Iphone 4g hardware configuration leaked by foxconn

June 7th, 2010

Chinese technology sites have published what seems to be the hardware configuration of Apple’s newest version of the iPhone.
According to the sites that revealed the news, the new iPhone will have a new generation of touch display, a professional IPS / FSS LCD screen with a resolution of 960 x 640 pixels (the actual iPhone models have a resolution of 320×480 pixels) that will be much thinner (about 33% thinner), allowing a much longer battery life, and a much more improved screen display that will improve the user experience.

Battery life will also be improved by the 19% larger battery that will be included in the new version of iPhone. Also, the device’s performance will be improved by the 512 megabytes of Samsung memory used in order to make the device work smoother.
Other sources say that the new iPhone 4G will have a new camera with HD recording capability and flash (not Adobe Flash), a frontal camera that will allow video conferencing and probably over 32Gb of storage space.

The source at Foxconn said that the company is going to manufacture 24 million units of the next generation iPhone. The hardware configuration is not confirmed – how could it be only hours before Steve Jobs’ keynote at the WWDC 2010 – but the source cited by the Chinese websites seems to be one that can be trusted, being a high official of Foxconn.

IPhone 4G Is video chat finally fit for business.

June 5th, 2010

Apple is expected to announce its fourth-generation iPhone hardware on Monday that will include a forward-facing camera that can be used for video chat, allowing real-time wireless videoconferencing.

The expectation for video chat is based on two prototypes of the next-generation iPhone, including one found in a bar and reviewed by Gizmodo that included a new forward-facing camera as well as the rear-facing one used for taking snapshots.

With news about iPhone hardware and its new mobile operating system (iPhone OS 4) expected Monday at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), it’s possible that software enabling video chat could also be announced. While just about anything Apple introduces seems to catch on with consumers and even business customers, will video chat also prove popular?

Several analysts were dubious about the value of video chat for business for many reasons, including what they called the “ugly” factor. However, they conceded there might be a sweet spot for the techonology among young consumers.

The ugly factor refers to a worker’s appearance during a spur of the moment video chat with a client or a boss whom a worker is trying to impress. A boss seeing an employee with hair tussled and wearing a T-shirt could give an unprofessional impression that would be enough to make video chat unappealing for most workplaces.

Some workers are accustomed to videoconferencing from a desktop computer while working at home, but making videoconferencing mobile and on a small screen could lead to more casual and even reckless uses, with workers talking while driving or rushing to a plane, they said.

Given such negative examples, several analysts questioned what the business value of video chat could be.

“Seeing [another worker's] face in real time does not really add that much to the level of productivity over just hearing a voice and perhaps sharing a document people are working on,” said Jack Gold, an analyst at J. Gold Associates.

However, Ezra Gottheil, an analyst at Technology Business Research, disagreed. “Seeing someone’s face increases the communications bandwidth and the data bandwidth, too,” he said. “You know whether you’re being listened to and understood. You form a stronger relationship. It’s not like being there, but it’s a lot better than just voice.”

Gottheil said his consulting organisation is looking into inexpensive videoconferencing technology for doing presentations. “We want to be better known by our clients. That’s what will drive video chat into the enterprise: salespeople using the phone will insist on it and not for cold calling. That’s too intrusive. But once a relationship starts to form, you want to strengthen it.”

But another naysayer, Kevin Burden of ABI Research concluded, “for the most part, most people will say no to video chat”. Burden noted that video phone calls from desk phones and expensive executive desktop computers and monitors have never taken off after years of attempts.

“You could say things are different now, and some will say it’s possibly the right time for video chat, since I get to see nonverbal cues. But I could also get to see my boss get angry, which is why I might not want to use it,” Burden said.

The predominant philosophy that “Apple can do whatever it wants” might not apply to video chat on the iPhone, Burden reasoned. “Even though Apple has got a way of taking apps people only think they want and making them work, I don’t think video chat will be one of them.”

Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney said many businesses will find that still photographs, rather than stored video and video chat, are all they need. “And photos are a lot easier to store and move around wirelessly.

Android 2.2 froyo not the champion wait for iPhone 4G, OS 4.0

May 23rd, 2010

Ever since the debut of Android 2.2 Froyo, everyone has been jumping up and down over how amazing Google is as mobile OS innovator, and how Apple is playing catch up with its iPhone. Combine Froyo with the Nexus One or the just announced Droid Incredible, and it beats the iPhone 3GS hands down on iPhone OS 3.0. If you believe that, you’re dead wrong.

Look, Google introduced a brand new OS a few days ago on the latest mobile hardware that you can purchase. Apple, on the contrary, is having to defend itself on a device that’s a year old. The same applies to their OS 3.0. You tell me, how is that comparison valid?

Before you accuse me of being an Apple fanboy, doesn’t it make sense to let Apple introduce the iPhone 4G with OS 4.0 to see where both platforms stack up against each other in the coming weeks? Would giving Apple a few more weeks really make a difference if we’re trying to crown the champion for the next year?

Google has a lot of good things going for it. The company is going nuts over introducing new iterations of its mobile OS as its hardware partners push the bar on new devices, while Apple takes a year to make a slew of announcements. We’ll give Google credit for quickly innovating. However, all we’re saying is, if you’re really going to crown Google the champion, at least compare it to the technology that’s right around the corner. It makes Android users look like sore losers who are looking to validate how amazing their open OS when they refuse to wait for the latest that Apple has to offer.

Give it until the end of June, and then we can start comparing the two platforms fairly.

