After three years, ps3 hardware breaking even

June 29th, 2010

After years of selling PlayStation 3 hardware at a loss, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida said that the company is finally at least breaking even on hardware sales.

“This year is the first time that we are able to cover the cost of the PlayStation 3,” Yoshida told IGN. “We aren’t making huge money from hardware, but we aren’t bleeding like we used to.”

When the PS3 launched in 2006, supply chain analysts at iSuppli estimated that Sony lost over $300 on every 20GB model sold, and over $240 for every 60GB console sold. Those losses came despite steep retail launch prices of $499 and $599 respectively.

In December, iSuppli did another teardown following the September 2009 release of the slimmed-down PS3 hardware. Boasting less-expensive components, the more cost-effective model was losing Sony around $37 per console sold, the analysts estimated, with new consoles selling for $299.

On the back of a product rebranding, a new marketing campaign and new more affordable hardware, Sony said that it has been struggling to keep up with demand. In May, major U.S. retailer GameStop said PS3 was out of stock an average of 80 percent of the time during the February-April quarter. Yoshida told IGN that Sony is “trying to catch up our production.”

Selling a console at a loss is typical for Sony and Xbox house Microsoft. Console makers sell hardware below costs to establish an initial install base, then make money back after a time when economies of scale make hardware profitability possible — and through sales of higher-margin software. Nintendo, however, makes it a standard practice to not sell hardware at a loss.

Yoshida added that Sony is not looking to further cut the price of the console in the near future, but rather taking a value-added strategy through hardware-software bundles, including a package that includes software, a PS3 and the PlayStation Move motion control system.

Storage drives moving to 4k byte sectors

June 29th, 2010

Today announced the launch of the “Are You Ready?” campaign, an effort to raise awareness in the computer industry about the advances and advantages of long data sectors.

IDEMA is the data-storage industry’s trade association dedicated to driving technology standards that support the advancement of data storage.

The campaign focuses on helping the computer industry prepare for the transition of hard disk drive (HDD) processing from the historical sector lengths of 512 to 520 byte increments, to increments of 4,096 bytes per sector using a technology referred to as Advanced Format.

PC upgrading – get to know your hardware

June 29th, 2010

If you need to reinstall your printer driver, most likely it went something like this. You bought a new printer or for some reason need to install the printer again. You go through the installation and you get this message: “Unable to install printer. The printer processor does not exist.”

Error messages are always frustrating and this one seems to always come when you really need to print something out. It never comes when you have the time or the patience to figure out what is wrong. Therefore, here are some quick ways to fix this error message quickly and easily.

Reinstalling the Printer Driver Manually

This method will only work if you have the installation software that came with the printer. If you do not have the installation software, then you will need to skip this section and go directly to the “Reinstalling the Printer Driver Automatically” section.

* Place the installation CD in the drive. If it tries to autorun, stop it.
* Click Start

* Click Control Panel

* Select Printer and Faxes or Printer and Other Hardware

* Select Add a New Printer

* Run the Hardware Wizard

* Select “Search automatically for updated driver software”

* Follow the onscreen instructions

After you have finished the Hardware Wizard, print out a test page to make sure everything is working correctly. If you are still having problems, then continue on to the next section.

Reinstalling the Printer Driver Automatically

If the previous method did not work or if you want to skip it and go to a method that is guaranteed to find the correct and most recent drivers for your printer, then this method will work.

First, you need to go online and find a highly rated driver update software. You will want to look for a 5 cow rating from Tucows or some other rating service. Additionally, you will want to find one that works for Windows 7, Vista, XP, and Windows 2000. This will let you know the software keeps up to date with a wide variety of platforms. At the very least, it needs to work with your Windows operating system.

Next, you will want to download the software and run the scan. It should list your printer as needing a driver. At that point, you will need to purchase the software to download the new drivers. Do not be surprised if it finds multiple drivers on your computer that need updating. This is normal and to be expected.

Finally, download and install the printer driver and any other drivers it finds. The whole process from scanning to finding and downloading the drivers will only take a couple of minutes. After you finish, you may be prompted to restart your computer. Once you restart your computer, your printer will be working correctly.

How Did My Drivers Become Outdated?

Software companies continuously update their drivers to make them run better and to coincide with the Windows Update. When this happens, your drivers become outdated and you don’t even know what happened. Therefore, it is a good idea to check for driver updates at regular intervals.

