Unsure if you’ve noticed, but Ultrabooks have been looking mighty sharp of late. With vendor after vendor aiming for an ever-tighter, slimmer piece of the notebook pie, Acer has outdone itself with the new TravelMate P243 series. It’s actually designed for small businesses, but there’s nothing here stopping the average consumer from digging in.

Aside from clean, classic good looks and an all-black frame, it’ll be powered by Intel’s 3rd-gen Core processors with Turbo Boost technology.

The new line is available with NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M graphics, enabling DirectX 11 support. It’ll also ship with Acer ProShield Security, a suite of security and manageability tools integrated in a unified user interface.

Acer Adds 24-inch IPS Commercial Display

May 1st, 2012

Acer introduced a new 24-inch commercial display with premium IPS technology, the Acer B243PWL. This ergonomic display offers wide viewing angles up to 178 degrees horizontally and vertically. The LED-backlit monitor offers a resolution of 1920 x 1200 and a 60Hz refresh rate. Connectivity options include DisplayPort, VGA, and DVI (w/HDCP). The Acer B243PWL is EPEAT Gold registered. The B243PWL also offers a 100,000,000:1 contrast ratio and a brightness of 300 nits. The display is available for about $329.

Acer America today has unveiled the Acer B243PWL, a new 24-inch ergonomic display with premium IPS technology, which provides excellent wide angle viewing and color saturation. It’s designed to meet the needs of business, education and government customers who require first-rate color reproduction.

Leveraging an IPS panel, the Acer B243PWL delivers uniform color temperature at nearly every point for consistent images even when the screen is viewed 60 degrees from the center – up to 178 degrees horizontally and vertically – making it ideal for swiveling and pivoting and multi-monitor set-ups.

Offering exceptional connectivity, the Acer B243PWL comes with DisplayPort™ in addition to VGA and DVI (w/HDCP). DisplayPort provides both true digital images and crystal clear audio via one small cable, which saves space and provides a clean look and feel. DisplayPort works with the computer or projector without resorting to artifact inducing encoding. It delivers every pixel to the screen as rendered by the PC with the highest accuracy and fastest response required to support the B243PWL’s high resolution, refresh rate and color depth.

“We’re pleased to offer our commercial customers a premium IPS display, which provides the image caliber necessary for photo editing, digital video creation and media-rich presentation development,” said Chris White, senior director of product marketing, Acer America. “Not only does it produce superior picture quality, but its low power consumption provides a low total cost of ownership.”

EPEAT Gold® registered, the highest caliber of EPEAT certification available, the display meets all of EPEAT’s environmental measures and at least 75 percent of EPEAT’s optional criteria. The display is constructed of mercury-free materials and uses mostly recyclable packaging materials, reducing its environmental impact. It’s also LED-backlit, which reduces energy costs by consuming up to 68 percent less power than standard CCFL-backlit displays. TCO certified, the B243PWL adheres to strict environmental, performance and ergonomic design standards. Displays bearing the TCO label deliver excellent picture quality, consume less energy and use minimal hazardous substances.

The high 1920 x 1200 WUXGA resolution and 60Hz refresh rate make the B243PWL perfect for advanced 1080p Full HD widescreen multimedia and productivity applications. With an impressive 100,000,000:1 contrast ratio and a brightness of 300 nits, it combines the brightest whites and the deepest blacks with a significant improvement of gradation and detail, especially in dim or bright scenes. Outfitted with the Acer eColor Management tool, users can optimize image performance under different viewing scenarios at the touch of a button.

The ergonomic design optimizes the viewing position for maximum comfort even during prolonged use. The panel can be conveniently rotated for viewing of images in either portrait or landscape mode. Highly flexible, it can also be swiveled 35 degrees to the left and right and tilted from 15 inches up or 5 inches down, while the height is adjustable from 4 inches up or down. It also includes two built-in speakers and a USB hub.

Like all Acer monitors, the Acer B243PWL Kbmdrz features a standard three-year warranty.(1) The display is available now via Acer’s authorized resellers in the U.S. with prices beginning at $329.

Acer Dethrones HP to Become No. 1 Desktop Maker in India

March 15th, 2012

Despite experiencing macro-economic challenges in 2011 due to component shortage and fierce price wars among global vendors, Taiwan-based computer manufacturer Acer Inc successfully claimed the number one position in the desktop category in India during the year.

According to data from market research firm IDC, Acer clinched the top spot from Hewlett-Packard, the U.S. hardware giant, with a market share of 13.2 percent in the last quarter of 2011. Indian firm HCL Infosystems stood second with a market share of around 8 percent.

As per IDC data, Acer managed to top the sales chart in the desktop category for nine months in 2011. Though the company tripped down to the second spot during the July-September quarter, it successfully recovered during the last three months of the year.

However, when it comes to the overall PC market in India, including laptops and other mobile computing devices like tablets, it was Dell which outdid others. Acer was at the fourth slot in the list.

According to S Rajendran, Acer’s chief marketing officer, large orders the company got from the government was one of the reasons for its increasing sales in the country.

On the other hand, factors that affected HP’s performance not only in India but also in global markets were its repeated top-level management changes and recent announcements regarding plans to split off its PC business.

