Microsoft releases out-of-band security fix for Windows

September 30th, 2010

Microsoft today published an out-of-band security update (MS10-070) to fix a flaw in ASP.NET that is being exploited in the wild.

The vulnerability could allow an attacker to compromise data on Windows machines ranging from XP and Server 2003 through Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2.

“An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could read data, such as the view state, which was encrypted by the server,” Redmond said today.

Microsoft’s Scott Guthrie provides an in-depth overview of the flaw on his blog.

Today’s release comes only 11 days after Microsoft initially warned of the bug, making for one of the company’s quickest turnarounds — second to a seven-day release in January.

Given the urgency, Microsoft issued the fix a couple weeks ahead of its usual monthly release cycle, though it won’t be available through Windows Update for a few days.

Until then, network admins and consumers can manually download the patch via the Microsoft Download Center without waiting for widespread distribution.

MacBook Pro owners eligible for free repair in Nvidia lawsuit settlement

September 30th, 2010

MacBook Pro owners who bought a laptop with an Nvidia graphics processor in 2007 and 2008 may be eligible for free repairs as part of a settlement agreement for a class-action lawsuit.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in California, had claimed that Nvidia sold defective graphics processing units and media communication processors that affected the performance of some laptops.

Symptoms included distorted or scrambled video on the laptop’s monitor or, in some cases, a blank screen even when the computer was turned on.

While it’s settling the lawsuit, Nvidia is not admitting any wrongdoing as part of the case.

The affected Mac models include 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pros bought between May 2007 and September 2008.

Not every laptop sold during that period is eligible for the settlement—the MacBook Pro models have to contain an Nvidia chip and feature an eligible serial number.

(You can check on the former using the About This Mac panel, and confirm the latter on this lawsuit settlement page.) The laptop also needs to be experiencing the scrambled video or blank screen issues.

Dell and HP notebooks are also included in the settlement.

You can get a full list of affected models on the Website containing all the details of the settlement.

Anyone filing an approved claim will be eligible for free replacement of the Nvidia graphics chips and reimbursement for any repair charges. HP laptop owners may also receive a replacement notebook.

Laptop owners who don’t want to be legally bound by the class action settlement have until November 5 to exclude themselves; that’s also the deadline for filing objections to the settlement.

A hearing is slated for December 20 to approve the settlement. The claim filing period will begin after that.

Nvidia settles in laptop gpu class action lawsuit

September 30th, 2010

Considering the time frame involved, and the lack of recent publicity many of you out there may have long forgotten about the issue by now, but anyone that was hit by those defective NVIDIA GPUs back in 2008 will want to take notice.

NVIDIA has finally reached a settlement in the class action lawsuit that was the result of hundreds of thousands of laptop users being afflicted with defective GPUs.

That means that anyone with an affected Apple, Dell or HP laptop will be eligible for some form of compensation.

In the case of Apple and Dell laptops, that includes a replacement of the GPU or MCP, while users of an affected HP laptop will actually get a full replacement laptop “similar in kind and value.”

Anyone that has already paid to have their laptop repaired due to the GPU issue is also entitled to a full reimbursement provided they have the necessary documentation for the repairs.

NVIDIA GPU settlement covers Apple, Dell, HP repairs

September 30th, 2010

NVIDIA has agreed to provide compensation to owners of Apple, HP and Dell computers as part of a settlement in a class-action lawsuit.

The legal action surrounds NVIDIA graphics components in a variety of computers, including 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pros manufactured between May 2007 and September 2008.

Other systems include certain Dell and HP machines sold between 2005 and 2010.

The plaintiffs argued that many NVIDIA-supplied GPUs malfunctioned and caused a variety of different problems.

The chips are blamed for causing distortions, scrambled video or other issues on affected computers.

The settlement, which includes a $2 million fund for reimbursement, entitles owners of certain Apple and Dell machines to receive replacement graphics components and repair service.

Owners of certain HP notebooks can obtain a replacement computer of similar value.

A full list of eligible machines is available on a dedicated website for the “NVIDIA GPU Litigation.”

The claims period will not begin until after the final hearing, which is scheduled for December 20. Eligible owners can return to the website to file claim after the final hearing has been completed.
