IHS Screen Digest is forecasting global year-end unit sales of 12.2m units and the initial shipment is in line with our expectations. Given significant brand equity built over 140m unit sales of current handheld platform Nintendo DS, we expect very high levels of consumer demand for the successor. Glasses-free 3D and the promise of Nintendo’s first party library (as well as some significant publishing commitments from third parties) will drive sales through the launch period.

Longer term, the outlook is less certain given the environment is very different from the one which allowed the DS to thrive. Non-dedicated mobile devices, notably Apple’s iOS device range, are winning increasing shares of gaming consumption. Apple’s iTunes App Store has conditioned consumers to a mobile gaming pricing model which dramatically undercuts ASPs for packaged games on existing dedicated gaming handheld platforms: ASPs range from 60c to $5 for the most part with many lifetimes worth of entirely-free gaming available from free Apps, ad-supported Apps and microtransaction-supported Apps.

While dedicated handheld games publishers would argue (fairly) that the quality and investment of games for DS and PSP (and shortly 3DS and PSP2) is of a different scale to games on smartphones and tablets, the issue is how much of the market cares enough to invest in a dedicated handheld games console if they already own, or plan to buy, one of the increasing numbers of smartphones or tablet devices tied into iTunes or the Android Marketplace. Dedicated gamers will see Nintendo through the first 20m units but it is a significantly broader market which drove DS north of 100m units.

While ASPs are likely to withstand such pressures for the premier league of handheld IPs eg, Super Mario, Pokemon, IHS Screen Digest believes that ASPs for packaged handheld titles outside of the chosen few will come under severe downward pressure. The quality, sales, content libraries and addressable markets of smartphone and tablets are all growing and will continue to place increasing levels of pressure on the dedicated gaming device market.

IHS Screen Digest believes that dedicated handhelds must offer sufficient significant differentiating factors to compete in a fragmenting and proliferating device landscape with maturing content delivery ecosystems. Nintendo has opted for auto-stereoscopic 3D on the feature front and will also bring its library of top-tier gaming IPs to bear on the marketplace. Thus far there have been few indicators regarding Nintendo’s digital strategy and whether it will intensify from lukewarm current-generation initiatives. Sony is expected to announce details of PSP2 in the next month: we expect no retreat from Sony’s traditional leading edge technology strategy for the hardware while PSN is likely to play a significant role in terms of content.

The fourth quarter of 2010 was the strongest quarter of the year for the PC market, although it failed to meet the expectations of research firms IDC and Gartner.
According to the Quarterly PC Tracker Survey released on Wednesday by IDC, overall worldwide PC shipments grew 2.7 percent year-on-year during the fourth quarter, with Gartner reporting a slightly higher 3.1 percent as part of its quarterly report. Both numbers missed the firms’ expectations. IDC had predicted 5.5-percent growth while Gartner forecast 4.8 percent.
IDC said that one of the main reasons for the “modest” gains was that PCs face competition from tablets such as Apple’s iPad. In addition, it suggested that people were happy with computer hardware they already own. That trend is expected to continue in 2011, the report said. Gartner had similar sentiments, pointing to the iPad and other consumer electronics devices like game consoles treading on the PC’s turf.

Everyone’s saying that the world has gone mobile, but it hadn’t really sunk in until we saw the list of the most viewed reviews in 2010.
It seems that everyone who’s anyone is buying a mobile device. And they want the best. These are the gadgets everyone was looking at this year.

Number 1: Sony Ericsson Xperia X10
Sony Ericsson expands on Android’s excellent web browser with its huge 4-inch screen real estate and a first-class multimedia experience, but Timescape needs improvement.

Number 2: Samsung Galaxy S
Sure it looks like an iPhone, but on the inside the Galaxy S is a web-browsing, media-playing beast of a smartphone and one of the best Android phones in Australia today.

Number 3: Nokia N97 mini
The N97 mini is better than the original, but not so when compared with smartphones from other manufacturers. Its S60 OS helps the mini feel like an old phone even before it hits the stores.

Number 4: Apple iPhone 4
Some will still consider Apple’s iPhone the benchmark for today’s smartphones, but its revised design raises issues we haven’t seen in a phone of this calibre before. Those upgrading from an iPhone 3G would be wise to consider a 3GS instead.

