It has been nearly three months since the news that Nintendo was lowering the price of the DSi and DSi XL in Japan and in the UK, arousing speculation that Nintendo would do the same for the U.S. market around the time of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). Keenly observant San Diego area Fry’s Electronics shoppers may have noticed that DSi hardware has seen frequent discounts and bargain bundles since the Japanese and UK price drops in June.

Speculation of a U.S. price drop on DSi hardware has finally come to fruition. Nintendo has officially announced that the DSi will drop in price to $149.99 and the DSi XL will drop to $169.99 starting September 12, 2010, a savings of $20 from the current MSRP. The DS Lite will remain at $129.99.

The variety of iterations of the Nintendo DS has sold over 42 million units in the U.S. alone since its release in late 2004. With a strong library of games and with a lower price tag, Nintendo is poised to pad those numbers entering into the approaching and important Holiday season.
