How to get your PC to recognise your printer

November 27th, 2010

lHELPROOM ANSWER Looking at the screenshot you provided, it appears that Windows has misidentified your printer, referring to it as a Posiflex PP-7000IIUSB Thermal Printer.

You can get around this by installing new drivers before plugging in the printer.

Download the latest Windows XP drivers for your printer from Canon’s support site. Unplug the printer and uninstall the existing Canon drivers from Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs.

Reboot, then install the new drivers.

Unless prompted to do so by the driver software, do not reconnect the printer until after you have rebooted the PC.

UK sees IT hardware sales boom

November 26th, 2010

The UK IT hardware market has grown 11 per cent this year, reaching a value of €19 billion (£16.1 billion), according to figures from the European Information Technology Observatory.
Sales of PCs alone this year rose by almost 13 per cent, to just under 16 million units. “Especially strong demand by private consumers is breathing new life into the PC market. That goes both for mobile devices and desktop PCs,” said EITO project manager Frank Früh.
However, the EITO expects IT hardware growth to slow to 2.6 per cent next year.
Consumer electronics, meanwhile, are set to grow just 0.1 per cent in 2011, which although modest, is a huge variation from the 2.7 per cent decline the category is projected to experience in Europe as a whole.

Apple buys former HP campus in cupertino

November 26th, 2010

Apple is the largest landowner in Cupertino with new purchase

Steve Jobs and crew have gobbled up some more land in Cupertino that was formerly used by HP. The campus that Apple has purchased is 98 acres in size and was the home to some of HP’s operations until this summer when the company moved out.

HP has owned the land for 20 years before it decided to consolidate operations in Palo Alto California according to Apple Insider. Mercury News wrote, “[The campus] has housed parts of that company’s personal computer division as well as some of its commercial software and hardware units. It’s also home to a high-tech ‘briefing center’ where HP holds meetings and shows off products to corporate clients.”

The purchase reportedly makes Apple the largest landowner in Cupertino and helps the city to fill in the million bucks per year in lost taxes HP reportedly payed. Apple and HP have made no official announcement on the value of the deal, but Apple Insider reports that some sources in the real estate industry claim Apple could have paid as much as $300 million or the property.

Apple’s head of PR Steve Dowling said, “We now occupy 57 buildings in Cupertino and our campus is bursting at the seams. These offices will give us more space for our employees as we continue to grow.”

Apple purchased the new land despite the fact that it has only recently started to use some of the buildings that were in place on land that it purchased in2006. The delay in using the 2006 land purchase was due to issues getting the land zoned for commercial use.

Taiwan market: Asustek to debut 8-inch Eee Note

November 26th, 2010

Asustek Computer is expected to unveil the 8-inch EA800, the first model of Eee Note series devices that will fall between tablet PCs and e-book readers in terms of functionality, on November 29 in the Taiwan market and launch in early December priced at NT$8,000-9,000 (US$261-293).

The EA800 is equipped with a Marvell processor and Linux operating system and supports Wi-Fi, shorthand writing and camera functions. The device also adopts a 3700mAh battery to provide a run-time of 10 hours per charge and supports e-book formats such as TXT, PDF and EPUB.

Asustek also plans to announce a 12-inch Wintel-based Eee Note in December with official launch set in January. The device will be priced at around US$900.

Since channel demand for e-book readers is currently still weak, the company will mainly push the products to the education market.

As for the company’s Eee Reader DR-900, which was originally set to launch by the end of November in retail channels, after evaluating the status of current channel demand plus the possibility that the device might cut into sales of its Eee Note devices, the company may delay the launch of the DR-900.

As both Samsung Electronics and Acer have recently announced their tablet PC plans, Asustek internally believes that the market still has not yet fully taken off, and related hardware and software are still not yet completely ready. The rushed announcements will only spotlight the deficiencies of their products against Apple’s iPad and may even damage the brands’ reputation. Therefore, Asustek is currently aiming to add more applications as well as improve the smoothness of the interface control of its devices to ensure they will attract consumers.

In addition, Asustek is ready to launch two 10-inch Eee Pads with one adopting Widows 7 and Intel’s Oak Trail platform, and the other Nvidia’s Tegra 2 and Android in March 2011 with prices set between US$499-599. Meanwhile, the company will also launch 7-inch Eee Pads, which may use either Tegra 2 of a solution from Qualcomm with Android, while a 3.5G model also featuring phone functions.

Toshiba has announced new AC100 Mobile Internet Device running Google Android 2.1 operating system in India. Toshiba AC100 houses Nvidia Tegra System-on-Chip to run the Android 2.1 smoothly. Sporting a 10.1-inch display, Toshiba AC100 would be available at all leading electronic and computer outlets in India for Rs. 18,721.

One of its kind Toshiba AC100 sports Nvidia Tegra 250 System-on-Chip processor that was debuted at the Consumer Electronics Show 2010 in January. Tegra 250 or Tegra 2 architecture features dual-core ARM Core A9 architecture System-on-Chip that runs up to 1GHz and has eight independent processors. Toshiba AC100 would be capable of 1080p HD encode-decode and Flash 10.1 hardware acceleration with the Tegra 250 chip.

Toshiba’s AC100 MID has 10.1-inch Clear SuperView display with LED backlight and supports 1024×600 pixel resolution. That just undermines the prowess of Tegra 2 chip which is capable of supporting 1080p HD video. Other internal hardware includes 512MB DDR2 333MHz RAM and mere 8GB Flash storage.

For wireless connectivity, AC100 has Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR support. You can connect different portable devices one USB and one Mini-USB port. The MID also offers a 1.3 megapixel webcam, Audio-Mic combo port, SD & MMC card reader, and HDMI Port for hooking it to HD Display.

Running Android 2.1 Eclair operating system, we’re sure that this laptop would be cable of Android 2.2 Froyo update on it. But Toshiba has put in Home Menu and a customizable desktop with widgets and shortcuts on it. That means Froyo 2.2 can be installed on only when the update is officially available.
