3D hardware is taking over Japan

January 20th, 2011

Americans haven’t really seemed very interested in the prospect of replacing their perfectly good HDTVs and Blu-Ray players with 3D-capable versions of the same, but that’s not true in Japan, which is one of the markets with the highest penetration of 3D electronics. In fact, according to new research, 3D in Japan is just selling like gangbusters.

According to Tokyo-based research firm BCN, up to 56.8% of new Blu-Ray recorders that have been shipped in the last four months are 3D compatible, up from just 6.7% in September. This is despite the fact that 3D-enabled Blu-Ray recorders are expensive: they cost $900 each, which is about 30% more expensive than a 2D version of the same.

The Japanese 3D madness doesn’t end there. According to BCN, 23% of all TVs sized at 40 inches or larger sold in Japan in December were also 3D… up from just 3% in August. Wow.

What’s helping growth? As usual, lower prices: manufacturers just keep slashing them. The average price for a large-screen 3D TV is only $2,300 in Japan currently, down $500 from August. If we can see similar price drops in America, my guess is that 3D will finally start catching on.

Nintendo shipping 4m 3DS hardware units by end Q1 2010

January 17th, 2011

IHS Screen Digest is forecasting global year-end unit sales of 12.2m units and the initial shipment is in line with our expectations. Given significant brand equity built over 140m unit sales of current handheld platform Nintendo DS, we expect very high levels of consumer demand for the successor. Glasses-free 3D and the promise of Nintendo’s first party library (as well as some significant publishing commitments from third parties) will drive sales through the launch period.

Longer term, the outlook is less certain given the environment is very different from the one which allowed the DS to thrive. Non-dedicated mobile devices, notably Apple’s iOS device range, are winning increasing shares of gaming consumption. Apple’s iTunes App Store has conditioned consumers to a mobile gaming pricing model which dramatically undercuts ASPs for packaged games on existing dedicated gaming handheld platforms: ASPs range from 60c to $5 for the most part with many lifetimes worth of entirely-free gaming available from free Apps, ad-supported Apps and microtransaction-supported Apps.

While dedicated handheld games publishers would argue (fairly) that the quality and investment of games for DS and PSP (and shortly 3DS and PSP2) is of a different scale to games on smartphones and tablets, the issue is how much of the market cares enough to invest in a dedicated handheld games console if they already own, or plan to buy, one of the increasing numbers of smartphones or tablet devices tied into iTunes or the Android Marketplace. Dedicated gamers will see Nintendo through the first 20m units but it is a significantly broader market which drove DS north of 100m units.

While ASPs are likely to withstand such pressures for the premier league of handheld IPs eg, Super Mario, Pokemon, IHS Screen Digest believes that ASPs for packaged handheld titles outside of the chosen few will come under severe downward pressure. The quality, sales, content libraries and addressable markets of smartphone and tablets are all growing and will continue to place increasing levels of pressure on the dedicated gaming device market.

IHS Screen Digest believes that dedicated handhelds must offer sufficient significant differentiating factors to compete in a fragmenting and proliferating device landscape with maturing content delivery ecosystems. Nintendo has opted for auto-stereoscopic 3D on the feature front and will also bring its library of top-tier gaming IPs to bear on the marketplace. Thus far there have been few indicators regarding Nintendo’s digital strategy and whether it will intensify from lukewarm current-generation initiatives. Sony is expected to announce details of PSP2 in the next month: we expect no retreat from Sony’s traditional leading edge technology strategy for the hardware while PSN is likely to play a significant role in terms of content.

Firefox 4: no full hardware acceleration for Linux

January 17th, 2011

On Friday, the ninth beta version of Firefox 4 was published. On the official Mozilla blog numerous major functions were pointed out at the same time hardware acceleration was announced.

The director of Product Platform Management, Christopher Blizzard emphasised that Firefox 4 supports complete hardware acceleration under Windows 7 and Windows Vista via a combination of Direct2D, DirectX 9 and DirectX 10. While IE9 wont be available to the Windows XP operating system, hardware acceleration is something that is being looked at for certain operations (DirectX 9) in Firefox. For Mac OS X, hardware acceleration is supported by OpenGL, qualified as excellent.

Strangely, Christopher Blizzard didn’t mince his words when talking about Linux, with questions being raised after comments were left on user community sites, with Boris Zbarsky, a developer at Mozilla answering. “We have tried to activate OpenGL for Linux, and we have discovered that most of the Linux drivers are full of bugs which mean that we have had to disable the service for the moment”. Adding that support for WebGL (for 3D Web) had also been disabled for most Linux drivers (this support is assured by Direct3D in Windows).

For Linux, hardware acceleration will be done by composition (via OpenGL) which creates some issues. Hardware acceleration for content provided XRender works well and effectively, “if your drivers are decent, you will have something similar to Direct2D”, states Boris Zbarsky, who also used this opportunity to request help from X.Org developers.

As for full hardware acceleration under Linux for Firefox 4, Mozilla’s developers have nevertheless managed to have a stable environment with Nvidia proprietary drivers.

iPad 2 Hardware: New Details Emerge

January 16th, 2011

Apple watchers are expecting Apple to release the iPad 2 this spring, packed with new features and a refined form factor. Aside from various mock-ups of the next generation iPad appearing at CES this year, several recent leaks from industry insiders are painting a more detailed picture of what the iPad 2 hardware will include.

Similar to Apple’s improvements to the iPhone 4 with the Retina display, discoveries have been made indicating a quadrupling of screen resolution is in the works for the iPad 2. Thanks to the release of iOS 4.3 beta firmware, developers have found graphics in the iBooks application that have two different resolutions.

The culprit is a file titled “Wood Tile@2x.png” which is a background image that covers 1536×800 pixels. Besides the @2x in the file name that Apple also uses for Retina display iPhone 4 apps, this new size exceeds the current iPad’s 768×400 pixel screen. AppleInsider explains this would leave the iPad 2 with approximately 260 pixels per inch (ppi).

Although this might be less than the 326 ppi Retina display on the iPhone 4 it will be vast improvement on the current iPad’s 132 ppi. Getting 326 ppi on an iPad screen would require too much processing power for a mobile device, making a Retina display on the iPad 2 highly unlikely.

In addition to the improved display, two cameras on the iPad 2 is all but confirmed. FaceTime capabilities will make it possible to video chat with friends on other iOS devices, and eventually across platforms.

Mysterious square holes on iPad 2 cases were leading some to speculate that the device would have an improved speaker or include a USB port. Engadget now reports the iPad 2 will almost definitely have an SD card slot:

A built-in SD card slot is a departure from Apple’s current mobile devices. Not only this, but Apple plans to include several new chips inside the iPad 2. Look for a processor upgrade, improved graphics processing unit (GPU) and a Qualcomm hybrid baseband. Using this hybrid radio, Apple can manufacture one iPad 2 model that will connect to multiple cellular data networks, including Verizon and AT&T.