Number 5: Apple iPad
The Apple iPad is the first affordable tablet computer worth owning, but it won’t (yet) replace your laptop.

Number 6: Nokia X6
The X6 delivers first-class features in a second-rate package. The excellent camera and media player are tarnished by a clunky on-screen keyboard and a sometimes confusing user experience.

Number 7: HTC HD2
There’s no doubt in our minds that the combination of power, features and good looks make the HTC HD2 the best Windows Mobile smartphone ever made.

Number 8: Samsung N150
The Samsung N150 is among the first netbooks to use the new Intel Atom N450 chip. As a result, it offers excellent battery life, but it’s far from perfect. Unfortunately, its cramped keyboard and comparatively small hard drive let the side down.

Number 9: HTC Wildfire
The Wildfire is a lot of phone for comparably little money. If you can live without 3D gaming, the Wildfire will tick the rest of the boxes needed by most users from a modern smartphone.

Number 10: Samsung Wave
Bolstered by excellent hardware and performance, the Samsung Wave outshines most phones at a similar price and showcases the promise of the Bada OS.

You were in the middle of an important task, and the computer restarted automatically without any prior notice. Very much annoying experience indeed! The experience worsens when you find similar problem occurring again and again. How to cope with the situation? Well, you have two options. You can either consult a computer repair service company or fix the problem on your own. If you would like to go for the second option, this is an article for you. Here we have discussed about some of the most common reasons behind PC restart problem and their solution.

Let’s start with the reasons why computer gets restarted automatically. Some of the possible reasons are overheating, faulty RAM, faulty Hard-disk, overheating up of hard-disk or other hardware problem. Your computer can restart on attaching some external USB device.

Viruses may also be the reason of automatic restart. As every issue is different, you need to take different measures to troubleshoot them.

If the computer restarts due to overheating, check that the cooling fans on the processor. Is it working properly? You also need to check for the extra fans that are placed on your computer casing/cabinet. All the fans should be clean and in good working condition.

All the latest applications and operating systems require good amount of RAM. Lac of enough RAM can be the reason of slow PC and restart. For RAM upgrade you need to check some certain things. Does your computer motherboard have dual channel memory support? If yes, then you can install two identical RAM modules to attain the best performance. You should remember that both the two memory modules should be of same memory frequency.

To replace RAM you can get tech support from a PC repair company.

Sometimes, it is seen that PC restarts on attaching some external USB device. If you have more than one USB device connected to your computer remove all of them. Then insert one by one, and check due to which device the PC is restarting.

If there are problems on the motherboard then also problems could occur. It is also seen that after installing new software the restart problem occurs. If it is the case, then uninstall the application to fix the issue.

A faulty Hard-disk may also be the reason of computer restart. A hard disk scan is required to find whether the hard disk is in good condition or not. You need to replace the hard disk, if there are bad-sectors on it.

If the computer is infected by viruses badly, then also it can get restarted automatically. You should install a powerful antivirus software program to counter this issue. Update the antivirus and run a full scan of your computer and kill all the viruses.

Google has delayed a much anticipated branded laptop powered by its Chrome operating system until next year.

Instead of a Chrome OS device for general release, Google announced a pilot programme aimed at people who “live on the web”.

Chrome OS is Google’s boldest bid yet to erode Microsoft’s market dominance with Windows software.

Google has already gone after one of Microsoft’s cash cows, Office, with Google Docs.

Chrome marks a departure in traditional operating systems, offering a light touch approach to controlling a computer’s hardware and applications.

It also targets users who spend most of their time on the web and are comfortable relying on the cloud to access their data.

“We think cloud computing will define computing as we know it,” said Eric Schmidt, Google’s chief operating officer.

“Finally there is a viable third choice for an operating system.”

Google’s head of product for Chrome, Sundar Pichai, said the pilot scheme is aimed at early adopters, developers and users who are used to using beta software.

They will be given an unbranded black notebook that has been dubbed Cr-48.

Mr Pichai said there would be no devices on sale until next year simply because the software was not ready for prime time, due to a number of bugs and unfinished features.

“This is a profound shift,” said Mr Pichai, claiming that the operating system is Google’s attempt to “re-think the personal experience for the modern web”.

“Chrome is nothing but the web,” he added.

Machines for the pilot scheme will start shipping soon.

Consumer devices from Acer and Samsung are due on the market in 2011. No pricing details were given.

