Dell to enter managed print services market

March 31st, 2010

Dell could start offering managed print services later this year as it tries to extend its reach in the printing and imaging market, a company executive said on Wednesday.

The company is laying down the framework to enter the market by releasing enterprise printer hardware around which it could provide services, said Donald Heath, senior product manager in Dell’s printing and imaging division. The company’s next step would be to unify printing hardware and provide managed services to reduce the cost per page printed, Heath said.

“We’re already doing a lot of managed seats, and offering  would be a natural evolution,” Heath said. Dell has made a recent push into managed-services offerings for large enterprises, acquiring services company Perot Systems in November for around US$3.9 billion in cash. Dell in December integrated Perot Systems’ operations into a new unit called Dell Services.

Dell’s current offerings are mostly geared toward hardware and supplies, but an increased focus is being placed on controlling the document flow in organizations, Heath said. The company is providing hardware and software improvements that could ease the management of printers and digitization, and the printing of documents, Heath said. Dell is also evaluating services offerings from Perot.

Dell in the coming months will release a software package to unify printer infrastructures in enterprises and will also incorporate OpenManage Printer Manager software into the Dell Management Console, which brings device and task management in server environments under a single application. Dell is also embedding Java capabilities in printers, which will provide the capability to install custom software on printers depending on specific needs. The company earlier this week also released new enterprise printers focused on cost and print speed, including the 5535dn laser printer, which can print 55 pages per minute.

The managed-print services market is currently dominated by Xerox and Hewlett-Packard, which also offer document management services. HP in September formed a new print services division to combine software and services around printing hardware. The same month, Xerox announced it would acquire services company Affiliated Computer Services for $6.4 billion to expand its document and business process management offerings.

Dell will be entering a lucrative market with a small number of players, and gaining a small market share could generate good revenue, said Charles King, president at Pund-IT. Dell may try to gain control of the growing amount of data within enterprises through printing, imaging and scanning services and document management, he said.

“The sheer volume of information that businesses are creating, accumulating and storing … continues to increase. That’s not going to slow down,” King said. There will be an increased demand for services to manage those documents, which could blur the line between document digitization and management.

The acquisition of Perot Systems is a nice beachhead for Dell to enter printing services and document management, especially in niche markets such as health care, King said. Perot in 2007 acquired the consulting group within Meditech, which offers software and consulting services to move paper medical records to electronic records. Dell also last week announced a medical document management product called Medical Archiving that includes a PowerEdge server to access, store and distribute medical records.

But for other niche markets, Dell may need to partner with small companies with domain expertise to develop software that could match its server, storage and printing and imaging hardware, King said. It cannot develop homegrown hardware and software by itself for all markets, and customers like choice, King said.

Dual screen thinking required for endgame fractured soul

March 31st, 2010

There have already been a couple of DS games that made full use of the hardware’s two screens in an imaginative way.

EnjoyUP’s Chronos Twin came out back in 2007, while Konami hooked up with student outfit Intrinsic Games for Reflections in 2009.

Neither title completely pinned down the flexibility of playing on this or that screen however, which leaves us with the hope that Australian developer Endgame Studios may go one better with its forthcoming Fractured Soul.

It’s an action platformer that you play across both DS screens, toggling between the two versions of your character as best suits your immediate situation.

For example, some levels will see one screen underwater or experiencing different friction or gravity.

Fractured Soul will feature five worlds, plus two side-scrolling shooter-’em up sections.
You can get some idea of how the game will play in the following video.

IBM unveils gobal entrepreneur Initiative to drive smarter planet opportunities

March 31st, 2010

IBM has launched a new initiative designed to help startups bring new ideas to market in today’s less than bullish global economy. The IBM Global Entrepreneur initiative provides start-ups with no-charge access to industry-specific technologies in a cloud computing environment. Under the new program, IBM will provide access to its’ Research community as well as sales, marketing and technical skills.
“It’s obvious in most economies around the world, most entrepreneurs are having a tough time right now,” said Mike Riegel, Vice President, ISV and Developer Relations, IBM Software. At the same time there is a lot of interest related to our Smarter Planet initiative.”

Riegel said that while IBM’s venture capital group has extensive experience in working with startups — over 1500 in the last 10 years — the entrepreneurs wanted a more formal way to engage with IBM.

Riegel said entrepreneurs wanted assistance in three basic areas.

“They wanted to leverage our software and hardware platform to create a differentiated product. They wanted access to our expertise and our people — including product managers to help develop go to market strategies. And they wanted help with promotion and visibility, especially when entering new markets.”

These requests are met in the new initiative, Riegel said.

“The new program is geared around those key needs,” he said. “It provides a formal way for startups to access all those key things.”

There are five core elements in the initiative, Riegel said.

“The first is no-charge access to our software portfolio, through a cloud computing environment.”

“The second is one-on-one access to our IBM Research scientists, especially around Smarter Planet, to develop new technologies.”

The third element is access to dedicated IBM product managers to assist both in product development and in developing go-to-market strategies.

The fourth element is the ability to attend new IBM SmartCamp mentoring and networking workshops with VC firms, government leaders, academics, and industry experts at the global network of 40 IBM Innovation Centers to build business and go-to-market plans. Seven of these workshops have been announced for this year, and the winners of these seven events will go to the final event in Dublin, Ireland.

