ISIS XL Embedded Board to be Deployed in US Positive Train Control Programme

April 26th, 2011

Eurotech, a leading supplier of embedded technologies, products, and systems, announced today its ISIS XL embedded computer has been chosen as one of two hardware reference designs for Positive Train Control (PTC) applications by Meteorcomm, LLC. PTC increases railroad safety through a system of monitoring and controlling train movements.

The widespread installation of interoperable PTC systems in the US is mandated by the Rail Safety Improvement Act of 2008. PTC technology will be installed on 160,000 miles of railroad track and on board 30,000 rail vehicles by 2015 at an estimated cost of $12 billion.

All PTC Wayside Messaging Servers (WMS) must incorporate an embedded computer certified to run Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and the Meteorcomm communications stack, such as the ISIS XL. As an approved hardware reference design, the Eurotech ISIS XL within a WMS can connect Wayside Interface Units (WIUs) to the PTC network to communicate vital data such as wayside status, locomotive progress and speed.

“The Eurotech ISIS XL embedded computer is one of two hardware reference designs selected by Meteorcomm, since it meets the requirements for the PTC Messaging System,” explains Fred Pot, business development manager for Meteorcomm.

“As a PTC hardware reference design, Eurotech’s ISIS platform provides our customers the best starting point for establishing PTC-conformant applications,” said Arlen Nipper, CTO for Eurotech, North America. “Developing certified, interoperable PTC systems has the potential to be an extremely complex process for an intelligent system created to read rail sensors and communicate via wayside messaging servers. Our certified reference hardware platform will help PTC system integrators quickly deploy and release their PTC applications on time and on budget.”

The Eurotech ISIS provides all the benefits of Intel Atom architecture including optimal balance of power and performance. Consisting of a Eurotech Catalyst XL processor module and carrier board, the ISIS offers high-performance x86-compatibility in a fanless design that requires only a fraction of the power previously needed for comparable Intel architecture systems. Eurotech’s DuraCOR system and DuraMAR Mobile IP router are packaged, off the shelf, platforms that incorporate the ISIS XL embedded computer and offer PTC integrators an even greater level of integration and flexibility.

IEEE Initiates Standard-Making Process For Key Smart Grid Fiber-Optic Components

April 26th, 2011

IEEE, the world’s largest professional association advancing technology for humanity, recently announced the formation of three working groups to develop technology standards that will assure improved performance by key fiber-optic components in the Smart Grid.

Proposed standard IEEE P1591.1 – Standard for Testing and Performance of Hardware for Optical Groundwire (OPGW) – provides numerous processes and procedures for hardware that will be used with OPGW (Optical Ground Wire) cables. It covers construction, mechanical and electrical performance of the hardware as well as test requirements, environmental considerations, and acceptance criteria for qualifying the hardware.

The standard enables the best use of OPGW by assuring that users will have complete and accurate information about the types of hardware, specifications for hardware and acceptance testing for qualifying hardware. It will simplify procurement practices and standardize testing to assure product quality.

Proposed standard IEEE P1591.2 – Standard for Testing and Performance of Hardware for All-Dielectric Self-Supporting (ADSS) Fiber Optic Cable – will address the lack of a hardware standard that has resulted into ADSS cable failures caused by using hardware incorrectly.

The proposed standard will standardize testing and other aspects of hardware to be used with ADSS systems, which in turn will simplify procurement and assure product quality.

Proposed standard IEEE P1591.3 – Standard for Qualifying Hardware for Helically-Applied Fiber Optic Cable Systems (WRAP Cable) – will address mechanical and electrical performance, test requirements, environmental considerations, and acceptance criteria.

WRAP cable is designed to be helically wrapped around a conductor or other messenger on overhead power facilities and will be a major component in the Smart Grid.

WITC To Offer Associates Degree Online

April 26th, 2011

Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College now offers a two-year administrative professional associate degree that will be completely online for the 2011 fall semester.

“WITC received many requests from students to provide the program online,” said academic dean Leslie Bleskachek. “This recognizes the need for full-time employees to have an option to enroll, even if they are working during the day and can’t attend day classes. A degree in this program can often be a stepping stone into higher levels within organizations after initial placement.”

The administrative professional program will continue to be offered in a classroom setting with the first year available at any of WITC’s four main campuses. The second year is offered at the Ashland and Rice Lake locations.

For individuals currently working in an office setting who want to have the credentialing necessary to move into a decision-making position or enhance a current skill set, this program offers tremendous advantages.

“This program is the perfect fit for the working professional wanting to update or learn the latest software and technology,” said Amy Pozniak, WITC-Superior administrative professional and business graphics instructor. “It is also a good fit for someone who has a passion for technology and software applications, the ability to multitask, and enjoys working with the public.”

The administrative professional program prepares individuals with the software and hardware, administrative and interpersonal skills needed to perform the duties of administrative support personnel. The second year of the program allows students the flexibility of increasing skills in either communications or software applications. With additional education or work experience, there is opportunity for graduates to advance into supervisory or managerial positions.

Russian Helicopters Plans London IPO

April 26th, 2011

OAO Russian Helicopters said Tuesday it will seek a listing on London and Moscow stock exchanges in an initial public offering expected to raise at least $500 million, as the company benefits from Russian military modernization and arms exports in a conflict-ridden world.