After years of experimenting with the cloud, companies are turning over ever larger tasks to outside providers that deliver software and computing over the Internet.

Flextronics Chief Information Officer David Smoley knew he was taking risks as he handed over human resources computing tasks for his 200,000-employee company to an outside provider.

What would happen, for example, if the other company lost sensitive employee data, he wondered. Yet by enlisting Workday, rather than using in-house software and hardware, Smoley was able to cut costs by millions of dollars, and he says workers’ information has remained secure.

Executives in growing numbers are entrusting computing responsibilities to companies that deliver software and services over the Internet, from outside their walls. Rather than depending on expensive in-house data centers that house row after row of energy-sapping servers, Flextronics has turned to the so-called cloud. “To take full advantage of the cloud, I think you have to be willing to take some risk,” Smoley says.

While companies have been experimenting with the cloud in fits and starts for years, they’re now turning over large-scale operations to third-party vendors. Pleasanton (Calif.)-based Workday is now handling the human resources software that tracks everything from employee compensation and benefits to hiring for open positions at Flextronics, the Singapore-based maker of such electronics as Research In Motion’s (RIMM) BlackBerry handsets and Microsoft’s (MSFT) new motion-sensing Kinect add-on for the Xbox 360 gaming console.

Siemens (SI) turned to SuccessFactors (SFSF) for performance reviews and other tasks for its more than 400,000 employees, says Ben Pring, a senior research analyst at research firm Gartner (IT). About 50,000 employees at Winn-Dixie Stores (WINN) use Concur Technologies (CNQR) for travel and expense reporting.

Telecommunications gear makers Cisco Systems (CSCO) and Huawei and computer vendor Lenovo (LNVGY) are also Workday customers.
Growth Market

The worldwide market for cloud services is likely to grow to $148.8 billion in 2014 from $58.6 billion in 2009, according to Gartner. “It’s a big moment of change,” Pring says. “The last time companies saw this big a shift in computing was when PCs entered the workplace over 20 years ago.” In the next five years, companies will spend $112 billion cumulatively on software delivered as a service over the Internet and comparable services, Gartner says.

Demand for cloud services has been fueled as the recession forced companies to look for extra ways to reduce expenses. Workday’s sales grew 100 percent in 2008, 50 percent in 2009, and 100 percent in 2008, says Aneel Bhusri, co-chief executive officer of Workday, which as a closely held company doesn’t disclose revenue.

Flextronics’ adoption of the cloud is part of a series of computing shifts that resulted in $100 million in savings in three years, the company says. Expense reductions are essential at Flextronics, which has an operating margin of only 2.9 percent. Fewer staff and other resources are needed when a company moves to an outside provider than when it purchases and manages software in-house, from vendors such as SAP (SAP), the world’s largest maker of business applications, Smoley says. “You’re not buying $3 million worth of servers and signing a deal with a third-party integrator for $10 million,” Smoley says. He’s needed less than 20 people to implement Workday. “For an SAP implementation you would be talking 60 people, maybe up to 100 people.”

Just any type of Dell computer memory will not work in the memory slots as this will also lower the efficiency and overall performance of your computer. Moreover, if the computer memory fits physically in your computer’s memory slot, there might still be technical problems. Since the computer or laptop memory comes in variable speeds and if you put slow Dell on a fast motherboard, there will be brakes in the computer’s processing and efficiency.

The best place to find whether a particular type of Dell memory will work for your system is internet. Memory manuals from the Dell for laptops and computers have been listed and you can easily compare which type of memory will best fit your computer system. If you are still in doubt, hire the services of computer hardware expert and he will tell you what type of Dell memory will be an ideal match for your computer or laptop.
There are numerous computer problems that usually affect the computer, thus lowering its performance. The trick to fixing any computer related problem is to first find out where the problem is. Please read on to learn some tips that may help you find those problems and their recommended solutions.

Viruses are known to attack computers and may end up destroying vital information if not eliminated. You know that the computer has problems caused by viruses when it becomes extremely slow and applications take way too long or never respond at all. When this happens, get a strong anti-virus software program and carry out a full system scan to help find and remove the virus.

If you have been downloading and opening email attachments on a computer and it starts misbehaving, most probably it could have been attacked by malware. Common in the category of malware is the Trojan horse and worms which usually attack your files and may destroy the entire hard disk. For you to effectively do away with malware, consider doing a system restore and if it does not work, uninstall and then reinstall your operating system.