What to expect from windows 8

June 29th, 2010

Steve Jobs once said that Microsoft doesn’t think of original ideas. Many would agree to that. Most Microsoft products are concepts copied from competitors to have some presence in that segment — Zune, Windows Marketplace, Docs, Xbox, Bing…the list is endless.

Microsoft thrives on the deep penetration it has owing to controversial anti-competitive practices. One example is: if you want to buy a branded PC, it comes pre-installed with Windows even if you want to run something else on your machine.

Microsoft is reportedly working on the next version of Windows — dubbed as Windows 8. Will that mean more hardware woes and vendor locked features. No one knows if your current machine will run on Windows 8 or not.

There are reports that Microsoft is adding a facial recognition software in Windows 8 to monitor whether you are present in front of your computer or not. If you are not it will put the machine to sleep, or wake it up when you return. This image recognition might mean a more bloated system. Currently Windows 7 needs at least 20-50 GB of hard-drive. As a comparison, must secure and customizable Ubuntu needs only 2-5 GB of hard-drive.

Windows Vista/7 was a leap in terms of polish, but there was little to functionality. Most features are either non-productive of less-exciting for user. Windows shake is one for example, where if you shake a window the rest will disappear. Windows has never been on the innovative curve. The GUI, a feature that made PCs popular among home users was licensed from Apple.

The File-browser of Ubuntu supports multiple tabs where you can open multiple folders within the same window. KDE’s new desktop feature beats both Apple as well as Windows. Ubuntu also has a 3D desktop which increases productivity many-fold. Most of these core features of Linux are missing from Windows 7.

It seems the biggest challenge for Windows 8 will be to keep up with the tough competition it is getting from Ubuntu and Apple. Only time will tell what Windows 8 has to offer.

Samsung r580 hd notebook

June 29th, 2010

Master of none – that’s how the saying goesBut Samsung seems to have created a machine that defies that phrase. Packed into its R580 HD notebook is a Core i3-330M (2.13GHz) Intel processor, 4GB memory, 320GB hard drive and a DVDRW drive, for the (not insubstantial) cost of around £592 online.

Samsung has also squeezed in an Nvidia GeForce 310M graphics system to make sure that video and gaming are trades that it also masters. Naturally, that hardware makes it a seriously quick machine. So while cheaper models might look like they offer a similar spec, it might be worth investing a little more to get this kind of performance.

However, this is not your slim ‘n’ easy travelling netbook – with a 2.6Kg to match its epic proportions. But what this monster machine does offer is a luscious 15.6-inch screen to make the most of everything from HD video to crisp text in word processing documents.

In fact, there’s around a £100 surcharge to upgrade to the Blu-ray version (with 500GB hard drive), but with a screen this good you’ll want to make the most of it. It is a slightly selfish viewing experience, though – with the reflections you’ll get if you’re looking at it on an angle, you’ll want to be sat squarely in front of it.

As for daily use, a well proportioned keyboard means you won’t mind typing on it if you decide this is going to be a full-time replacement for a desktop PC.

Four LED lights cleverly highlight the mouse area when you touch it, meaning that the rest of the time it blends into the pattern. Our only slight concern is that it took a while to get used to the left and right-click mouse buttons which appear in a single bar, but a USB or wireless mouse would sort that out.

And you may want to give the Samsung R580 its own space in the house though, as we typed this review on the sofa and you can feel that 2.6Kg on your knees after a while.

And making space for it isn’t really a problem. You certainly won’t be ashamed to have it sitting on a table in your living room, as the dark red model we used was well styled with a slim base and screen, attractive wavy-line pattern and georgous colour. Close the lid and it’s got a shine that’ll need dusting occasionally but won’t make it look like an ungly lump you feel the need to hide.

Should you decide to pop it in a bag and take it with you, you’ll be getting around four to four-and-a-half hours of battery life based on our standard usage.

Certainly enough to handle some business before you reach another charge point or while away a decent proportion of that long-haul flight. We’d suggest packing that duster as well, mind – to get rid of the smear of your fingerprints and keep it looking as pretty as it can.

Overall, this might be an expensive machine when you stack it up next to some of its competitors, but crucially you won’t regret paying out the extra sheckles.

It’s perhaps not the ideal instrument to show off video or powerpoint to an audience in a well-lit room, but as a personal computer it hits every target you’ll set it.
