Sony throw in the towel ps3 production halted

March 31st, 2010

Just as the company was regaining momentum in the video game market, Sony has admitted defeat, halting production and sale of the PlayStation 3 console and moving video game development studios to new projects.

With the PS3 Slim hitting the market with a reduced price and new exclusive games such as Uncharted 2: Amongst Thieves, God of War III and Heavy Rain all garnering praise and high sales volumes, you would think things are starting to pick-up for the long-time video game console manufacturer.

Blu-Ray has won the high-definition disc format war, and Sony has just revealed its plans for entering the motion controller space with the PlayStation Move controller.

But it seems under unrelenting pressure from rivals Nintendo and Microsoft, Sony has decided to cut its losses and halt production of the PlayStation 3 console.

Sony spokesperson Garath Norbert told a press conference in Sydney today: “After much consideration, Sony Corporation has decided to immediately cease production, distribution and sale of the PS3 console. Sony Corp has made the decision to shift focus game development, both hardware and software into what will be the future of interactive entertainment”

“From today, “ Norbert continued “Sony development houses Santa Monica [God of War series]and Naughty Dog [Uncharted] will shift resources into developing new and exciting IP for the PlayStation Home environment”

“Which leads me into the exciting announcement that PlayStation Home, formally only accessible through the PlayStation Network, will now be fully integrated with other social media platforms such as Facebook and MySpace. This will mean a whole new audience exposed to the joys and experiences found in the online world of PlayStation Home, til now only available to PS3 owners, from today, the first of April.

India to witness exponential computer growth official

March 31st, 2010

India is about to witness an explosion in the spread of personal computers and Internet connectivity, visiting Minister of State for IT and Communications Sachin Pilot said.
“An exponential growth will happen in PC penetration and Internet penetration” in the Asian giant, which is already a major player in global information technology and outsourcing, the Indian official told the Indian-American Chamber of Commerce.
The service sector currently accounts for 57 percent of India’s gross domestic product, most of it involving information technology (IT), which over the past few years has been growing at an annual pace of nine percent, said Pilot, 34.
In 2010, India’s IT sector is expected to hit double-digit growth, said India’s ambassador to Washington, Meera Shankar.
Between now and 2014, Pilot said, the IT sector in India will be needing hardware equipment worth an estimated 400 billion dollars.
“We need semi-conductors, simple factories to feed the domestic market,” he added.
At present only eight percent of Indian households have access to a PC, he said, while mobile telephones have experienced enormous growth, going from 1.4 units per 100 people in 1995 to 51 per 100 in 2010, including 140 percent in big cities.
India is also working to extend broadband to 250,000 villages — out of more than 600,000 — and to provide widespread banking services via mobile telephones, Pilot said.
Asked about US computer giant Dell’s reported intention to move its manufacturing facilities from China to India, Pilot only could confirm that he met with Dell officials last week, without providing further details.

Toshiba crams 1tb into your pocket

March 31st, 2010

On Sunday Toshiba revealed its solution to ease consumer burdens of losing “digital memories” by offering its new line of Canvio pocket-sized external drives. Toshiba said the Canvio drives are an easy-to-use backup solution that offers storage capacities of up to 1 TB. Surprisingly, the company spent more time coughing up data loss statistics than promoting hardware details surrounding the new Canvio line.

“Women, in particular, are concerned about the security of family memories– 78 percent of women respondents indicated they are primarily responsible for maintaining family records and memories to pass down to future generations,” the company said. “These “chief memory officers” say that family videos and photos, as well as ancestor photos, are the most precious memories they have.”

On a hardware level, Toshiba touts the 6-ounce Canvio as smaller than a postcard. The new line will also come in five colors: Liquid Blue, Komodo Green, Rocket Red, Raven Black, and Satin Silver. All five will be preloaded with Windows-based NTI Backup Now EZ software that features “extensive backup options, advanced restore functionalities, and an ability to overwrite specific original files.” The drives are Windows 7, Vista, and XP compatible, and connect via a USB 2.0 port.

As for storage capacities, Toshiba is offering four variants: 500 GB ($119.99), 640 GB ($139.99), 750 GB ($159.99), and 1 TB ($199.99). The company also added that it reduced the physical size of the Canvio line by 25-percent while delivering a 35-percent reduction in total volume by using 100-percent recyclable materials.