When the computer suddenly slows down in terms of its performance or you begin to notice some programs are being installed and you are not the one who is doing the installation, be prepared to deal with spyware. This is a type of malware which usually gets installed on your system and keeps collecting vital information on users each time without their knowledge. Once you are sure it is spyware, conduct a research on the internet and find out more on the freely available programs which will help you deal with it.

After doing a full virus scan and no viruses have been found but still find that the computer is running very slow, your disk could be the problem. Perform a disk clean up and carry out defragmentation on your hard disk to help organize it. Clear cache and history of websites that you visit to make your browser run faster.

Problems where the computer switches off on its own especially after a few minutes of usage are also common. This could occur as a result of overheating or it may be due to some other hardware faults. You can resolve this by switching off your computer and giving it a chance to cool down and if it still behaves the same way, you need to consider checking out your hardware components. Find a qualified person to assist you in working inside your computer if you do not have the technical know how.

As long as you can positively identify the various computer problems, the remaining part is not very difficult. Knowing where the problem is helps you find a solution to it. Do not forget to always conduct a back up for your system.

Even on the Gold Coast computer repairs are part of doing business in today’s worldwide marketplace. Find efficient and professional Gold Coast computer services to provide counsel and support.

GFI Software on Thursday introduced GFI MailSecurity 2011 email security software. The on-premises software checks inbound and outbound email using multiple antivirus engines, as well as an exploit detection engine, spyware detection, HTML sanitization and attachment checking.

Enhancements address two key attack vectors, according to Nicholas Sciberras, product manager, GFI, which are, “the most recent malware for which definitions have not been released and links in emails that point to malware.”

Other features include an updated dashboard, an HTML Sanitizer exclusion list, more comprehensive scanning of internal email and enhanced attachment checking.

GFI MailSecurity 2011 uses Norman AV’s Sandbox technology, which runs suspect malware in attachments, and analyzes the code activity, within a sandbox. This identifies, stops and isolates new and previously unknown malicious code that is in an attachment, “before it can damage computer networks or compromise data,” according to the company.

When running the optional AVG antivirus engine, GFI MailSecurity 2011 can now also detect links within email message body that point to malware.

The HTML Sanitizer exclusion list addresses the challenge of HTML tags and HTML forms in legitimate email being disabled by GFI MailSecurity’s HTML Sanitizer. The exclusion list lets email messages from approved senders bypass being scanned by the HTML Sanitizer. (Bypassed messages are still checked by MailSecurity’s other filters.)

GFI has improved checking of email attachments, including the ability to block attachments that exceed a specified size or are suspicious, while letting the rest of the message be delivered. GFI MailSecurity can now also do full scans of all internal email messages, using all of the product’s various filters.

Additionally, GFI MailSecurity’s dashboard now gives administrators access to various counters and important logs.

GFI MailSecurity runs on Windows Server 2008 or 2003 and requires an email server such as Microsoft Exchange. Pricing starts at $160 dollars for 10 mailboxes for the first year, and $102 for subsequent years, with volume discounts.

Choosing a computer can be very hard if you don’t know what to look for. You’ll be spending the money that you don’t have or you’ll be getting less-than-average PC if you don’t know what to look for. In this guide, a brief explanation will be given in order to guide you before buying your first PC.

1. The Purpose

When choosing a computer, always keep in mind the purpose of buying it. Is it for gaming? Is it for simple e-mailing? Mobility? If you want a good gaming PC, you will need a medium to high-end spec PC and it can be costly. If it’s just for simple document typing, you’ll not be spending that much. Mobility? A laptop with low-spec is enough for u if you just want to do e-mailing, word processing or Web.

2. Processor

The processor is one of the hardware needed in order for the computer to work. It can execute programs and the faster the speed, the faster it can process a program.

If you’re looking for a gaming PC, look for a faster processor. But if you just need a PC for doing e-mail, word processing or the Web, average speed processor is enough.

3. RAM

Random Access Memory (RAM) is used for the programs as a temporary storage space so it’ll be faster for them to access the memory in any order. So, the bigger the space, the better. However, keep in mind that the RAM speed is also important. For example, 4GB 1066MHz is better than 4GB 800MHz. For a gaming PC, you’ll need a higher amount of RAM with a good clock rate or speed.

