How to save time when testing the computer: what should and should not do?

May 29th, 2010

It is extremely important to remember everything that needs to be done in testing the computer because the right attitude to testing will save you money.

Below there are the stages of testing that should be followed and what you should ignore, or you will have a lot of troubles.

First, take time to view the stages to be followed.

Ensure that the driver of your hardware devices does not become obsolete, and that the latest versions are downloaded and installed on your computer. Please do not regret your time to visit the sites of manufacturers of video cards, sound cards, motherboard and other hardware. Check the latest driver updates on the manufacturers’ websites.

Check whether all cables and wires are plugged into the sockets. This is a very important stage of validation, because plugы tend to wear out over time and cause problems.

If you have recently worked on the computer and noticed that something was wrong at work, you should check whether all the wires are connected correctly. Make sure that you do not accidentally abusive wires, and thus do not violate the connection.

Do not forget about preventive measures and to empty regularly your computer. It would be ideal to open the system unit and remove all the accumulated dust from the motherboard and other parts.

Dust and dirt have a high thermal conductivity and can lead to overheating of the computer. Note the vents on the back of the case. If they had gathered dust, remove it.

The best way to clear all the chips in the system unit from the dust is blowing by air. Devices for blowing are sold in all computer stores.

Please make sure that you do not electrostatic materials before starting to work with the internal parts of the computer and touch the new chips.

Please do not ignore this advice. Otherwise, it will be offensively to buy a new memory and damage it even before the installation.

It is equally important to remember that what you should not do when testing a computer. These stages are presented below.

Do not allow your computer to overheat. Each part of the system will generate heat. So make sure that the whole system is well ventilated. If you are installing two additional devices, think about setting at least one additional cooler.

It is not difficult to install coolers, and efforts to install the cooler will not be wasted. Coolers are accompanied by instructions that is very easy to be understood. It is the best to have maximum two (at most, three) additional devices in the system.

Do not use a brush if you want to clean the chip and motherboard from dust. Brushes create static electricity and can only do harm. If you have no device to blow, do not start cleaning until you get it.

Do not download or install files from the Internet without first checking for viruses. This also applies to files obtained from file sharing networks.

Learn how to inspect a computer with great caution, and you’ll be rewarded in the sense that you can determine the cause of the problem and not create unnecessary troubles.

Computer help experts suggest some instructions following which you can restore your data. These directions are given for a hard drive with a connection of 3. 5″ IDE. You will need to have a USB to IDE adapter. You need to refer to the manufacturer handbook on connecting and powering your devices if you have any sort of different drive and adapter. You can follow the instruction to restore data from a virus hit hard drive and if you face any difficulty then you can call any time to 24×7 computer help desk. Ensure that you have powered off the power cords. Computer help experts now suggest opening the virus hit computer tower. Remove the virus affected hard drive ensure that you have minutely noticed how you have removed this because you will have to put it in the same way. Now plug the right outlet on the adapter to the hard drives’ IDE/SATA/PATA outlet. The white power cord which is from the main tower to the hard drive is needed to be plugged on. This step is vital if you fail to generate power to the hard drive, the good computer won’t be able to read the information. As a result the good computer will not be able to recognize it as a storage device. The tech support experts suggest you to plug the power cord to the AC that came from the USB adapter. Now it is time to plug the power into the virus hit computer tower . The other end of the virus hit computer tower power cord is needed to be plugged to an AC outlet and now you need to turn it on. This will generate power to the white plug to the hard drive. Now turn on the good computer which has the Recovery software installed in it. Plug the USB end from the USB to IDE adapter to the good computer that has the Recovery software installed. Now the computer will recognize the hard drive as a storage device. Now run the recovery software and make sure you have properly selected files you want to retrieve in the hard drive. Intel to provide hardware support for webm

May 28th, 2010

Intel has plans for supporting the hardware acceleration of WebM videos. This news was confirmed by an Intel executive who said that the technology will be available on an Atom CE Systems-on-Chips(SOC) if VP8 gains popularity.

This Atom SOC chip can be used on TV’s and set top boxes to provide Internet connectivity and streaming videos to these devices. Logitech poses as one prospective buyer of this new chip as it is gearing up for the launch of its Google TV set top boxes this fall. The Google TV platform will perform even better with this technology and Google can significantly cut down costs by offloading a greater part of the rendering job to the client end.

The SOC available as an Atom CE4100 chip already packs a GPU, a CPU, an audio processor, a cryptography acceleration and USB connectivity.

The decoding of VP8 is still possible without this chip by using alternate software solutions. Though, this hardware support makes the CPU more responsive and allows a generic video decoding which support many popular formats.

The CE4100 already supports DivX and Xvid and H.264 which are popular and are in wide usage. Support for VP8 gives consumers more options in choosing their products and gives a better user experience.

Independent hardware stores stay personal

May 28th, 2010

Nearly 30 years after Home Depot first opened in Florida, small independent hardware and lumber outlets continue to thrive in the shadow of big box home improvement stores.
Some say they endure due largely to an arsenal of survival strategies cultivated through the years, which include personalized service, customer recognition and product specialization.

It’s a playbook many small businesses can adopt. We know most of our customers by first name,” said Jim Shoureas, manager at Belzer’s Hardware and Housewares in Boca Raton. And we go the extra mile to serve them.”That extra effort has often included helping elderly customers set up a new generator at home or fixing a walker in need of repair.

