This Day in History: 3DO Quits the Hardware Business

April 29th, 2010

On this day in 1997, The 3DO Company officially left the hardware business, focusing instead on multi-platform game development.

First sold in Ocober of 1993, the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer was a fairly powerful console for its time, and the first designed from the ground up to take advantage of the CD-ROM rather than ROM-based cartridges.

Lock-IT USB memory with pin entry hardware authentication

April 29th, 2010

The portable convenience of Flash memory has its security down side. Whether the information contained on a drive consists of military or State secrets or is personal or commercial data, if the drive is lost or stolen varying degrees of panic ensue. Rather than risking potential memory stick security breach from reliance on unsafe software-based methods, the LOK-IT flash drive from Systematic Development employs a hardware-based PIN system that needs to be unlocked before any data can be accessed.

The platform independent LOK-IT secure Flash drive benefits from a four tier process to safeguard the precious data contained within. First a user will need to press the key button, then enter a seven to 15 digit PIN password on the self-contained, on-board PIN pad to unlock the drive. It’s similar in principle to the Flash Drive Lock featured in Gizmag last year, but offers much better hardware authentication.

Surprise! Apple has another blowout quarter

April 28th, 2010

Apple is getting monotonous—in ways that are no doubt delighting investors.

As has been the case for the past several quarters, iPhone and Mac sales propelled Apple to dazzling financial results in its fiscal second quarter. In its quarterly earnings call, Apple said iPhone sales more than doubled during the quarter to 8.57 million units, while Mac sales were up 33 percent to 2.9 million units.

Although iPod sales were nearly flat at 10.9 million units, the iPhone and Mac numbers allowed Apple to once again proclaim Q2—which ended March 31—as its best non-holiday quarter ever.

Apple said its profit rose nearly 90 percent to $3.07 billion during the quarter, compared to $1.62 billion in the year-ago quarter. Apple earned $3.33 per share during the quarter, compared to $ 1.79 per share during last year’s Q2. Revenue was up nearly 50 percent to $13.5 billion.

Apple hasn’t yet begun reporting revenue from sales of the iPad, which began on April 2. Oppenheimer said in the coming quarter iPad sales will be broken out in a similar fashion as the iPhone, as a line item that includes revenue from unit sales and related accessories.

In a Q&A session after the call, Tim Cook, COO, Apple, was asked to comment on the iPad shortage. “It’s a good kind of issue to have,” Cook said in response. “Demand in the U.S. is much, much stronger than we predicted, and we regrettably had to push out the international launch to get enough Wi-Fi units in the U.S.,” Cook said. “We’re adding capacity and we’ll see where it goes.”

What is Apple doing with all this money? Squirreling it away, apparently. Peter Oppenheimer, CFO, Apple, said the company had $41.7 billion in cash at the end of Q2, compared to $39.8 billion at the end of Q1.

Apple paid $275 million to acquire mobile advertising firm Quattro Wireless in January, which will power Apple’s forthcoming iAd service. But Oppenheimer said “preservation of capital” is Apple’s investment priority right now due to the still-uncertain economy.

For Apple’s upcoming June quarter, the company expects revenue between $13 and $13.4 billion, compared to $9.7 billion it realized in Q3 last year. Earnings per share are forecast in a range between $2.28 and $2.39, compared to the $2.01 Apple racked up in the year-ago quarter.

Gross margin is forecast to drop from 41.7 percent last year to 36 percent, due in part to stock based compensation but also due to Apple’s aggressive iPad pricing. Apple sees the iPad as a new category of device and Cook suggested that its pricing reflects a desire to get out in front of the coming wave of tablets from competitors.

“We think the market for the iPad will be large and we want to capitalize on our first mover advantage.

Aten introduces a new 4 input/output hdmi matrix switch

April 28th, 2010

Aten International, a leading designer and manufacturer of advanced connectivity solutions, announced a new 4×4 HDMI matrix switch VM0404H. It provides a convenient system to route high definition video and audio from any of four HDMI sources to any of four HDMI displays.

VM0404H’s VanCryst professional AV solutions product line allows consumers to easily connect up to four HDMI devices such as HD camcorders, satellite receivers, HD-DVD players, Blu-ray players, home theater PCs, streaming media players, or gaming consoles. The four inputs can then be switched to any combination of up to four HDMI monitors, displays, projectors or TVs simultaneously. The matrix switch can be cascaded with other VM0404Hs in order to provide up to 64 HDMI sources or displays.

Its remote control and front panel push-buttons allow users to cycle through and select the HDMI sources and displays, while its front panel LEDs indicate the source device for each display at a glance. The switch also has a built-in bi-directional RS-232 serial interface, which allows system control through either a high-end controller, or a PC, or a home automation or home theater software package. It enables fast and easy remote automated HDMI source to port switching controlled via the RS-232 serial port.

Gigabyte has the POW-ERRR! Via USB.

April 28th, 2010

Gigabyte has the power of Greyskull USB, as it recently demonstrated the usefulness of triple-AMP’d USB ports – both USB 2 and 3 – as well as specific pin-outs that will enable you to charge your phone, iPod or flash new iPad even while your PC is asleep.

The iPad is particularly tricky to power because it can draw more than the 500mA of power standard USB 2 ports provide – which means that even when plugged into a PC, when the iPad is switched on, it may not actually be charging.

With recent its motherboards (listed here) Gigabyte has increased the power of its USB ports three fold to over 9000! 1500mA for USB 2 and 2700mA for USB 3.

In addition, the special red USB pin-out for new boards provide the hyped-up power to the front USB ports of your case, and enable charging while the PC is off.

There are some limitations though; only three devices can be charged at once and for some phones the PC needs to be on while the initial connection is made, but will keep charging after it’s been turned off. Gigabyte was also keen to point out that the quality of PSU and PC cabling makes a huge difference – while it’s beefed up the copper traces between the 5V standby from the ATX socket and the USB ports on the board, the PSU’s capacity to provide enough amps without dropping voltage is critical for this setup to work.

In addition, for those who want to use the front USB ports for higher powered devices, be wary that many cases use cheaper aluminium wiring, not copper, which has a higher resistance and causes voltage drops.

Gigabyte told us it has also improved its motherboard design since the introduction of USB 3 on its boards late last year by including a single power fuse on each individual USB port, rather than one per pair as is more common. Apparently despite the 2x cost increase, this investment is absorbed by Gigabyte because it ultimately lowers RMA rates, and improves long term profitability.

Since its introduction three years ago, this strategy that has apparently suited the company very well as it stated to bit-tech that its RMA rate is “half the industry average” of a single-digit percentage (we’re unable to be more accurate than that, unfortunately).