4. Graphic Card

For gamers, a good graphic card is crucial in order for you to play the latest games. A dedicated graphic card with a dedicated memory works better than an integrated graphic card with shared memory.
Now you can even find a graphic card with a DDR5 memory. However, the important thing to look for when buying a graphic card is the GPU (Graphic Processing Unit) clock rate. The faster the GPU, the better the graphic card for gaming.

But if you use the computer primarily for e-mail, word processing or web, an integrated graphic card is enough.

5. Operating System

Operating system also plays an important part. A 32-bit operating system is enough for entry-level and light computer usage. Nowadays, people will usually go for Windows 7. For gamers, upgrading to 64-bit is a better option as you can install higher RAM and therefore, will make the performance better.

There are other criteria that you need to consider before choosing a computer. But these 4 are enough to make your decision before buying it.

Currently the small notebook computers in the marketplace are excellentThey’re particularly compact, include streamlined stylish styles, and most importantly, terrific overall performance.Consequently wheather you desire some thing for work, or family home, they may be useful for both.

For folks that vacation regularly, and therefore are continually on the road, the mixture of sizing and personal computer power is ideal.Whether it is for anyone traveling regularly with work, or pupils that are searching for a notebook which can be easily taken around from course to course. With the sizing and also portability they will conveniently fit straight into just about any totes, rucksacks, or briefcases, making computing out and about less of a challenge.

With the actual transportability provided, you can utilize it to share video clips along with photographs with family simply by taking them with you.And naturally you can use it to get caught up with anyone on-line, via e mail, myspace, or twitter!

You’ll instantly understand the benefit these systems offer you. These are within many peoples’ budgets nowadays, and are certainly not only accessible as a luxurious product for the affluent. The actual pricing possibilities nowadays allow it to be within reach of the majority of peoples’ funds.

As it reaches time for you to buy, be sure to realize the options and take these all under consideration. The straightforward accesibility of on-line testimonials tends to make this course of action less difficult, and you’ll discover the small notebook computer which is perfect in your case.Another major factor to take into consideration is the battery life, which will greatly affect how often you’ll be able to use the computer.

Keep in mind that portability is certainly one of the greatest benefits of these systems. With that being said, make sure you’re not losing out on portability just to get a few extra features that may be offered to you.Having all the bells and whistles may be nice, but if it comes with extra weight and size then you may not end up using it as much.

Of course with any purchase the price is certainly a huge factor to take into consideration.Often the smaller and lighter the computer, the more expensive it will be to purchase. There are exceptions to this rule though, and if you take the time to comparison shop you should be able to find one offering the best of both worlds.

With Christmas around the corner, this may be the ideal gift for a new university or college student. It is important these days that almost every student has access to a computer.Having their own small notebook computer will certainly make a world of difference to them.

Chief Executive Larry Ellison, investing heavily to integrate Sun technology, says an array of computers with Sparc chips tripled IBM’s performance benchmark speed. Not so fast, retorts IBM

As he tried to persuade investors and customers to get behind his planned purchase of Sun Microsystems, Oracle Chief Executive Larry Ellison said Sun would perform better on his watch than it had under predecessors. He took a step toward making good on the promises on Dec. 2, when he said Sun’s servers set a new record for database performance.

Oracle (ORCL) said a group of 27 computers equipped with Sun’s Sparc chips was able to run a database performance benchmark at a speed of 30.2 million transactions per second, 3 times as fast as a test result IBM (IBM) announced in August and also higher than a previous benchmark announced by Hewlett-Packard (HPQ). “We’re engineering the hardware and engineering the software to work together,” Ellison said, speaking at an event for customers and media in Santa Clara, Calif.

Database benchmarks show businesses the capability of a supplier’s computers and the price of using them to run their daily operations, says Nathan Brookwood, an analyst at market researcher Insight 64. “IBM was saying they’re leaving everyone else in the dust,” he says. Oracle “is shattering the previous benchmarks. They’re getting higher performance and doing it at a lower price.”

