. Without success.
Unlike the notebook, which could make a direct connection when accessing the wireless Internet in his hotel room located in HangZhou, the iTwin dongle failed to connect to the PC running in Belgium. VPN services over software clients did work, but the hardware dongle itself could not connect.
Notice: He did tell us the iTwin asked to reinstall the software after it detected changes in proxy, an action he did not perform because he didn’t want to get any issues with the hotel’s Internet policies.
Probably the device can reconnect to the other PC when you reinstall the software and thus reinitialize the proxy setting, but this issue came slightly unexpected since the notebook in China got perfect internet access.
Should I get one or not?
Although this product is really inventive, I have doubts on recommending it to everybody out there. It depends a lot on your personal computer experience. I will break it down into 2 categories:
A) You are an average computer user, mainly using your PC to browse the web, play games, read your emails, edit some photos and office files?
B) You are a Tech geek or network admin who knows what VPN is and does; you have experience with hardware (though not essentially necessary) and know the basics of networking and networking.
If you are an ‘A’, I would recommend you buying this product. It is the easiest way to get 2 Windows computers to connect and share files, even performing a remote backup. No hardware or software knowledge about VPN is required, just plug it in and it will work out of the box!
Are you the ‘B’ side? Well, don’t get too excited about this dongle. Software based VPN can be set up for free (if you know how to) and has many more options you can alter and test with. Obviously the manual way will require you spending some time on testing and searching for the proper settings to make things connect. So if you’re a B, it all depends on how many machines you wish to access your shared resources. The iTwin is a one-to-one connection with the ease of use of plug & play, manual VPN has the advantage of multi-to-multi, yet the disadvantage it takes more time and skill to set it up.
In the end it is a great product, it’s protected with one of world’s most secure encryption algorithms, has superb ease of use, and all that for just 99€/$. You decide.

Pano Logic Inc. zeros in on reduced computer hardware

August 8th, 2011

CEO John Kish has a big goal for his workstation company: make computer hardware completely irrelevant. Pano Logic offers a computer workstation that eschews most of the components one would expect a computer to need — there’s no central processing unit, no memory, no hard drive, no real graphics card, just a network connection and software running seamlessly on servers in the cloud.
As a result, it uses just 5 watts of power compared to 300 watts for a typical computer, and because everything is stored centrally on a server rather than on hundreds of individual workstations, …

New Computer Hardware Prototyping Board Designed in Crete Successfully Tested

August 8th, 2011

A new computer hardware prototyping board, designed in Crete, has been successfully tested. Sixty four copies of it are currently being built, to be subsequently interconnected to each other, in order to make a prototype of a future architecture — a half-a-thousand-processor parallel “manycore” computer. The board, called Formic, is of general interest: it is a low-cost prototyping platform that features eight high-speed communication links — quite more than what one finds on other similar-cost boards.

Modern computer architecture prepares the manycore chips of the future, so that hundreds of processors can harmoniously cooperate at high speed, minimizing the latency and cost of their communication and synchronization. This is necessary for harnessing the performance potential of future computer chips, which will only be feasible through parallel processing with minimized overheads. To be able to develop such complicated future computer architectures, prototyping is essential.
Field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA’s) have long been used to prototype new and exciting architectures. However, commercially available FPGA boards provide very limited communication connectivity –just a few high-speed serial links, at the price level around 1 K Euro; to get a few tens of links, one has to pay several thousand Euros and use bulky boards and bulky coaxial connectors.
To address this problem, in Crete, Greece, we designed our own low cost, high connectivity FPGA board. Here, at the Foundation for Research & Technology — Hellas (FORTH), Institute of Computer Science (ICS), in Heraklion, we call this board “Formic.” Alpha-stage testing, performed in May, showed that the Formic design is fully functional and correct in its first version; we are now building 64 copies of it.
As shown in the photograph, Formic is a small board –just 10 cm on each side. It has eight (8) high-speed serial links available for external connections; each of them delivers 2.5 Gbits/s per direction, through convenient and inexpensive SATA connectors and cables. At the center of the board, under a passive cooler, is a large but low-cost Xilinx Spartan-6 LX150T FPGA. Around it, there is one DRAM chip (128 MBytes, DDR2, 400 MHz), and three (3) SRAM chips (1 MByte, ZBT, 167 MHz each). The board also contains power converters/regulators, crystal oscillators, a Xilinx Flash memory for FPGA configuration, a JTAG chain, and an RS-232 port for debugging. At peak memory and serial link activity, the board consumes 8 Watts. The PCB has 10 layers of half-ounce copper, separated by FR-4; the smallest holes are 0.3mm in diameter, and the smallest tracks are 5 mils (0.12mm); it was manufactured by Pan Technical, and assembled by Prisma –two Greek companies. The cost is below one thousand Euro per board.
We configure the FPGA on each board to contain eight (8) microBlaze processors, with their private L1 caches; also, the tags of the private L2 caches are in the FPGA, while their data are in the SRAM chips. The FPGA also contains per-cache DMA/prefetch engines, the 5-channel DRAM controller, and the 8 link interfaces, all connected via a 22-port crossbar. The hardware provides no coherence among the caches, but the runtime software will, at task boundaries.
Our next step, in the Computer Architecture and VLSI Systems (CARV) Laboratory of FORTH-ICS, is now to have 64 Formic boards built for us, to interconnect them in a 3D mesh using their serial links, and to also connect them to the eight A9 cortex processors in two ARM chips. The resulting heterogeneous manycore prototype will contain 520 processors: 512 “worker” cores, which will be executing application tasks, and 8 “control & scheduler” cores, executing the runtime system.
The first use of this 520-processor prototype will be to execute applications written in the OMP-SS programming model, where the programmer identifies tasks and all their I/O arguments, while the runtime software undertakes their parallelization. This work is performed in the context of the ENCORE project, funded by the European Union (FP7 STREP). In addition to this funding, ARM has provided the A9 cortex development systems, and Xilinx has donnated the 64 FPGA chips.
