Gearburn Award: Best Innovation in Hardware 2011

December 16th, 2011

This has been coming slowly but steadily, but 2011 is where it started to become a feature you’d kinda expect. Our case in point: WiFi in cameras.

This is a small one, an obvious one, and a great one. You take a pic of something, you want to share it on Facebook. OK. So, take the pic, pull out the SD card, stick it in your laptop, fail to find the PC, oh yes, it’s still in the bag under the cat, shoo off the cat, fire up the laptop, stick in the SD card, copy the file across, fire up Facebook, upload the image, eject the SD card, put it back in the camera (don’t forget, now).
Or stick a WiFi radio in the camera, and let users share pics directly.

Sony launched the DSC-G3 camera back in 2009 that had WiFi. It kinda sucked. It’s only two years later that this tech has become mainstream, although currently devices mostly only offer the main sites (Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Picasso). Hopefully these will become user-customisable.

WiFi is not everywhere, so expect 3G to start appearing in more gadgets. Better will be devices that will connect directly to your smartphone or laptop via WiFi to let you connect as you choose, and extend functionality (Samsung did this to an extent with the SH100 camera to give you remote view on the viewfinder and camera control, but it was sadly crippled).

2011 is the year of the Graphics Processing Unit – when it became a mainstream technology on mobile phones. This is going to be a critical tech over the next few years as mobi sites get loved up with HTML 5 – because we reckon by 2013 we’ll be celebrating the year of the Mobi Web App, and toasting the slide of native apps into decay and hopefully oblivion.

As we become more connected, spend more time using our phones to do complicated things, and expect higher resolution and bigger displays, a strong GPU will make the difference between a phone that feels fast, and one that is only fast on paper.

The developments in GPU tech are at an inflection point – the next architecture change is shared memory, where the CPU and GPU can read and write to the same pool, which should add a bunch of blisters to performance. We think shared-memory will be mainstream by 2013.
FIRST RUNNER UP: COMPUTERS ON CHIPS

A fully-fledged computer with comms and I/O and display drivers and memory: as big as a small matchbox. This year we’ve seen some that would kick the ass of a big ol’ IBM XT from the 80s without blinking, would kick the ass of a Pentium from the nineties without breaking a sweat, and could probably keep up with a cheap laptop from the 2000s. We ran a story about FXI’s Cotton Candy a month back, and there’s the more academic Raspberry Pi project.

Thunderbolt is more than USB 3. A lot more. First, it’s faster. A lot faster. At 10GB/s it’s double USB 3 and much faster than the raw transfer rate of a SATA drive, which means whether your storage is internal or removable will no longer matter.
But raw bandwidth be damned, what’s more interesting is that it combines DisplayPort and PCIe bus in the same port. So you can connect your ultralight, medium-powered laptop to your new-generation display with a built-in high-performance graphics card for when you want to do some gaming.
Better, it can daisy-chain, so you can plug your Ethernet cable, keyboard, mouse, external hard drives, printer and tea-cup warmer into your display, and then just a single cable to your laptop.

Impressed? There’s more – it can also supply up to 10W, which will probably not be enough to charge your laptop battery, but could extend it almost indefinitely.
A downside is cable cost – like SCSI cables, Thunderbolt connectors are “active” – they have some quite complicated circuitry built into the plugs and currently cost around US$50 from Apple, but then again, we’ve all been raped by the iStore’s cable prices. Expect the prices to drop rapidly.

2011 saw the launch of a bunch of entry-level smartphones, that bring apps, Google Navigation and always-connected social media to the masses. Smartphones will always be more expensive than feature phones (all that extra processing power, memory and graphics performance needed to run a proper OS), but as the cost comes down, and more Chinese manufacturers enter the space, smartphones are no longer just for the 1% and their footsoldiers. No, the proletariat get to waste their lives in Twitter now, too.

Hardware 2.0 ‘Very Best Kit List’ for June 2011

May 30th, 2011

Welcome to the Hardware 2.0 “Very Best Kit List” for June 2011. Here I’ve put together a list of the best high-end and mid-range and budget components currently available. So if you’re thinking of building or even upgrading a PC, this list is a must-read for you!

Interesting Note: Noticed the price of a few components go up a few bucks here and there this month. Not sure if this is a supply chain problem resulting from the Japanese earthquake/tsunami or not.

These components are on this list because I firmly believe them to be the best either in terms of performance or price – although I’m ready to admit, as always, that there’s room for debate and some choices “go with the gut” more than others.

The geekiest gadgets of CES 2011

January 8th, 2011

CES 2011 saw the announcement of lots of Android tablets, gobs of 3D HDTVs, cameras galore, and smartphones coming out the wazoo. All that stuff is great, but that’s not really what GeekTech is all about. No. We want the Geek. We want the weird tech, the awesome tech, the stuff that pushes the limits. And luckily for us, there was plenty on show this year in Vegas. Submitted for your approval and enjoyment, here are some of the geekiest finds from CES 2011.