Oracle completed its $7.3 billion acquisition of server manufacturer Sun in January, putting itself in competition with computer hardware makers, including HP and IBM. “We think the HP machines are slow and vulnerable in the market place, and we’re going to go after them,”

IBM spokesman Rick Bause says Oracle’s “transparent attempt to attain benchmark bragging rights backfires by exposing just how underpowered and inefficient Sun systems are since they’re telling customers they’ll need 27 Sun servers to beat the performance of three IBM machines.” HP spokesman Michael Thacker says the company is the No. 1 server supplier: “The combination of our technology leadership, product performance, and pricing continues meet the needs” of business customers.
Oracle’s R&D Spending Up $1.5 Billion

When Oracle closed the Sun deal on Jan. 27, it said it would increase research and development spending by $1.5 billion in the 2011 fiscal year, which began in June, reflecting increased investment in Sun technologies. Oracle has forecast an additional $1.5 billion in fiscal 2011 profit as a result of buying Sun.

By owning Sun, Oracle can sell customers more high-end systems that contain computing power, storage, network connectivity, and software designed to work together. In September, Oracle introduced two such systems: Exalogic for running business applications and a new version of its Exadata computer for running Oracle’s database software. The machines use Sun’s Sparc processor.

Oracle has spent more than $42 billion in acquiring more than 65 companies since the beginning of 2005 to expand into areas that include business applications, hardware, and the middleware that makes various programs work together. Ellison used the spending spree to move beyond Oracle’s bread-and-butter database products.

The company announced two new computers and a new version of Sun’s Solaris operating system and said all would arrive next year. A family of Sparc Supercluster computers—the kind that set the benchmark result—will be general-purpose computers for running database software, middleware, and customers’ business applications. A computer called the Exalogic Elastic Cloud is designed for running Oracle’s middleware.
Loyalty to Hardware Brands: Fading

Server suppliers, including Oracle, HP, IBM, and Dell (DELL), are finding it harder to foster customer loyalty because differences among chip designs are becoming less-defined and products are sharing more attributes, says Jim Shepherd, an analyst at market researcher Gartner (IT). “The problem for all these guys—and Oracle in particular with Sun—is there’s less and less hardware loyalty,” he says. “In order to support openness, they’ve all become more and more similar.”

Oracle holds 6.2 percent of the $12.3 billion global server market, down from Sun’s 7.4 percent share a year ago, according to Gartner. Companies have been switching from Sun servers to less-expensive computers that use chips from Intel (INTC), according to analysts.

Ellison’s ability to raise money, zest to expand, and willingness to make bold acquisitions makes Oracle a formidable rival, says Tom Georgens, CEO of Sunnyvale (Calif.)-based storage manufacturer NetApp (NTAP). “It’s not easy to understand all the things they might do,” he said. “They’re an unconventional competitor.”

During its first-quarter earnings call on Sept. 16, Ellison said Oracle could “double the size” of its hardware business over time. The company may realize $7.5 billion in hardware sales this fiscal year, Brent Thill, an analyst at UBS in San Francisco, said in a Dec. 1 research note. Thill has a “buy” rating on Oracle shares.

Hundreds of thousands of students and employees in the Houston school district had their Social Security numbers and other personal data exposed to a suspected computer hacker, HISD officials announced Thursday.

A criminal investigation, launched in October after district employees noticed a security breach, has found that the hacking was more severe than initially thought, leaving students’ grades and employees’ bank account information vulnerable.

Only one student’s personal records were viewed, and nothing appears to have been changed, according to authorities, but the suspected hacker had access to 10 years of private data on students, employees, vendors and job applicants in the nation’s seventh-largest school district.

“This is something that’s quite serious,” Houston Independent School District Superintendent Terry Grier said Thursday while announcing a plan to improve computer security at a cost of $10 million to $15 million.

HISD officials said the network was breached through a computer at Pin Oak Middle School in Bellaire. They did not release the date of the incident, and it’s unclear whether the computer was accessed on campus or remotely.

The investigation, which involves the FBI, is ongoing.

“We have not identified who the person is — if it’s an adult or a student,” said Melinda Garrett, HISD’s chief financial officer.

District officials would not say whether they contacted the parents of the student whose records were accessed because it was part of the investigative material.

Grier revealed in late October that district officials suspected hacking, and they shut down access to the Internet, e-mail and other online information for two days to secure the system. Grier said Thursday that the district learned shortly before Thanksgiving that the breach “was much more serious than what we had originally thought.”

