XoticPC laptop, MSI motherboard, Nvidia & AMD GPUs

January 21st, 2011

Tom’s Hardware took a look at the XoticPC’s G73JW gaming laptop, a custom-build of the Asus G73JW. In its highest-performing version it features an Intel Core i7-940XM, an overclocked Nvidia GeForce GTX 460M and 16GB of Samsung DDR3-1333 RAM, double that of the original Asus model. At $3,600, however, it isn’t cheap, and those who are a bit more tech-savvy can save a bundle by customising the basic Asus machine themselves.

HardwareHeaven reviewed the MSI P67A-GD65 motherboard. It was praised for its high performance, rating even higher than the ASRock Extreme4, one of the leading boards on the market. It offers lots of connectors and a handy instant overclocking button called OC Genie 2, which makes overclocking easy for those who don’t want to, or don’t know how to, manually overclock it.

The EVGA GeForce GTX 580 FTW Hydro Copper 2 graphics card was reviewed by HotHardware. It received brownie points for its low operating temperatures, extreme quietness, room for overclocking, singleslot form, support for PhysX and CUDA and its lifetime warranty. The requirement of liquid cooling, along with its heaviness and high cost were some big drawbacks, however.

PureOC tested the Asus Radeon 6950 and 6970 graphics cards, both of which were described as “capable gaming cards”. The Radeon 6950 was seen as the better of the two, since it doesn’t have the temperature and power consumption problems of the Radeon 6970, but both were seen as slightly inferior to the Nvidia GTX 570, which has a price tag that falls between both AMD models, but offers much better performance. A lower price would make the Radeon cards better value.

TweakTown checked out the Galaxis Ares mid tower chassis, giving it a rating of 89 percent. The appearance is something users will either love or loathe, but it packs four fans, which should keep things relatively cool. This may come with the price of noise, however. Pricing has yet to be decided, but it is expected to aim at the lower end of the market.

Oracle Can Milk Exadata Servers And Software For Spurt Above $40

January 21st, 2011

Oracle mainly competes with IBM, Hewlett-Packard in the hardware business, IBM and Microsoft in database and middleware software business and SAP in the applications software business. In its recently announced quarterly earnings report, Oracle management cited that it continues to grow its hardware and software business faster in terms of market share and profitability. [1]

Oracle claims that it is not only getting ahead in the server hardware market with faster Exadata line of hardware, but also in the software market since the high-end servers makes Oracle’s software access faster. We estimate that Oracle’s software business is much more valuable than its hardware business.

As per our estimates, Oracle’s software business constitutes around 86% (database, middleware and application software) while its hardware business (servers and storage) constitutes only around 8% of $38.16 Trefis price estimate for Oracle stock, which is about 21% higher than the current market price.

Wipro IT chiefs quit; Q3 net meets forecast

January 21st, 2011

Wipro Ltd surprised markets with the resignations of the joint-CEOs of its information technology business, after reporting profit growth rates which lagged rivals Infosys Technologies LTd and Tata Consultancy Services.

India’s third-ranked software services exporter said company veteran T.K. Kurien was taking over as the new chief executive of the unit.

“The joint CEO structure was one of the key factors that successfully helped us navigate the worst economic crisis of our times. With the change in environment, there is a need for a simpler organization structure,” Wipro Chairman Azim Premji , said in a statement.

Wipro, which counts Citi, Cisco and Credit Suisse among its clients, forecast IT services revenue of $1.38 billion to $1.41 billion for the fiscal fourth quarter, up three to five per cent from the quarter ended in December.

IT services constitute about three-fourths of Wipro’s revenue.

“We are positive on all the large cap IT firms. We expect pricing to go up in the second half of FY 12, but volume growth for IT companies looks to continue,” Rohit Anand, IT sector analyst at PINC Research in Mumbai, said.

Earlier this month, sector leader Tata Consultancy Services beat profit estimates and said it saw strong demand for outsourcing services, while No. 2 Infosys missed forecasts and said the outlook for global economic growth was sluggish.

India’s top three IT service exporters have been on a hiring spree and have doled out pay hikes of up to 20 per cent to ward off poaching by global rivals.

Global spending on technology is likely to rise 5.1 per cent to $3.6 trillion in 2011, according to research firm Gartner, higher than its previous estimate as the dollar’s recent weakness helped push IT spending beyond its forecast for 2010.

But rising wages and intensifying competition from global firms such as Accenture and Hewlett-Packward are key risks to India’s showpiece $60 billion outsourcing industry. Volatility in global currencies is also a worry to the export-focused sector.