Lexar’s Ridiculously Tiny Flash Drive

These little guys may be small in stature, but they are huge in storage. With capacities as high as 128GB, the new Lexar flash drives are both adorable and functional. For the paranoid out there, the drives also support 128-bit AES, so your super secret files won’t be out in the wild should you lose the drive. Learn more…
The Ice-Cold PC Puts Its Competition on Ice

Winner of Lenovo’s “What’s Your Idea Of Fun?” campaign, this chilling case mod makes your PC look cool. The case is liquid acyclic, giving the illusion that the machine was left in the freezer a bit too long. Coupled with a few LEDs and presto, the PC was ready for the spotlight at CES. Learn more…
Erebus Lets Overclockers Fantasize

On show at CES 2011 was iBuyPower’s ridiculously awesome (or awesomely ridiculous–take your pick) Erebus desktop PC. This monster comes overclocked at 4.4GHz, and thanks to a slightly ridiculous cooling system, it can be overclocked further still. It’s enough to excite any geek. We expect to get our paws on the Erebus sometime in February so look for our review of it then. Learn more…

Wall Street Beat: IT Spending Forecast to Rise in 2011

January 8th, 2011

Despite ongoing worries about the strength of the U.S. recovery, sovereign debt in Europe and inflation in various parts of the world, global IT spending is due to increase this year, according to Forrester Research and Gartner.

IT purchases will rise 7.1 percent this year compared with 2010, to US$1.69 trillion, according to Forrester. Gartner, which unlike Forrester includes telecommunications in its forecast, puts global growth at $3.6 trillion in 2011, a 5.1 percent increase from 2010.

After a strong 2010, the sustained spending growth, fueled especially by enterprise software and mobile-device purchases, bodes well for IT vendors.

Even though most IT bellwethers last year easily outperformed 2009 quarterly results, confidence in the technology sector wavered in mid-2010 as fears of a double-dip recession took hold. Concerns about anemic job growth and continuing mortgage defaults in the U.S., and the specter of sovereign debt default in countries including Greece, Spain and Ireland, depressed the share values of tech companies on exchanges in the third quarter.

Starting in September, a string of strong, in some cases record, financial results from vendors including Microsoft, Oracle, and IBM helped renew confidence, leading to a technology-led rally in the markets. Share values of computer companies on the Nasdaq, for example, are now on average about 21 percent higher than they were a year ago.

The macroeconomic concerns of 2010 remain, but to a large degree, they have dissipated. “The fact that Democrats and Republicans reached agreement on tax cuts and an additional stimulus has gone a long way toward reducing concerns about a double-dip recession,” said Forrester analyst Andrew Bartels. Forrester will be putting out its new Global Tech Industry Outlook next week.

The 7.1 percent rise in global IT spending predicted by Forrester is slightly below its estimate of a 7.2 percent rise in spending in 2010. But Bartels pointed out that the 2011 figure is, in a sense, more impressive because it comes on top of a larger spending base.

The implosion of Lehman Brothers in September 2008 sparked a virtual collapse of the financial sector, which in turn depressed spending in all sectors, including tech, in 2009.

IT spending in 2011 will bring tech back to pre-recession levels, and more. “Global spending in 2010 brought us slightly behind 2008,” Bartels said. “2011 will clearly put us above 2008.”

More importantly, Bartels notes, tech has resumed what Forrester considers an 8-year boom cycle that the recession covered up. Forrester analysts believe that over the past 60 years, the tech market has gone through eight-year cycles — eight years in which the tech sector grows at twice the level of the general economy, followed by eight years during which the IT sector matches general economic growth. The period 1992-2000 was followed by an eight-year period of slower growth during which companies digested, for example, the ERP systems put in place in the 1990s.

Now, enterprises are intent on absorbing business analytics and cloud technology that makes them more responsive to client needs and better able to manage their supply lines. In fact, companies such as Tibco, Informatica and Pega Systems — which focus on data integration and business process management software — weathered the 2009 downturn much better than did other tech vendors, in some cases racking up steady year-over-year gains even during the depths of the recession.

In Gartner’s analysis, the telecom equipment market is poised for the strongest growth this year, driven in part by purchases of mobile devices, with global spending in that sector forecast to grow 9.1 percent, to $465 billion. Like Forrester, Gartner foresees enterprise software sales growth accelerating while computing hardware spending growth slows somewhat.

Gartner put enterprise software sales growth for 2011 at 7.5 percent, rising to $253.7 billion dollars. That compares with 6.1 percent growth in 2010. Hardware growth will slow from an 8.9 percent increase in 2010 to a 7.5 percent increase this year, reaching $391.3 billion, according to Gartner.

However, Gartner, like Forrester, sounded a note of caution about 2011. “While the global economic situation is improving, the recovery is slow and hampered by a sluggish growth outlook in the important mature economies of the U.S. and Western Europe,” said Richard Gordon, research vice president at Gartner, in a statement issued Thursday.

As always, IT spending — and general confidence in the technology sector — are linked to the macroeconomy. On Friday, for example, the tech-heavy Nasdaq fell 13 percent, closing at 2696, as data showed U.S. jobs growth last month was not as strong as expected.

OnLive Cloud Gaming Coming to Vizio Hardware

January 6th, 2011

OnLive, which is a cloud based gaming solution, especially useful for gamers who don’t have powerful setups or beefy video cards (but want to play PC or modern console games), is coming to tablets and even phones. OnLive partnered up with Vizio to bring the technology to various Vizio devices with VIA Plus support for future Blue-ray players, and their Android-based tablet and smartphone.

Playing high-end computer and console games on a portable device is really a mobile gamer’s dream come true. One question comes to mind about bringing such a gaming solution to different devices, based on different control schemes, is that it could potentially make the games less-or-more competitive for certain gamers online in multiplayer matches. An OnLive Viewer app is currently available for iPad but not allow actual control of the games — at least not yet.