For Greg Heinmiller, Belzer’s personal touch is a stand out. They’ve always had good service and one-on-one help here,” said Heinmiller, 62, a Boca custom furniture maker and Belzer’s regular for 35 years. My Dad loves coming here … the big box stores are too big and overwhelming for him,he said on a recent visit.

The 7,000-square-foot store at 3198 N. Federal Highway has been a local institution for more than 50 years, although new owners assumed control in the 1990s.In addition to selling hardware and household goods, Belzer’s offers lamp and electric shaver repairs, key duplication and knife sharpening services. It also has a hobby center.

We’re doing well,” Shoureas said. “Like any business we’ve had our ups and downs, but we prepare for them.Keeping customers’ needs in sharp focus is also a top priority at Sheridan Lumber in Hollywood.

You not only have to know your customer, but you have to know who your customers are,” co-owner Frank Vidal said. That includes knowing how much time to devote to a potential customer to uncover his or her needs, while being mindful that repeat customers also are waiting for service in the store.

Choosing the right products and vendors is also critical for a smaller independent, as a misstep could not only damage the retailer’s reputation, but possibly sink the business. To survive the tough times, Sheridan has managed to keep costs low, while still offering quality products that guarantee no customer backlash, Vidal said.

While some independents are staying the course, others have succumbed to the double whammy of the housing bust and recession. The number of hardware stores in North America fell in 2009 to 19,975 from 20,050 in 2008. This year numbers are forecast to fall further to 19,925, according to the North American Retail Hardware Association in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Cleaning Your Computer Hardware

May 28th, 2010

omputers, as appose to other electric or electronic devices, are not maintenance free. Quite the reverse, it occasionally needs hardware cleaning. This will not only give your computer top performance, but will also prevent many unforeseen computer breakdowns,

The obvious reason is, after we use the computer for 6 – 12 months depending on the environment, it will have a layer of dust sitting on it. This happens even when we position our computer in a clean room. The computer parts in my own house always collect a fair amount of dust.

It would, therefore, be advisable to give your computer a clean up twice a year or so. But before we do it, we must do some preparation. First, get a piece of paper, a pen, screw driver, brush and a small can of spray that clean the metal parts of the electronic circuit.

When we are ready, unplug the computer completely and take only the case out to a well ventilated area. Open the case and take note of what you will be doing below (This is important to help you put it back correctly).

1. Unplug all the devices from the mains supply. These include hard disk, floppy disk, DVD Rom, CPU fan, and the main power supply plug from the main board.

2. Take the main board battery off.

3. Unscrew all the attached cards like Monitor, LAN, Modem, USB, Sound, CCTV, if there is any (the newer main mother board now has most of these collectively assembled on the main board) and pull them out carefully.

4. Use the brush to dust off all the computer parts.

5. Erase the bronze color stripe part of the cards. Rub them hard until they shine.

6. Spray clean the main board, IC or chip spikes, and the needle like metal parts of the hard disk, floppy disk and DVD ROM.

7. Spray also all the metal parts that protrude out from the main board at the back of the computer case. (Do not wipe with paper or cloth if you over spray as it may cause damage to it. Just let it dry ).

8. Put back all the cards and screw tight.

9. Plug back all power supply lines.

10. Insert back main board battery.

11. Close the case and take to join back to the monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Few words of caution:

1. Please make sure you write down the details when you unplug or unscrew things. You will need them when you put things back.

2. Do it gently and patiently. Do not force your way through in anyof the steps.

3. You know how to reset your CMOS-BIOS after you put back the main board battery. (You may bypass steps 2 & 10 if you do not. But be careful not to spray right on the battery to prevent short circuit)

This will restore your computer hardware back to its original new look when you first bought it. Performance will drastically improve also comparing it to before the cleaning was done. It will enhance further with some adjustment to the software.

Lenovo tablets and smartbooks delayed for Android

May 28th, 2010

A pair of the most-anticipated mobile computers from this year’s CES show were Lenovo’s U1 Hybrid and Skylight smartbook. Both ran a custom widget-based Linux OS (sometimes also called Skylight), and were powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU. But since then, both devices seem to have fallen off the map, and now we think we know why. Both systems are getting a software overhaul, jumping to the Android platform in search of better performance and more usability.

We’ve been hearing for some time that both systems were being tweaked far beyond their original expected Spring 2010 debuts, and more recently, that Google’s Android was being considered as a replacement OS. That now appears to be Lenovo’s official line, as we’ve heard, and other news sites are also reporting, that the versions of the Skylight and U1 Hybrid we got our hands on at CES will never see the light of day. Our understanding is that the Skylight will almost definitely be reworked with Android, while the future of the U1 Hybrid, with its clever detachable tablet screen, is more up in the air.

Back in January, we got to use both devices, and while we liked the hardware and design, the software experience was definitely lacking. The interfaces looked great, but performance was slow and stuttery. A the time we chalked it up to the devices’ early prototype status, but apparently Lenovo was never able to get them to work as smoothly as expected. And with the Apple iPad redefining consumer expectations of tablet and app-driven devices, the bar was set even higher.

What this means for the future of the consumer tablet market and the still largely hypothetical smartbook market remains to be seen. We still think both systems have a lot of potential.