Grier said HISD was especially vulnerable because its technology infrastructure was aging, and individual schools have been allowed to buy hardware and download programs with little oversight.
‘Very aggressive’ security

With about 30,000 employees and 202,000 students, HISD has loads of personal data online. Most of the district’s 9,000 vendors are less vulnerable because they don’t have Social Security numbers on file, Garrett said.

HISD’s new security plan includes having a third-party review of its system, strengthening firewalls, upgrading password procedures, training employees and adding positions in the network security department. HISD also plans to limit access to its wireless Internet network.

“We are in the midst of really being very aggressive in trying to implement cures and remedies for this situation,” Grier said. “I can tell you that our infrastructure is old.”

Several school systems across the country have had their computer systems hacked – often by students trying to change grades – but larger districts generally are better prepared than smaller ones, said Linda Sharp, who runs the cyber-security initiative for the Consortium for School Networking, a group for chief technology officers.

Several school systems across the country have had their computer systems hacked – often by students trying to change grades – but larger districts generally are better prepared than smaller ones, said Linda Sharp, who runs the cyber-security initiative for the Consortium for School Networking, a group for chief technology officers.

Sharp said having sophisticated security technology is the first step in prevention, but it’s also important to train employees and students to take precautions to keep their systems secure.

“Most of the problems can happen from inside,” she said. “I can’t tell you how many times you find a password on the bottom of a mouse pad.”
Beefing up firewalls

Gayle Fallon, president of the Houston Federation of Teachers, said employees initially were upset that the suspected hacking kept them offline for two days.

“I think they’ll panic if they read their bank account information was exposed. I would,” Fallon said.

Roxanne van Ravenswaay, president of the parent group at Pin Oak Middle School, said she wasn’t overly worried that her children’s personal data could have been accessed, but she hopes HISD learns a lesson from the incident.

“I hope that they have a better system in place where something will not happen in the future, and they will be able to protect our children’s information,” she said.

HISD’s chief technology officer, Greg Valdez, said officials are repeatedly running tests of the computer system, removing inappropriate software and beefing up firewall protection.

“We are continuing to work with IBM and law enforcement to identify vulnerabilities and fix them,” he said.

HISD has notified employees about the current breach and is sending letters home to parents. It does not plan to contact former employees and job applicants, Garrett said.

Adobe’s pushing hard with hardware acceleration and for good reason: using the GPU takes a serious load off the CPU, which Flash is pretty hard on at the best of times, especially on Mac OS X. Adobe hopes to address those concerns with today’s release of Flash 10.2 beta and the arrival of a new feature called Stage Video.

The idea behind Stage Video is that it’ll enable hardware acceleration of the whole video rendering pipeline, and as a result, decrease CPU load by up to 85%. If that’s not enough to get excited about, Adobe claims that Stage Video will make Flash player best-in-class for playback performance of video, with higher frame rates, reduced memory usage, and higher video quality with greater pixel fidelity. To the end-user Stage Video means faster and smoother video playback on the Web, and most importantly, Flash video will no longer slow your computer to a crawl.

Another addition in the 10.2 update is hardware acceleration support for Internet Explorer 9, which takes advantage of the native acceleration hooks available in IE9 for rendering surfaces. Support for full screen mode with multiple monitors has also been improved, now allowing you to keep video in full screen mode on one monitor while still being able to use the other for something useful rather than a blank, black screen reminiscent of a chalk board. Native custom mouse cursor support has also been integrated into Flash player, which will be useful for mouse-orientated Flash-based games.

Adobe reckons that Stage Video will bring “native video performance” to the desktop, and therefore could be an important step in the war with HTML5 video tagging. Grab the latest beta of Flash player 10.2 for Windows, OS X and Linux from the Adobe beta labs — and then check out Adobe’s Stage Video YouTube demo, which has already begun leveraging the new Flash technology.

According to research conducted by Citrix, up to 75pc of Irish company directors and IT managers intend to migrate to Windows 7 in the near future.

The survey, which examined attitudes towards Windows 7 among Irish companies, found that 42pc of companies intended to migrate to the platform within the year and that many organisations see virtualisation as a “key consideration”, with 60pc planning desktop virtualisation (DV) – the process that separates a personal computer desktop environment from a physical machine using a client-server model of computing – to aid the migration.
Managerial resistance

The survey also examined trends in the DV market and found 72pc of those interviewed believed that DV would be a strategic change rather than a tactical one, although 64pc experienced resistance towards migration from management and boards.

