Book selling, and now multimedia selling, giants Amazon are set to go head-to-head with Apple iTunes by offering video downloads for $.99. The price for Amazon video services was previously $1.99.
WorldTVPC reports the move comes on the heels of Apple’s newly revamped Apple TV box, which allows users to rent video for $.99.
Amazon is also planning a move into the business of subscription-based streaming video content, similar to Netflix and Hulu. While Amazon is in negotiations with major companies like Fox and Walt Disney to provide their content, it’s expected that, at least at first, the content available through Amazon subscription video will be not unlike that of Netflix’s current selection – mostly older movies and shows, since studios seem reluctant to share their newest content. (However Netflix, we previously reported, has made major strides in updating their on-demand content.)
Unlike similar plans by companies like Apple and Sony, Amazon’s video streaming is largely platform independent. Apple’s video requires Apple hardware, but Amazon video can be watched online and via Internet enabled television through hardware like Roku and TiVo – not unlike future competitor in the subscription-based video distribution biz, Netflix.