PROFIT GROWTH

Bangalore-based Wipro said fiscal third-quarter net profit rose to Rs 13.19 billion ($290 million) under international accounting standards from 12.03 billion a year ago.

A Reuters poll of brokerages had forecast a net profit of Rs 13.18 billion for Wipro, which develops software applications, integrates IT systems and manages call centres.

Wipro, which also makes computer hardware, consumer care products and electric bulbs, posted revenue of Rs 78.3 billion ($1.7 billion) in the quarter, compared to analysts’ estimates of Rs 80.1 billion.

The firm added 36 new clients, its biggest client addition in five quarters. It added 3,591 net staff in the third quarter.

Shares in Wipro, which has a market value of just over $25 billion, rose 9.3 per cent in the third quarter, underperforming a nearly 15 per cent rise in the sector index, but outpacing the main index’s 2.2 per cent gain.

Apple says ’screw you’ to iPhone users as it fits device with fixings that are almost impossible for you to remove

January 21st, 2011

If you want to repair your iPhone without the aid of Apple, you could well be screwed.

The computer giant has started to use a rare and type of screw that pretty much no one apart from them and their engineers has the screwdriver for.

The five-pointed ‘pentalobular’ fixing is to be fitted to the iPhone 4 and MacBook Air, as well as other types of hardware.

The tamper-resistant screw, which is similar to Torx security screws, will stop users easily taking off the outside case which protects the electronics of their devices.

Instead, Apple product owners will have to take their piece of hardware to an Apple engineer or try to purchase a special screwdriver, which will no doubt be very expensive.

This unusual type of screw first appeared in the mid-2009 MacBook Pro to prevent the battery being replaced.

A smaller version was then seen on the Japanese version of the iPhone 4, which was released last June, and on some other non-US versions of the device.

Apple is currently using these five-pointed fixings on the outer case of the current MacBook Air, and the Phillips screws on the iPhone 4 are also to be replaced with pentalobe screws.

If you’ve been lucky enough to avoid these awkward fixings so far, beware: Apple will replace your phone’s screws with the new tamper-resistant type if you take it in for any type of a service.

New AMD Chip to Change Perceptions of Netbooks

January 20th, 2011

Thought you knew netbooks? Hardware producer Lenovo is determined to change that. The company says its newest line-up of ultraportable netbooks will boast portability as well as power.

For most of their brief history, netbooks have been little more than compact, lightweight web browsing and word processing tools with minimal performance capabilities. For many consumers, that’s been just fine. Netbooks perform these basic functions (which, let’s face it, are probably the most important things a computer can do) admirably, and in most cases they cost less than $500.
Changing the Way Consumers Think About Netbooks

So long as the price doesn’t jump too high, consumers are always hankering for a little more power. It’s a tough line to straddle, but Chinese hardware producer Lenovo (known best, perhaps, for its work on the IBM ThinkPad) says it can do just that.

At the recent Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the company recently unveiled three new netbooks it says will redefine conceptions of netbook performance without dramatically expanding prices. (Source: pcmag.com)

The new devices include the Lenovo X120e, the IdeaPad S100 and the IdeaPad S250.

To date, most netbooks have used the capable but somewhat underwhelming single-core Intel Atom chip for processing power. That’s changed with two of the new Lenovo products. Instead, they’ll be using AMD chips from the Fusion APU series, which employ a single die housing both the CPU and discrete graphics.

The Lenovo X120e and the IdeaPad S250 (both touting 11-inch screens) will use the AMD E-350 APU, while the IdeaPad S100 (with a 10-inch display) continues to employ the dual-core Intel Atom chip.
New Chip Integrates Graphics, CPU on 1 Die

The key to improved performance is the AMD E-350 chip’s combination of the CPU and discrete graphics. The integration means a netbook equipped with this processor is not only more responsive, but can reportedly handle newer 3D video games. In essence, it trumps the Intel Atom chip, which doesn’t integrate graphics and CPU.

But it’s not just the performance boost consumers will notice when using the Lenovo X120e and IdeaPad S250. AMD boasts that its newest chip will also help conserve energy, extending the battery life of a system to as long as 8 hours.

It’s not yet known how much these new netbooks will cost, but it’s likely there will be a wide range of prices depending on a user’s hardware demands. Already Lenovo is hinting that some of these new netbooks could ship with 8GB RAM, HDMI ports, and even a 750GB hard drive.