HP’s decision to replace its chief executive Leo Apotheker with former eBay chief Meg Whitman made customers cagey, allowing its rivals such as Acer to take the opportunity to gain market share, the Times of India reported.

Though consumers today increasingly prefer mobile computing devices to traditional PCs, India is still considered as profitable market for desktop computers. According to analysts, the country, with a PC-penetration of only about 8 percent, is still in the early stage of computer adoption. Therefore, there is a huge opportunity for multi-national computer manufacturers like Dell, HP, Lenovo and Acer to drive their profit margins up, the report says.

Acer pips HP; becomes No. 1 in local desktop sales

March 15th, 2012

Taiwanese computer maker Acer Inc has emerged as the number one desktop seller in India during 2011, after seeing some ups and downs during the year that was marked by component shortage and aggressive price wars among multinational vendors.

With a 13.2% market share in the last quarter of 2011, as per data from market researcher IDC, Acer wrested the top spot from Hewlett-Packard, the US hardware giant that is still reeling under the impact of repeated top-level management changes, that is affecting its performance not just in India but elsewhere as well.

In the desktop space, Indian firm HCL Infosystems had the second spot after Acer, with a market share of around 8%. During 2011, Acer topped sales in the desktop category for nine months but slipped to the number two slot during the July-September quarter, only to bounce back during the last three months of the year. However, in the overall PC market in India that includes laptops and other mobile computing devices such as tablets, Dell is the leading vendor, with Acer at the number four slot.

Large orders from the government was one of the factors that helped Acer increase its sales volumes in the country, according to its chief marketing officer S Rajendran. HP’s recent announcements about plans to hive off its PC business as well as its decision to replace its chief executive Leo Apotheker with former eBay chief Meg Whitman made customers wary, giving competitors such as Acer an opportunity to use the moment of weakness to gain market share.

Another significant factor that helped Acer is the inability of unbranded or assembled PC sellers to cope with the price fluctuations during the year. Following floods in Thailand, one of the global harddisk manufacturing hubs, the price of the storage device soared literally pushing it out of reach for most informal players.

With a PC-penetration of only about 8%, India is still considered a virgin market with a lot of headroom to grow even as desktop market has been shrinking in most developed markets such as North America and Europe, where consumers are migrating to mobile computing devices such as laptop, netbook or even tablet devices.

Last week, while launching the latest iteration of Apple’s tablet computer iPad, the firm’s chief executive Tim Cook claimed that Apple sold more number of iPads than desktops sold by any PC maker, signaling a clear change in preference among consumers.

India, however, analysts say is still fairly early in the stage of computer adoption and hence presents a huge opportunity for multi-national computer makers such as Dell, HP, Lenovo and Acer.

Home-grown hardware firms such as HCL Infosystems and Wipro have also been competing with the transnational firms for a share of the pie. In the latter half of the year, PC sales in India had been impacted by component shortage and price fluctuations.

According to data available from Gartner, overall PC market in India recorded its lowest shipments in the last six quarters during the last three months of 2011, primarily due to supply shortage and ensuing fluctuations in hard disk price. During the October to December period, 2.39 million 3D printers units was sold in India.

Acer personalises the cloud

February 22nd, 2012

Computer manufacturer, Acer is set to roll out a free service, called AcerCloud, that enables users to share and store multimedia files from their personal devices to a central repository in the cloud.

AcerCloud uses Acer Always Connect technology that lets users retrieve multimedia and data files anytime, even when their main PC is in sleep mode.

The service will be available on all new Acer consumer PCs in the second quarter of 2012. It will support all Android devices, while future support is planned for Windows-based devices.

It lets users take photos on a smartphone, and then view them on a main PC at home or in the office, without the delay of manually transferring files. It also allows users to purchase a movie from a PC, and then watch it on a tablet or smartphone.

Leslie Smyth, Acer retail channel manager, says Acer designed AcerCloud to appeal to what it calls the ‘new age consumer’, who uses multiple smart devices that don’t work together. He says the service makes it easier for users to move, store and back up content across multiple devices.

Smyth explains that uptake of digital convergence has been relatively slow in SA in comparison with European markets, but he believes cloud computing will change that, particularly in the education sector.

He explains: “For students, it’s a lot easier for them to get to their research, do assignments, post them in their ‘cloud box’; [lecturers] can mark their exams, and students can access their assignments later and look at reviews. We feel education is going to be the biggest cloud drive to get all the information [students] need that’s at hand. And if any of their devices get lost, it will still be secure.”

He adds that mobile device proliferation in SA is another key driver of cloud computing. “There are more than 600 million cellphone users in Africa, and a lot of those cellphones are not smartphones. As infrastructure develops and as the costs are driven down in terms of data and connection, we will see a content explosion in the African market and cloud computing will play a big role in that, too.”

Smyth says Acer will not be charging consumers to use AcerCloud, but they will need to use an Acer product to drive the service.

AcerCloud is not only targeted at consumers, but at business users as well, he adds. Mobile workers can update sales documents on a PC, and the documents will be put into their personal cloud and streamed to other devices.

He says: “It will make business more productive and create more paperless environments, and encourage information and content sharing. If any of the hardware goes missing, all of that critical information is stored.”

According to the company, the files will be temporarily accessible for 30 days in the personal cloud and on the devices, or users can choose to download the files onto other devices for long-term storage.
