Acer Aspire One D270 Netbook Pops Up for Pre-Order

February 13th, 2012

Remember netbooks? If you haven’t already been bitten by the Ultrabook bug and don’t want to spend upwards of $700 on a higher end machine, next-generation netbooks built around Intel’s Cedar Trail platform are finally starting to trickle out. Acer was one of the biggest players during the netbook’s original run, and the company’s all-new Aspire One D270 is now available for pre-order.

Starting at $280, Acer’s Aspire One D270 is a 10.1-inch netbook featuring an Intel Atom N2600 processor clocked at 1.6GHz, 1GB of RAM, 320GB hard drive (5400 RPM), Intel GMA 3600 graphics, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, GbE LAN, 0.3MP webcam, HDMI output, three USB 2.0 ports, Windows 7 Starter, and a 6-cell battery good for up to 8 hours of battery life.

That’s not a bad setup for the money, and while it’s not as sleek or slim as an Ultrabook, at just 2.87 pounds, the D270 hardly tips the scales. As for color options, the D270 is available in Seashell White, Aquamarine, Express Black, and Burgundy Red.

Acer Aspire AOD260 Wireless Broadband Netbook

January 25th, 2011

Netbooks are on-the-go machines built to accomplish basic computing tasks without weighing your bag down. Since surfing the net is one of the primary use of such PCs, all of them come embedded with a Wi-fi chip. In some countries, there have been a handful of models that have been sold with 3G adapters built-in. But most of these didn’t really make their way into India, obviously as the country is just waking up to the 3G revolution this year. But this is GSM 3G we’re talking of, while CDMA’s competitive 3G technology (dubbed EV-DO) has been around in India for some time, providing users with theoretical speeds of up to 3.1 Mbps.

We’d tested the Olive Zipbook, a Netbook that had an EV-DO based wireless modem built-in. Although it was a pioneering attempt in the country, the device lacked the basic deliverables that are expected from a Netbook.

Today, we have the Acer AOD260 – a variant of the “Aspire One” series Netbook from the company, with a 3G EV-DO modem built-in. So, does the AOD260 finally pull off the characteristics of a netbook without the need to have a stick-like object poking out of its USB port? Read on to find out.

Design and Build

The Acer Aspire AOD260 is very similar in design to its Gateway counterpart, the LT23. The glossy black top with the “Aspire One” logo is striking, and oddly enough, the same glossy part is even fitted at the base of the laptop. The AOD260 is pretty thin and light compared to the current iteration of Netbooks; anything smaller than this is going to burn a hole in your pocket. The build quality is also pretty good as the AOD260 does not creak or flex to the point of concern.

Acer Aspire One D255 with dual-core Atom hits at $330

Acer Aspire One D255 with dual-core Atom hits at $330
By Joanna Stern posted Oct 4th 2010 12:01AM
It was only a matter of time before Acer let out the pricing / availability details on its dual-core Atom netbook, and as we could have predicted, the Taiwanese company’s smacked an extremely enticing pricetag on this one. Ringing up at an aggressive $329.99, the 2.2-pound D255 looks almost identical to the D260 — yes, even those with the worst of cataracts could tell it’s an Aspire One from afar — but in terms of specs it’s got that notable difference of a brand new dual-core Atom N550 processor.

But not to worry, even though it’s now the cheapest dual-core netbook around, it’s still got the netbook standards — including 1GB of RAM, 250GB hard drive and six-cell battery. The single-core version will go for $269.99, but we do have to say that shelling out that additional $50 for that extra core does buy you slightly faster performance (see our HP Mini 5103 review for some Atom N550 performance results). Sounds mighty tempting to us, but it still doesn’t make us forget about that Chrome OS netbook Acer’s been promising.

Acer Aspire Revo AR3700 announced at nigh affordable price point

October 1st, 2010

Acer just announced its Aspire Revo AR3700 Stateside, and it is nice to see the nettop hit the market via a pre-order state on Amazon.com as well as Newegg.com, retailing for less than $350. That’s pretty pocket friendly, and it ought to be good enough for most folks who want an ordinary computing machine without breaking the bank. After all, its performance shouldn’t be too shabby with an Intel dual core Atom D525 processor aided by Nvidia ION 2 graphics, 2GB RAM, a 250GB hard drive, Gigabit LAN, Wi-Fi connectivity and Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit as the operating system of choice. It does seem as though a VESA mount has been thrown into the mix, which would make this to be a decent candidate for a HTPC in your living room if the need arises.

Acer says Netbooks will not die

September 30th, 2010

Acer president Scott Lin said that despite pessemistic statements to the contrary, the netbooks category will not die.

At a press conference in Taiwan, Lin had been asked about PC makers shifting towards tablet PCs and away from netbooks according to the Digitimes. Lin forecast that global netbook shipments for 2010 will be around 40 million units, around 20 per cent of the entire notebook market.

Lin didn’t go far as to say that growth could be expected in the decline category, instead saying that 2011 will remain around the same level Acer and fellow Taiwanese manufacturer Asus would have more of the market to themselves following the withdrawal of Dell and HP.

Pinning hopes on Intel’s new Atom N550 CPU offering better performance at the same price, Lin said that the price to performance ratio for netbooks based on Intel’s revamped Atom CPus would be attractive to consumers.

Acer aksi saud they expect to sell 2 million smartphones in 2011 and set an aggressive goal to more than double their smartphone shipments to 4 or 5 million in 2011.