The final element is the ability to tap a new social networking community on IBM developerWorks which has just gone live, and will enable them to connect with other entrepreneurs and IT professionals

“The idea is to develop the technology, but even more importantly, to develop the business, and turn it into a successful business model,” Riegel said. “We have the VCs and the experts to do this.”

As an example of how he expected the initiative to work, Riegel cited Treemetrics, an Irish-based software company which developed a new way to optimize forestry/lumber recovery.

“Before, timber companies didn’t know what they had until the cut was finished,” Riegel said. “Treemetrics’ software can forecast the quality and the quantity of the timber sale prior to the cut. It lets them plan in advance to recover that forest area, so it allows companies to be more profitable as well as environmentally sound.”

As part of this program, IBM is collaborating with 19 global industry and technology associations to identify and connect local start-ups to the initiative through IBM SmartCamps and forums at IBM Innovation Centers throughout 2010. The associations include:

SD Forum, TiE Silicon Valley, Mass Tech Leadership Council, TiE Austin, and MassInno in the United States.
National Consortium of University Entrepreneurs, Cmypitch.com, and SE Business Innovation & Growth in the United Kingdom as well as Enterprise Ireland, the Irish Software Association in Ireland and SeedCamp.
Israeli Venture Association, SvoiBiz, Office of the Chief Scientist, and StartUpmania, in Israel.
TiE, and Indian Angel Network in India.
Journées de L’entrepreneur and ADEN (Association for Development of Digital Economy) in France. There are three criteria for start-ups to participate in the IBM Global Entrepreneur Initiative. The company must be privately-held It must have been in business less than three years. It must also be actively developing software aligned to IBM’s Smarter Planet focus areas.
Riegel did suggest however, that IBM is not focused on splitting hairs about how some companies might qualify in the case, for instance, of an established VAR engaged in software development which might split off a separate ISV company.

“We know resellers and ISVs have blended,” he said. “We are not as worried about what they call themselves. We want firms that are driving innovation and key solutions within the Smarter Planet initiatives.”

“The focus is around the quality of the innovation,” Riegel added. “We expect to work with hundreds of companies in this space, not thousands. The breakthrough concepts where we can really drive innovation, that’s what we are looking for.

Venture capital firm doubles iPhone OS iFund to $200 million

March 31st, 2010

The announcement is centered around the iPad, as more than 20 iFund-supported applications are currently under development for Apple’s touchscreen device. The firm said Wednesday it believes the iPad “will lead the next wave of innovation in mobile computing.”

Apple helped Kleiner Perkins establish the fund in 2008, which is used to provide early financial support for promising new companies using the iPhone OS software development kit. The venture capital outfit revealed that the original $100 million iFund is now fully committed across 14 companies, and iFund companies have been supported by an additional $330 million from follow-on investors.

“Welcome to the brave new post-PC era where a swoosh of fluidity replaces the traditional mouse-bound GUI, said KPCB Partner John Doerr. “A new, truly revolutionary platform is rare, and a prize for entrepreneurs. We expect all ventures to have an iPad strategy. We will fund many more ventures for iPad, and the iFund will accelerate their success.”

The first run of funding reportedly found great success, with iFund ventures achieving more than $100 million of 2010 mobile revenue, more than 100 million aggregate mobile downloads, and 18 total titles reaching top-10 sales on the App Store.

Companies funded by the iFund include GOGII, which has seen 5.5 million users and 2 billion text messages sent in its textPlus application; ngmoco, which has games installed on over one-third of iPhone OS devices; and Shazam, which has attained 50 million worldwide users tagging over 2 million songs per day.

“We’re ecstatic to be doubling down on the iFund after two short years,” said Matt Murphy, KPCB partner and leader of the iFund. “The success of the App Store and its impact on consumers has been 10 times faster and bigger than we expected. Kleiner Perkins and iFund companies have enjoyed an incredibly helpful and unwavering partner in Apple.”

Earlier this month, an analysis of developers on the App Store found that one in five are startup companies, suggesting that Apple’s platform for the iPhone, iPod touch and forthcoming iPad presents a level playing field.

Apple has pitched the launch of the iPad as a “whole new gold rush” for developers, as the device and its 9.7-inch screen will run existing App Store software as well as new applications designed specifically for the hardware and its larger touchscreen. First released in January, the iPhone 3.2 beta software development kit allows developers to create iPad-specific software.

The App Store has proven successful for a variety of companies, from upstart developers such as Tapulous, which earns nearly $1 million per month, to established companies like personal navigation provider TomTom, which recorded more than 100,000 sales of its GPS application for the iPhone. In January, Apple revealed that App Store downloads had topped 3 billion less than 18 months after it first opened.

Crysis 2 has the best graphics you have ever seen

March 31st, 2010

It’s no secret that the original Crysis launched with stunning graphics for its time and it surely set the bar for future hardware-crippling games. Now, only a few years later, Crytek pledges to raise the standard for awe-inspiring visuals with Crysis’ successor, claiming that Crysis 2 has the best graphics in the history of video games.
The developer admittedly faces some new obstacles in getting CRYEngine 3 to run on consoles. “We know [developing for PS3] is a big challenge, but we’re happy to accept it,” said Crytek executive producer Nathan Camarillo. He also added that Crysis 2 won’t just look pretty, as much attention is also being placed on gameplay elements.
n addition to setting the graphical benchmark, Crytek’s upcoming title will bring “great gameplay, some engaging fiction, challenging AI, killer weaponry, and a complete gaming experience like no other.” The game is set in New York City and is reportedly due around September of this year.