“There is no doubt that the increase in migration is driving the demand for desktop virtualisation. The strategic imperatives that worry company directors include return on investment, ability to use existing hardware for longer, flexibility and ability to easily and quickly diversify their IT infrastructure as needs change and new markets open up.

“As this research shows, many of our customers already understand these and other benefits of using desktop virtualisation to control the costs and accelerate the migration,” said Niall Gilmore, country manager for Citrix in Ireland.

The Citrix research was conducted during November and surveyed the opinions of company directors and IT managers across varied sectors.

Bigfoot Networks is announcing today that its super-fast networking card — which can speed the internet on your computer by 10 times — can be built directly into a graphics card made by VisionTek Products.

By integrating its networking product into a graphics card, Bigfoot expects it will have a much easier time getting its technology into the hands of consumers. It can also reduce the combined cost of the solution and pass the savings on to consumers. Inverness, Ill.-based VisionTek, meanwhile, can offer a unique product that no other graphics card vendor has.

In the past few years, Redwood City, Calif.-based Bigfoot has figured out how to speed up the internet on a PC by more than ten times the typical speed for a home broadband-connected computer. If your DSL (digital subscriber line) broadband phone line normally offers you internet access at 1.5 megabits a second (fast enough to look at web sites), then Bigfoot’s Killer Nic 2100 card can make it feel like 15 megabits a second (or fast enough to let you watch videos or play high-speed online games without annoying slowdowns).

To get that speed boost, gamers had to take a big step before. They had to pay $129 for a Killer 2100 gaming network card, which they installed in a free slot in the computer, known as a PCIe slot. The problem was that many systems sold at retail don’t have extra PCIe slots, and that turned off some customers, said Michael Howse, chief executive of Bigfoot, in an interview.

Now, with the Killer technology built into the VisionTek Killer HD 5770 graphics card, Bigfoot has knocked down that barrier and lowered the cost as well. The graphics card sells for $199, which is at least $50 cheaper than purchasing two separate products.

“We’ve taken away the excuse of not having room in your computer,” Howse said.

At the same time, Bigfoot will have a much better business model. Instead of making low-margin hardware, now Bigfoot can license its technology to vendors such as VisionTek, which will integrate it with their own graphics cards. Bigfoot is essentially selling its own chips and software (known as the Bigfoot Networks Killer E2100) to the vendors rather than to consumers.

VisionTek, which is one of the biggest graphics card suppliers, will incur the expense of marketing the product, but it also can set itself apart from the dozens of other graphics cards on the market. By putting the Killer technology on the same hardware as a graphics subsystem, Bigfoot can eliminate some costs from the computer.

For now, VisionTek will only combine the Killer technology with graphics cards based on graphics chips from Advanced Micro Devices’ Radeon HD 5000 family. But Howse says the company will expand the offering to other graphics chips in the future. Eventually, Howse expects that Nvidia-based graphics will also be combined with the Killer technology.
The Bigfoot technology comes with software that users can fire up on their computers. It can tell them which applications are slowing down the computer, and it can block them so they don’t interfere with online games. Howse said that VisionTek has been a close partner for a while and the two companies worked on the product together. Bigfoot will also license its technology to a variety of other computer companies.

“This is a business model that can scale up,” Howse said.

One of the most common way to store infos is the PC. It is also used to communicate (Internet and more). The full data integrity besides the PC functionality is more than important to PS users. Since lots of viruses, worms and such can be found on the Internet, people are more cautious than ever. So let’s see what is really System Cleaner Pro. This program is a fake antivirus that might cause serious damage to your computer if you let it fulfill its mission. The following website Remove System Cleaner Pro has pertinent infos about System Cleaner Pro.

This malware will infect your computer system with the help of Trojans. This program will claim that by removing unused files and folders on your computer, it will effectively speed up your system. Just like throwing out the garbage, they say. Don’t believe it: it is but a malware. A program conceived to act like an antivirus. This aspect really makes this malware more dangerous than others viruses. You will use this program believing it will help your computer while in fact it will destroy it. More than that, it will ask you to do an online purchase for a full version of it. If you don’t realize that System Cleaner PRO is a fake solution, you’ll end up spending money on things that will only increase the proportions of the damages.