The company, controlled by the Russian government through an opaque state corporation, will seek to raise $250 million in newly issued shares and global depositary receipts, each of which is equivalent to one share. Besides the new shares, the Oboronprom military hardware unit of the Russian Technologies corporation will also sell existing shares worth at least $250 million, Russian Helicopters said Tuesday in a statement.

The expected price range for the IPO is between $19 and $25 a share, valuing the company at between $1.8 billion and $2.38 billion ahead of the listing, it said. The proceeds of the IPO will be used to pay off debt and buy up shares in subsidiaries.

The company’s valuation is “reasonable” since it implied a multiple of enterprise value to earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization of between 6 and 7.1 based on last year’s earnings, Renaissance Capital said. Ebitda may rise to $579 million in 2011, compared with Ebitda of about half a billion dollars last year on revenue of some $2.7 billion, the brokerage said. Net debt is about $930 million.

“The holding’s main drivers are military helicopter fleet renovation in Russia, since the current fleet is old, and strong export contracts, especially in India,” RenCap analyst Mikhail Safin said. “The main Russian Helicopters export markets are Asia, Latin America and North Africa.”

Russia’s Defense Ministry will purchase more than 1,000 helicopters by 2020, including more than 100 in 2011, Interfax reported Monday, citing a deputy defense minister. Russian Helicopters says it delivered a total of 214 helicopters in 2010.

Besides benefiting from military spending, increased oil and gas exploration amid today’s high oil prices may boost Russian Helicopters sales, Mr. Safin said. Bank of America-Merrill Lynch, BNP Paribas SA and VTB Capital are the joint global coordinators and joint bookrunners in the listing.

Santa Cruz Hardware to open in former Blockbuster Video on Soquel Avenue

April 26th, 2011

Longtime local Rodney Hoffer is bringing back Santa Cruz Hardware.

The owner of Aptos Hardware and Westside Hardware, which both carry the Ace Hardware brand, Hoffer’s investing almost $500,000 to open an independent store. The location is 1214 Soquel Ave., in the heart of the Eastside business district.

Hoffer got the keys to the former Blockbuster Video store from landlord Bei-Scott Company last week and plans to remodel and reopen in July.

He will hire about 12 new employees.

“I’m extremely excited,” he said, choosing the name the Santa Cruz Hardware in honor of the historic business — founded in 1883 — where he got his start.

“It’s an incredible location,” he added. “I’ve been looking for a good space on the Eastside for 10 years.”

A hardware store owner since 1986, Hoffer, 61, of Corralitos, has survived an earthquake and a roller coaster of an economy.

He became his own boss after 15 years of working in high tech when he bought Santa Cruz Hardware.

Why hardware? He grew up on a farm in North Dakota, 11 miles from the town of Kief, population 100, named by Ukrainian settlers.

“On a farm you’re always fixing stuff,” Hoffer said.

Over the years, he bought three hardware stores and closed two, adjusting to changing times.

His latest project, in 2007, increased the size of Westside Hardware by 50 percent in the wake of the Mission Street Safeway expansion.

That investment paid off.

“We expanded the inventory,” Hoffer said. “Things have been good. It’s been positive every year.”

He had been talking with Bei-Scott Company for about six months when Blockbuster announced the shutdown as part of a Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization, then took its giant blue sign off the building. Bei-Scott will repaint the exterior, now a steel gray.

The Eastside store is 5,000 square feet, about the same size as Hoffer’s Westside store, and will have a similar layout.

Aptos architect Chuck Burket is overseeing the remodel, with work being done by friends or employees putting in overtime after their regular shifts.

Hoffer estimated fixtures, equipment and computer system cost about $130,000, with another $350,000 for inventory.

He’s squeezing the start-up money out of cash flow rather than approaching a banker for financing. He would like to open this month but it will take six weeks to get fixtures ordered from a company on the East Coast.

The city permit process, in contrast, was speedy.

“I got the permit the same day I went down there,” Hoffer said, noting that use remains retail and parking met the city requirement.

Hoffer plans to move a third of the employees from the Westside and a third from Aptos to give the new store a veteran workforce.

He expects to hire about a dozen new employees to fill the resulting openings. Applications are being accepted at the Aptos and Westside stores.

For this store, he is taking a new approach. Instead of relying on the Ace brand, as he does in Aptos and on the Westside, he plans to be an independent, making his own choices about products based on his experience.

“I want it to be my own hardware store,” he said.

“It’s cool he’s trying that model,” said Lydia Corser, who owns Greenspace, which specializes in green products for home and business building projects. She hopes the two retailers will cooperate to compete, a new trend known as “co-opetition.”

Although the Eastside area recently lost a longtime retailer, Gateways Books & Gifts, it has gained a new one, Monkey Girl Beads, bringing moms with children in tow, and Cayuga Vault, under new ownership, is being remodeled.

In addition, caterer Joshua Keenserver plans to open Conscious Creations in May or June in the former home of Black China Bakery and Cafe Tazzina.

Keenserver, 34, of Pleasure Point, plans an all-organic cafe and bistro with a farmers’ market.
