Gateway launches wimax-equipped nv series notebook

September 30th, 2010

Gateway has updated its NV notebook series, adding a new model that ships with integrated WWAN support.

Along with the expected 802.11 Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet network connectivity, the 15.6-inch (1366×768) NV59C66u packs a built-in Intel 6250 WiMAX card — though, it might not be the best time to jump on that bandwagon.

Many customers report that Clearwire is throttling speeds from 10Mb/s to 0.25Mb/s once after consuming about 7GB to 10GB in a month.

Processor options range from Intel’s Core i3/i5 to AMD’s Athlon/Turion chips.

The NV59C66u ships with 4GB of DDR3 RAM (expandable to 8GB), as much as 500GB of storage, a DVD or Blu-ray drive, HDMI output, a multitouch trackpad, and Gateway’s “social networking button” for quick access to Facebook, YouTube and so on.

The company is shipping its WiMAX-equipped NV for $700 with plans to release more updates to the series over the coming weeks, starting at $480.

Gateway has also upgraded its ZX One all-in-one desktops, adding more “design choices, configurations and price points.”

Both the 21.5-inch ZX4951 and 23-inch ZX6951 have Blu-ray drives and 1080p (multitouch) displays, making them capable home media systems.

The smaller model carries a 2.8GHz Pentium dual-core, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB HDD, while the larger one ups that to a 3.2GHz Core i3, 640GB of storage, and a TV Tuner.

Both are available today for $899 and $999.

Profit taking contributing to weakness among computer hardware stocks

September 30th, 2010

After trending higher throughout much of the past month, computer hardware stocks are giving back some ground in morning trading on Thursday.

The pullback by the computer hardware sector is reflected by the 1.6 percent loss being shown by the NYSE Arca Computer Hardware Index, which ended the previous session at a four-month closing high.

Profit taking is contributing to the weakness in the sector, with traders cashing on the recent gains by computer hardware stocks despite the release of some upbeat economic data.

NetApp (NTAP) is turning in one of the sector’s worst performances, falling by 3.8 percent.

With the loss, NetApp is pulling back further off the more than nine-year closing high it set on Tuesday.

Additionally, shares of Lexmark (LXK) are currently down by 2.4 percent after ending the previous session at their best closing level in over three years.

Western Digital (WDC), Dell (DELL), and Seagate Technology (STX) are also posting notable losses, pulling back off of yesterday’s highs.

Dell 7″ tablet pc is weeks away – company

September 30th, 2010

A representative for Dell, the world’s third largest maker of personal computers, said in an interview that the company’s slate-type personal computer with 7” screen would be available in the following weeks. In addition, there will be a 10” and 3” models.

“Dell will launch its seven-inch tablet in the next few weeks and a 10” tablet within 6-12 months,” said Amit Midha, the president of Dell in China, reports the Wall Street Journal.

Mr. Midha also reiterated the plans to release tablets with 3”, 4” and 10” screens in the future.

Even though the current Streak with 5” screen is based on Google Android operating system and the forthcoming 7” model will also use the same OS, he reported added that some of the new products among the slew of tablets from Dell will also run Microsoft Corp.’s Windows operating system, without naming specific products or whether it would be Windows 7 or Windows Phone 7”.

Michael Dell, the head of Dell, has already demonstrated the 7” slate from the company at a conference, emphasizing the importance of tablets for the company in particular and for the industry in general.

Given the current confirmation by the president of Dell China, it is highly likely that the 7” model will emerge ahead of the Christmas holiday season.

Unfortunately, nothing is presently unknown about the hardware inside Dell’s 7” slate. The only thing for sure is that Android suggest an ARM-based system-on-chip.

September 30th, 2010

Haven’t you heard? Companies are making 3D laptops now! We know that’s a bit tongue-in-cheek, but the rash of 3D notebooks is becoming somewhat overwhelming. At first, NVIDIA’s 3D Vision was almost exclusively reserved for the desktop.

Now, it seems like a new 3D capable notebook is arriving every other week or so.

Toshiba is keeping the roll going with their new Satellite A665-3D, which utilizes 3D Vision technology and software that can convert 2D material into 3D content for viewing.

Toshiba ships this machine with one pair of glasses (active shutter), and the machine itself is encased in the Fusion X2 finish and equipped with an Intel Core CPU, NVIDIA GeForce GTS 350M GPU (1GB GDDR3), a built-in emitter, 15.6″ TruBrite LCD and integrated harman/kardon speakers.

Toshiba reveals canvio Hard Drives with usb 3.0

September 30th, 2010

Toshiba added the Canvio 3.0 portable hard disk drive with a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface to its lineup. These new drives offer transfers at up to 10 times the speed of USB 2.0 drives.

The Canvio 3.0 drives will come in storage capacities of 500GB, 750GB, and 1TB.

Each of the new drives will be preloaded with Windows-based NTI BackupNow EZ software. For security, the drives offer up to 256-bit data encryption and password protection. Prices for the drives start at $119.99.

With the ever-increasing demands of digital media, Toshiba introduces the Canvio™ 3.0 portable hard disk drive (HDD) featuring a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface.

For the same price as competing USB 2.0 drives, Canvio 3.0 drives offer blazing fast file transfers at up to 10 times the speed of USB 2.0 drives.

Available in storage capacities of 500 gigabytes (GB1), 750GB or one terabyte (TB1), Canvio 3.0 drives feature simple plug-and-play operation, pre-loaded backup software, and backward compatibility with personal computers and other devices equipped with USB 2.0 ports.

“Power digital consumers, and even typical PC users, are storing high definition video content, high resolution digital images, and multi-gigabyte music collections.

When you consider that a single HD video can easily be three times the size of the same video in standard definition, it’s easy to see why file transfer speeds are just as important as storage capacity,” said Manuel Camarena, product manager for consumer storage at Toshiba Storage Device Division.

“With the integration of the USB 3.0 interface, Canvio 3.0 drives significantly improve file transfer performance for large media files and dramatically minimize the wait time for backup and recovery processes.”

Building on the success of its current Canvio Portable Hard Drive product family, Canvio 3.0 drives feature the same easy-to-use features users have come to expect from Toshiba portable hard drives.

Windows™-based NTI® BackupNow EZ™ software provides step-by-step and fully-customizable backup capabilities, including the option to backup specific folders, certain file types, and conduct a system backup.

The software can also restore the entire system if Windows is unable to start.

In addition, complete password-protection with up to 256-bit data encryption prevents unauthorized access to data and a special Drive Space Alert monitor sends an onscreen update when storage space is running low.

On the inside, an Internal Shock Sensor and Ramp Loading Technology keep data safe during day-to-day movement from a desk, pocket, bag, or beyond.

The stylish Canvio 3.0 product line also continues Toshiba’s high quality industrial design, including its pocket-sized, rounded rectangular form factor with rubberized edges and high gloss black finish with red, green, blue, white, or silver graphical accents.

The focus on design extends even to Toshiba’s environmental efforts.

The Canvio 3.0 product maintains the same dimensions as previous Canvio products which are 25 percent smaller2, reduce the quantity of materials used in production, and feature product packaging using 100 percent recyclable materials.
