The LEC-5520 is suitable for intelligent transport applications in fleet management, entertainment, and security, says Lanner. For example, vehicle tracking is enabled via the GPS module, and the video subsystem supports video surveillance from up to four cameras, says the company.

Other touted capabilities include the ability to display updated information to a fleet driver, provide entertainment to car, bus, and train passengers, and send back information to headquarters via 3G.

The LEC-5520 includes an onboard H.264 codec chip for video capture and compression. Video is captured through four BNC analog inputs, “allowing the use of cheaper and more reliable analog video cameras,” says Lanner. HDMI and VGA video outputs are said to be supplied, as well as an RCA audio input, and microphone and line-out ports.

Lanner chose the 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 for the LEC-5520 instead of one of the newer, more power efficient “Pineview” Atom processors. However, power consumption is still low enough to enable a fanless system, says Lanner.

The computer ships with 1GB of DDR2 SDRAM, expandable to 2GB, and a CompactFlash slot is available for memory card expansion, says the company. A 2.5-inch hard disk drive (HDD) bay and a SATA port are supplied for more substantial video storage needs.
3G, WiFi, and GPS

The LEC-5520 is equipped with a gigabit Ethernet port, as well as 3G, 802.11b/g/n, and GPS wireless communications, says the company. Four USB 2.0 ports, two high speed serial UARTs, an RS-485 serial port, and alarm/relay I/O are also said to be provided.

Offering a wide power input range (10-36V), the computers runs on dual power inputs via DC jack and Phoenix contact. The computer supplies a 12V DC, one-Amp power output to drive peripherals such as cameras and sensors, says Lanner. The system is said to support temperatures of 32 to 113 deg. F (0 to 45 deg. C).

An SDK and reference software are supplied for Linux and Windows, including features for alarm I/O, streaming, RS-485 control, and display, says the company. Windows users can call upon the included EyeShot 2000 Control Panel software for camera control, PTZ, file storage and streaming, says Lanner.

Critical computer enhancements

June 30th, 2010

The buying of a brand new Personal computer is an significant decision in this hugely wired, technological era of ours. Even before you’ve even gotten it home and out of the box, something newer and swifter has struck the market. It makes sense to do a bit of planning and get a system that will remain useful and suitable with regard to your personal demands for at least a few years. In addition to the correct care and routine maintenance, updates exist that will increase the lifetime of your system. These include upgrading the CPU, memory, graphics card and more.

The first and most vital upgrade for any PC is Random Access Memory. Nothing boosts functionality like putting in all the RAM that the computer can handle. Just be mindful that 32-bit operating systems can just address 4 GB of memory, so if you want to go above that you’ll need to turn to a 64-bit platform. Another easy up grade is the Graphics Card. They’re a breeze to add as they simply plug into any PCI Express slot on the motherboard and can drastically increase media and graphics rendering.

In addition, changing the original hard drive to something quicker with more space is a usually a great idea as hard drives or HDDs are fairly low-cost these days. Set up guides with all the essential devices to upgrade are readily available via a wide range of vendors such as Seagate, Western Digital and OCZ. Although much more expensive than traditional disk drives, solid state drives have the benefits of using less power, being less noisy and better, as well as being more shock proof. While you’re playing with the hard drive, you might also contemplate grabbing a Blu-ray player for media.
They’re not that costly and can be had for £100 or so.

If you have made the decision to upgrade to a new, more potent graphics card, a second monitor is the best way to exploit the extra rendering potential. Two screens support more successful multitasking and productiveness and give you a lot more room to work. Like almost every other component, monitors are becoming more of a bargain every day and a decently specced screen shouldn’t run more than £150.

Last but not least, the ultimate upgrade of any personal computer is motherboards and the CPU. This is usually the best course of action for aged hardware that’s really beginning to show it’s age. Today’s CPUs from AMD and Intel are very simple to change out and the speed enhancements are absolutely worth it.