Pictures of iphone 4g with white front panel surface

May 23rd, 2010

Alleged photos of a next-generation iPhone partially assembled with a white front panel have surfaced online, further suggesting that Apple will offer two colors of its redesigned handset.

The Taiwanese website Apple.pro posted pictures of both a black redesigned iPhone, as seen in numerous leaks, next to a new white model, with the color taking up the entire front panel and home button. The front panel is identical to a leaked part that was revealed online last week.

The pictures show the white panel loosely resting atop the rest of the iPhone, with the home button recessed, suggesting that the website simply placed the component on top of the rest of the obtained part to show what a white iPhone 4G could look like. Previously, the same website had shown pictures of the white panel separate from the rest of the phone.

The white panel has a hole for a forward-facing camera, identical to the components found in assembled prototypes that have been publicly disassembled and photographed. But those prototypes showed the device black front and pack panels.

Apple first began to offer color options with the iPhone 3G in 2008 with the second-generation version of the hardware. Apple gave the iPhone a polished, plastic back, available in shiny black for the 8GB and 16GB models, and offered a polished white option for the 16GB model only. But both the black and white models retained the black front panel surrounding the handset’s multitouch LCD screen, while the new part suggests Apple could bring the color to the front side of the device.

Sprint and 4G

May 20th, 2010

At long last, it appears that 2010 is the year of 4G. Or at least that’s what Sprint is hoping for, as it begins to roll out on June 4th the country’s first ever 4G phone, the HTC Evo 4G. By most accounts, the phone looks amazing. It promises a 4.3-inch TFT display, a front-facing camera, an 8-megapixel camera on the back, a 1 Ghz Snapdragon processor, Android 2.1 and so much more.

But let’s step back for a second and redefine what 4G means in this case. Sprint’s 4G technology is called WiMax, and it stand for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access. It has close ties to current Wi-Fi technology and is based on a 802.16e wireless standard. WiMax offers a theoretical download speed of up to 10 Mbps and peak upload speeds of 1 Mbps, though Sprint says that average download speeds will be more like 3 to 6 Mbps.

Sprint is the only carrier pursuing WiMax as a 4G technology. The other three — AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile — are going the LTE route. That stands for Long-Term Evolution, and it has a slightly different architecture than WiMax. Existing WiMax hardware would be incompatible with LTE. However, Sprint’s CEO Dan Hesse has said that if LTE turns out to be the standard in the future, Sprint would be open to changing over to LTE (Unlike GSM/CDMA, the differences between LTE and WiMax are not that vast). The reason Sprint has been so aggressive with WiMax instead of LTE is because the company has already acquired a lot of the spectrum with their acquisition of ClearWire a few years ago. For more on 4G technology, you can read our quick primer on the subject.

Another benefit of WiMax on the HTC Evo 4G is that, finally, you’ll be able to use voice and data simultaneously on Sprint. Unlike GSM, CDMA technology does not have the ability to run voice and data simultaneously — it would have to be one or the other. Since WiMax is not tied to CDMA, Sprint is now able to transmit voice over the 1xRTT network at the same time as data is transmitted.
Now let’s talk about the pricing plan of that is required with the HTC Evo 4G. The cheapest plan you can get with it is the $69.99 Everything Data plan, which includes unlimited text, unlimited data, and 450 minutes of voice (Or you can opt for the Simply Everything plan which is $99.99 for unlimited everything). But as we said in our announcement last week — you’ll also have to pay an additional $10 Premium Data fee for the use of 4G/WiMax. This is not optional. Yes, even if your area doesn’t have 4G, you’ll have to pay the $10 extra. Sprint says that this is essentially future-proofing the device, since they do plan on spreading their WiMax market to an additional 18 markets by the end of 2010, and you can of course use the 4G in the 32 or so existing WiMax markets. Still, paying for something that you can’t even use is not something we can get behind

RadioShack ready to rock and roll with HTC EVO 4G

May 17th, 2010

Are you ready for the next superphone? Just what makes a phone “super” in the first place, you ask? Well, HTC’s EVO 4G fits the bill perfectly – after all, it is the first 4G smartphone in North America, and the good folks over at RadioShack are more than willing to roll out one of these puppies to you, where it will remain a Sprint-exclusive device at the moment. RadioShack customers who are interested will be able to place a pre-order of this exciting new device at any one of more than 4,000 RadioShack stores from May 14th onwards, so if you haven’t done so already, what’s keeping you? After all, it offers far superior hardware compared to the Google Nexus One which was dubbed a superphone by the Big G themselves, so why not check out the hardware specifications right after the jump before taking the plunge?

If you are interested in placing a pre-order, you can do so by picking up a $50 RadioShack gift card that can be applied toward the purchase price of the device, while scheduling an appointment to pick up and activate the device. The HTC EVO 4G is ready to hit participating stores throughout North America from June 4th onwards. With its obvious 4G name penciled in, this means you can now take advantage of incredibly fast downloads on 4G networks where available, not to mention a slew of hardware specifications that will definitely get the geek in you super excited :-

Before you pick it up however, you can further enhance your first-hand engagement at select RadioShack stores nationwide that are deemed to be “HTC EVO 4G experience centers,” which specially trained experts will demonstrate features and benefits on a live HTC EVO 4G handset. Guess this goes down well with Google’s assertion that it will stop selling its Nexus One online anymore simply because the average Joe still prefers to touch and “fondle” their smartphone(s) before coming to a justifiable purchase decision. Are you looking forward to the EVO 4G?