Blackberry pearl 9105 may have traditional t9 keyboard

March 31st, 2010

The often rumored BlackBerry 9100 is said to be geting an extra model that will be equipped with a traditional T9-style keypad rather than the hardware QWERTY keyboards the devices are known for best. To be called the 9105, there is even a mockup of the handset from the origin of the news, bbnews.pl. The 9105 is apparently due to appear on the European market, and the source maintains both the 9100 and 9105 will share the same version of the OS.
Otherwise, the 3G-capable handset is said to get 256MB of internal memory, a microSD card slot, Wi-Fi, GPS, an optical trackpad and a screen with a unusual resolution of 366×400. A 3.2-megapixel camera will be integrated, as will stereo Bluetooth and a 3.5mm audio jack.

IPhone hd likely to air hardware multitasking detailed in reports

March 31st, 2010

The fourth generation, iPhone, dubbed the iPhone HD will likely land on Tuesday June 22, based on the company’s reservations at the conference center where it has announced iPhones for the past three years. The updated phone is expected to bring multitasking at last to Apple’s customers. A CDMA version of the iPhone also is reportedly in the works and may be announced as well, though it is not expected to launch in the U.S. until early next year.

Apple’s iPhone, available (officially) exclusively on the AT&T network in the U.S., is top end hardware in terms of features and packaging. It falls just slightly short of the newest handsets of a couple of its competitors, such as HTC’s Nexus One Android handset, in terms of pure processing power. In terms of its application catalog, though, none of its competitors can come close to touching it.

There are 150,000+ iPhone-ready third-party apps available in Apple’s App Store, while Android only has 30,000. However, Android and webOS have a key advantage over Apple: the ability to multitask (Windows Phone 7 Series, another key competitor will likely not support multitasking at first when it airs late this year).

Multitasking has long been prohibited on the iPhone to save battery life, despite the fact that the operating system supports it. As of the third generation iPhone OS, multitasking has only been allowed in a few select apps, most of which perform critical phone functions.

According to AppleInsider, a leaks site who first broke the news of multitasking in the fourth gen iPhone OS, sources close to Apple say multitasking on the new OS is fully enabled in pre-release builds. They say the OS will utilize an interface similar to Exposé on the Mac (similar to Windows+Tab in Windows 7) to switch between apps. Instead of resized windows, though, you’ll get a series of scrollable icons for running apps, reportedly when you double click the home button. That makes it sound closer to the Command+tab key combo found on Macs. However, the Apple sources promised other aspects of the interface are very Exposé-like.

The sources also revealed two other improvements that may or may not make the final cut for the OS 4.0 release. The first is the ability to drop shortcut buttons on the home screen to call frequent contacts. For example you could add a “call mom” or “call girlfriend” button to your home screen.

Another update in a pre-release build is a global mailbox view, which would combine multiple email accounts into a common mailbox.

According to Jon Gruber, a nice hardware update is planned as well. To counter the higher resolutions on Android and Windows Phone 7 Series handsets, the resolution reportedly will get the bump to 960×640. Apple recently aired its new iFrame 960×540 video format, exactly 100 pixels less in width, lending credence to this rumor (the extra pixels would likely be reserved for important functions).

The CPU is expected to be in the A4 family of systems on a chip (SOCs). Apple’s current iPhone 3GS uses an 1 GHz A4 chip underclocked to 600 MHz, while the new iPad uses a fully clocked A4. The iPhone HD will likely employ a higher clocked A4, possibly running at 0.8 GHz or full speed.

The new operating system is expected to be announced at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Apple reportedly reserved the Moscone Center in San Francisco, its typical conference location, from June 23 until June 24 for a “corporate event”. The event date was previously listed as June 28 to July 2, but it has subsequently been bumped to earlier in June. While the center is not listed as reserved for June 22, that’s a Tuesday, and every past iPhone launch has been on a Tuesday, so we expect that to be the true launch date.

Solaris is dead long live linux.

March 31st, 2010

We are all waiting to see just exactly what Oracle will do with the late Sun’s assets. Now we are starting to see some of the picture loud and clear.

Linux has certainly revolutionized the computer industry. What was once the domain of expensive, proprietary Unix systems now belongs to our favorite operating system. With big players like IBM making the decision to support Linux, it has effectively killed off its proprietary competition. Google’s entire network runs on Linux, as does the majority of the Internet.

In the year 2000, Linux accounted for little over 5% of the world’s super computers. Who had majority market share? Proprietary Unix at 90%