Nvidia geforce gtx 480 graphics card, best PC gaming video card

June 30th, 2010

Nvidia’s internal name for the GeForce 400 series architecture is “Fermi”, named for Enrico Fermi the Italian Physicist who was critical in the development of the nuclear reactor. The name is appropriate because this video card series represents the state of the art technology in PC graphics rendering. With 16 Streaming Multiprocessors, each capable of 32 simultaneous single-precision operations, 64k of on-board cache / shared memory and 768k of L2 cache this processor goes beyond the merely impressive to deliver sheer jaw dropping performance. Any serious PC gamer will want to get their hands on one of these cards.

Previously high performance users largely had been using cards using Nvidia’s G80 architecture, like the Tesla series of general purpose GPU’s. Fermi graphics cards represents the next evolution in cutting edge performance and delivers even more power. The 400 series begins a new age in performance video card architecture and what home computer graphics cards are capable of. Available with anywhere from 1GB to 4GB of RAM for each of the GDDR5 controllers, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 400 Series Graphics Cards will offer high performance users up to 6GB total on board memory dedicated to graphics processing. Nvidia has taken their previous breakthroughs in video processing architecture and used them as a building block to get to the next level with the 400 series.

The 400 series is also the first chip from graphics card guru Nvidia to work with Microsoft’s new DirectX 11. This new system paves the way for a new generations of hyper-realistic games and extreme 3d rendering. Taking lighting and shaders to the next level, the 3 dimensional environments which can be rendered on the fly by Nvidia’s GeForce 400 series are simply breathtaking. Nvidia’s new architecture also includes better support for C++ programming language and Microsoft’s Visual Studio. In brief, this means the architecture is more straightforward for computer programmers to get maximum performance from.

One of the first of the new line of video cards released with this new architecture is the Nvidia GeForce GTX 480. This card offers a core clock speed of 700MHz and a shader clock speed of 1401 MHz, plus 1.5GB of on board video RAM. This unit, along with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470, is just the tip of the iceberg for the new architecture. Nvidia has a long history of pushing the envelope with their graphics processing technologies and while cards like the GTX 480 blow away the graphical capabilities of cards that have come before, later models in the GeForce 400 Series will deliver performance even beyond that. More. Better. Faster. That’s what the Nvidia GeForce 400 Series Graphics Cards delivers.

Consumers spending more on accessories than pcs, says study

June 30th, 2010

U.S. consumers are spending more on PC accessories and peripherals than on the computers themselves. What’s more, an increasing amount of this aftermarket money is being spent on better graphics cards, more memory and additional storage.

For every dollar spent on a PC last year, consumers spent an average of $1.05 on software and hardware designed to enhance or soup up the performance of their desktop and notebook purchase, according to a study just released by market researcher International Data Corp.

This may not seem like much of a bump, although overall aftermarket spending is up from $.087 per dollar the previous year, and will ultimately add up to at least $28.6B in PC performance-boosting products and services this year, notes IDC.

Security and anti-spam software remained the top buys for most consumers, although a rise in the use of media creation products and media rich activities continues to drive demand for more capable graphics cards and more storage.

“The need for solutions to enhance user experience, improve productivity, and secure users’ computing environment mean that the accessories market will continue to expand going forward,” says David Daoud, a research director with IDC’s personal computing group.

Although online is a popular option for those seeking aftermarket bargains, brick and mortar companies like electronics retailer Best Buy is presently dominating the PC and accessories market – indicating that consumers may like to ‘touch and feel’ before buying, or at least talk to someone about their impending purchase.

The Selling Beyond the Box: What’s Inside the PC Shopping Cart multi-client survey, IDC’s fourth in this area, also found that U.S. small businesses (less than 100 employees) spent $2.7 billion on accessories and aftermarket products, accounting for nearly 24% of their computer shopping budget.

The study points out that PC users are also quickly moving toward a Web-centric environment, with cloud-based activities on the rise. In contrast, productivity-based activities have become a secondary focus among consumers, IDC notes.
